Is it possible to use Canon's orange LED light from T2i to help focusing on close objects in the dark without internal flash assistance as Nikon/Pentax users are able to do with their dslrs?

I'm asking this because of Magic Lantern's flashlight implementation which uses the orange LED light.

a1ex

Yes, some users mentioned they can do this without ML on google groups. Not sure how.

Excellent. It would be great if Magic Lantern would give us this possibility too, if you can implement it or have the necessary time.

Its the IR af assist... I've had it come on by itself before not sure if it was on 400D or 600D.

Isn't it just used when self-timer is active?
I'm using ML2.3 for photography with:
EOS 600DML | EOS 400Dplus | EOS 5D MLbeta5- EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro  - EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM - EF 70-200mm f/4 L USM - 580EXII - OsX, PS, LR, RawTherapee, LightZone -no video experience-

Timer rings a bell... it was at night.

It's also used with red eye reduction.

The IR AF assist light *should* come on by itself. I think it does when the camera can't focus properly and the hotshoe is in use (i.e. the internal flash can't pop-up). It probably gives higher priority to the internal flash, which makes sense 90% of the time
EOS 1100D | EOS 650 (No, I didn't forget the D) | Ye Olde Canon EF Lenses ('87): 50 f/1.8 - 28 f/2.8 - 70-210 f/4 | EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 | Metz 36 AF-5

Ok so this make me understand more C.Fn. option about it...

@a1ex, yeah red eye reduction also (who use it?).
I don't like pre flash for red eye reduction 'cause people think that the pic is done after first flash so they will relax when taking the pic.
I never tried to use only orange light for that.

Will you implement this feature?

nanomad

Just place something in the hotshoe and the camera will do that by itself, no need for ML to re-invent the wheel

Make sure that C.Fn III-06: Activation of the Autofocus Assist Lamp is set to 0 (Emits)
