clear overlay issue

I successfully removed all display overlays from my canon T3i, for a clean hdmi out display, However...
After about 20 mins all the display meters/indicators come back on by themselves.
Then if I hit the trash button again 2x, the display goes clear again.

I have the clear overlays set to "Always".
Can anybody give me a clue to why it would just switch back on me, after about 20 mins?
