Compiled list of card speeds

With help from members, I have compiled a list of card speeds with Magic Lantern.  Feel free to add more results, details at the bottom of this post.

Posted results in this thread that haven't followed the requested testing procedure have not been included in my dropbox link, testing in playback mode etc.  Please follow the instructions below if you would like your results included.


Some notes!

The fastest CF card results I have, show the KomputerBay 64GB 1000x @ 93MB/s.


However, all KomputerBay cards tested above 85MB/s on the 5D3, and the Lexar 64GB card I have results for, also benchmarked above 85MB/s.

Based on the results of one card, the 5D2 appears to be around 15MB/s slower then the 5D3.

Higher frame rate modes in Canon settings, results in slower speeds.  That is to say, 24p modes are fastest, and 60p modes are slowest.

Crop mode in Magic Lantern raw recording, switches to 30p mode.

Cameras have hardware limits to card speeds, it doesn't matter how fast the actual card is.  These speeds (and other useful information) can be found here:  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgQ2MOkAZTFHdFFIcFp1d0R5TzVPTVJXOEVyUndteGc#gid=5



To perform the benchmark, select the benchmark option in the debug menu, then choose the Card R/W benchmark option.



When the benchmark is complete, a PPM file (BENCH0.PPM) will be on the card that has ML installed, and you can use the free image viewer Irfanview to save the PPM as PNG.
Upload the files to a free image host and post the links here, preferably using the img tags.

Please include the camera used and card type +capacity, and test in movie mode with Global Draw OFF.

Does Canon menu FRAME RATE setting matter?

You know, I wouldn't have expected that. Thinking back though, it was suggested for the 650D that you set it to 1080p@24fps in canon menu (maybe other cameras too), but for the 5D2 and 5D3 I was using 1080p@30fps thinking the higher frame would/might put the camera into a faster 'mode'.

Yeah, we have lots of useful threads, but it would be good if they were like general discussion about the cards, and the important bits, "how fast is this card", is compiled into one list.

I recall some people saying crop mode is slower, and this makes sense now, as crop mode switches to 30p.

Camera was cold and had warm up enabled at start up. Also, I formatted the card before the benchmark. I'll do more later when the camera is in its typical 'warm' state.

Confirmed: Using 24fps set in Canon Menu gives about 2MB/s better result with my sdhc card.
Following is the best I could get with my Panasonic Gold Card (Panasonic rates card on the sticker as Read: 90MB/S and Write 45MB/s.)

Ok just wanted to add this info for 650D / 700D / probably 70D and 6D. Found some benches done in photo mode for taking RAWs in burst. Looks like the sandisk extreme Plus 80MB/s is best performer for these cams having crippled sd controller. Ofc results need to be compared in camera with ML. Maybe I will buy one and test some days later.

Card was very warmed up, semi-fresh format, and mostly empty. I can usually average 75-80 MB/s with MLV and close to a consistent 80 MB/s with RAW in crop mode, 24, GD and sound off.

I have these results for my 2 newest cards, right from the pack:

This one is the first card I've got in July last year, if you only do 'quick format', it is not able to do Full HD with my MKIII without dropping frames. With 'full format' in my PC, it sometimes skips (depends on the build) on a few takes, and after that can reach 1920x1152 without any problems:

This one is worth for takes of around 5 seconds, as it skips after that. It is too slow for continuous Full HD:

I've never used the KB 128GB 1066x, but I hear they work very well. STAY AWAY FROM KB 128GB 1000x, even KB realizes how bad they are and are selling at a discount because of it.
