Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade my DSLR from a 650D, not really sure what the best next camera is? 7D? I'd like to be able to record RAW in a higher resolution than 1476x626 as the 650D limits at 32mb/s (95mb/s Sandisk). Could anyone shed some light on a worthy upgrade?

Thanks!

I have a 600D right now, so we are in a similar situation in a way. Now it of course comes down to economy, but instead of trying any halfway solutions - a 50D in crop mode would be quite fine actually - I will just save up and buy a 5d3 when the time comes.
Of course a 5d2 is a far more affordable solution (half the price used here in Denmark) I want to be able to record good quality stuff outside of crop mode as well (there are a few ways to piss me off, and moire and aliasing in my footage is one of them...) so I rather save longer, but buy the 5d3 then. Also, a 5d4 is rumoured, GH4's and A4s' flooding the market, so a drop in 5d3 value in the next half year or so is to be expected as well.

Thanks for the reply, I'd be looking at £800-900 for a 5D Mark II, which I guess will come down too with the 5D Mark III which is double the cost.

Would a 7D that can shoot 1728×972 at £530 even be worth it vs a 5D Mark II at 1880×940... Hmmm.. any more input would be greatly appreciated!

Edit- Looking into the 7D more as it has a Compact Flash I can get a 128GB KOMPUTERBAY 1050X as I fill up my 32GB Sandisk SD card very quickly and have to offload to my laptop.

Based on my tests b/w my 50D and 60D (same resolutions as 7D but shorter recording time), the difference in resolution is negligible when looking at it at 300%.

So you tested 1476x626 vs 1728×972? Could you post a screenshot of a comparison please? Shot at 100 ISO ofc.

Anyone got some input on whether I should go ahead and buy 7D (Used/Second Hand)? I've seen the 7D Mk II is due out next month but that looks to be way over my budget and may never get Magic Lantern (??)...

Thanks!

I upgraded from 600D to 7D, go for it. It still has one of the fastest burst rates of Canon dslr's short of the 1D series, and it's cheaper than ever since it was just discontinued. It has over 370 MB raw buffer memory as well, which gives you some great lengths on raw recordings. The CF speed tops out ~81 MB/s, and the 7D's weather-proofing is a major plus when doing videography.

Thanks for your advice :)

At the moment here in the United Kingdom the prices haven't dropped, I'd probably buy a import model anyway as they are significantly cheaper (£900 vs £600). It definitely seems like the best upgrade that's within my budget, I'd go for the 70D if it had Magic Lantern support.

I'm going to wait for the 7D Mark II to launch, see it's price and if it's too much for me then hopefully the 7D will drop price again.

You can do 720p continuous raw on the 650d, you should get a better sd card.

The resolution I record in is better than 720p isn't it? I have a 95mb/s card and am maxing it out at 40mb/s (the camera cannot go faster). or am I mistaken that 1476x626 is worse than 1280x720 (I prefer the letterbox aspect ratio) and surely a 7D at 1728×972 has a much better quality than a 650D at 1476x626 - where I shoot has low light and the 650D seems to struggle sometimes.. here's an example of what I have filmed on my 650D.

Sorry for the two completely different subjects.
