Is it possible or has it been implemented in a nightly build or will it ever we implemented for Canon 600D to be able to record movie's without coming up with the dreaded 'movie recording has stopped automatically' a minute or so through a recording. I feel like throwing my camera against a brick wall every time that happens!

walter_schulz

Your request is very unspecific.
There should be no problem to record H.264 for about 30 minutes with your cam.
But I suppose you wanted to ask about RAW/MLV recording. First make sure to have the proper power saving setting. If you have already done this but having troubles with missing frames you have to reduce bit rate until those errors vanish.

For proper help ask proper questions ...

So your saying that it might be a card problem?

My card is SanDisk Ultra, SDHC I, 30MB/s read, Class 10.

Surely this is enough to record movies

I can record movies from about 1-3 minutes

I am going to install magic lantern on my camera today, after I charge my camera, what settings should I set to 'improve' the video recording?

What is RAW/MLV recording anyway?

walter_schulz

If you're on Windows you might want to use a benchmark tool like CrystalDiskMark or ATTO to determine your card's writing performance.

Read user guide and sticky threads to find out about ML capabilities.

Lachiepower0402

I am using Mac and I used black magic disk speed test, with a stress load of 4GB, I did 4 tests with averages of
Read = 43.1MB/s
Write = 9.45MB/s

walter_schulz

Should not be a problem with H.264 recording (but don't even think about MLV/RAW video with this card).
1080p/25 in H.264 usually takes less than 6 MByte/s write speed.
What about power saving settings?

Lachiepower0402

What do you mean power settings, is that something you change in Magic Lantern firmware or official firmware, because like I said I am not yet on Magic Lantern firmware, because my camera is still charging, once it is charged, I am then going to install Magic Lantern.

PaulB

I think he means the auto power off setting in the Canon firmware.

Lachiepower0402

Does that make a difference to the recording time, because my camera is set to turn off after a minute and I have recorded movies for 20 seconds and the error will come up, I have also recorded 2 mins before then the error comes up. So it can't be the auto power off setting

Lachiepower0402

I did the same test for my other Silicon Power 8GB, SDHC, Class 10 card and go averages of

Write = 8MB/s
Read = 16.2MB/s

walter_schulz

8 MByte/s isn't something I would rely on for movie recording. A decent card with 30 to 45 MByte/s write speed is not that expensive.

Betelgeuza

forgot about 6mb/s or even 45mb/s  memory card if u rec videos !

get 95 mb/s and video will go well

walter_schulz

With H.264 and 1080p/24 anything able to write with 10 MByte/s is just fine.
If you want to do MLV/RAW video and you can live with resolutions a bit down from the upper margin you will be fine with 45 MByte/s.
Only if you want to hit the limit you're right. Means: 600D's limit. Compared to anything able to write to CF ... well, quite limited.

Datadogie

Definitely a slow card. Try another. Does the 600d not have the 12 minute 4gb stop.

Fancier 370 tripod and LCD hinged loupe. DIY Slider and crane.

walter_schulz

Mother of all overkills.
Interface on 600D doesn't support UHS-II.
And to make things worse: Canon decided to implement a slow SD-card interface. Take a look at

You're stuck with about 21 MByte/s and therefore very limited recording times at higher RAW/MLV video resolutions.
600D is just not the best choice if you want to go for RAW/MLV video.

Lachiepower0402

So what is this RAW/MLV recording anyway, I know how magic lantern installed on my camera, how do I setup RAW/MLV recording?

walter_schulz

Lachiepower0402

So do I have to install a nightly build

As quoted here

I'm using the stable 2.3 build, and I can't see the raw recording, or any of the other modules?

You need to use a nightly build.

Is this really safe, I don't want to bugger my camera up!

Stedda

If you want RAW/MLV you must use a Nightly... the rest of the decision is all yours.

I have installed the latest nightly build for my camera, every seems to work, what can I do enable RAW/MLV recording.

Also I am interested in the audio monitoring feature, but I can't figure out how to use it.

ansius

you really should spend time reading manual and user guide.

Enable the module... basic ML.

and as suggested for the 3rd time now start reading up. Your questions are covered for newbs on a daily basis...
