dual iso 2,5k movie thread
« on: July 26, 2014, 01:45:47 AM »
Hi!
Decided to deepen my testing with dual iso movie mode again and created some 2,5k movie files which show what an amazing kind of dynamic range dual iso can achieve. Alex work on refining the conversion tool has been amazing to say the least.
I get the best results when in 3x zoom mode. (less aliasing, cleaner picture). 3x zoom mode is closer to dual iso still photography.

5D mark 3 magic lantern (nightly build)
dual iso movie (mostly 100-1600 iso)
3x zoom 2560x1090 raw
hacked preview
24 fps override

Lenses used:
Samyang 14mm f2.8
Canon ef 85mm f1.8

Movie and workflow description

Movie (Watch in 1440HD)

Real estate

Below app and workflow service will apply same level(avoids flicker after dual iso conversion) and work multithreaded (run 4 conversions simultaneously).

Info on the app here

Workflow (this one still have some issues with exiftool regarding overwriting)

So let,s start making more dual iso movies and put it up in this thread. Workflow tips and other useful information are also welcome.
2,5k 24fps will probably only be achieved with the 5d mark 3 but other aspect ratios are welcome as well of course.

Thanks to Alex and all other contributing on this forum.

Here are some printscreens from the movie. Before and after postprocessing.

Danne, I really appreciate you spending the time and help us/me learn.  Thank you

But i have to tell you this.  the music in the video is painful to my ears.  making it very hard to stay focus on learning from the video.  we for me anyway

Freeware music from youtube. Turn it off if disturbing.

Danne this is great stuff!  I got very excited watching your workflow and how seamless it seemed to be that I went out to tried dual iso in movie mode for myself over the last 2 days.  Unfortunately following your steps one by one, I've been painstakingly getting 0% success trying this the last 2 days.  I've read countless forums, watched video tutorials, and walked through several different processes that have all been unsuccessful for me.  MlvMystic doesn't do anything to to my DNG's after it's processed through dual iso, and I haven't been able to get anything other than the alternating (flickering) image as a final result.  Any light you could shine onto the errors I'm having would be huge!  Thank you in advance!

my unsuccessful workflow thus far -

5dmk3-1.2.3 july 17th build

ML HDR video - ML.raw file
Raw Magic lite - process to DNG
MlvMystic - process DNG's in "dual ISO" mode
Open DNG sequence in AE or Davinci for final grading / exporting

I'm currently yielding nothing but a flickering image

Keep on trying. Next time without HDR selected ;). HDR is a whole different ballpark.
Instead set "dual iso" on and choose something like 100-1600 and see to it you get well exposed highlights. Film in raw or mlv and follow my steps in the workflow as a starting point.
Good luck and post some results later :)

Another small test lifting shadows retaining highlights. Used a canon 20-35mm f2.8. Next up is to get a wideangle which will give around 22-24mm 2560x1090. Would be nice for interiors. Thinking about modifying a sigma 10-20 and move it a little to get a centre spot which will be needed for correct perspective.

Hi!
How many seconds continuous you can take with 5x?

Some frames are corrupted.  Strange things appear, example: 1 min 38

Have you reduce the noise in the shadows?

thanks.

I think about a minute continuous with hacked preview(no preview). I didn,t use any noise reduction.
Thanks

Hi, slog2 is a video format using s-curve to optimize the video for maximum DR. So this is not the logfile. The Sony high end camera's use slog2, canon does not. But using Davinci Resolve we can convert Canon RAW into s-log2 format.

Incredible work Danne!

I have one question though: when you shoot video with dual ISO do you have a strong impact on resolution as with stills?

Thanks for your feedback!

Thanks. I think it works the same as with dual iso stills but in 3x zoom mode.

No, you can shoot in regulat mode as well. The quality will differ and also you cannot do 2,5k.

New findings. Adobe camera raw used through AE seems to create flicker with dual iso movie files without even using the sliders at all. Tested some clips and compared acr with mlrawviewer which created no flicker at all. Here is a comparison.
*Davinci resolve 10 lite also has the flicker so it seems it comes from the conversion to dng from dual iso dng:s. Somehow it works with Mlrawviewer??
