External data capture from scanner

Has anyone done any work or created a macro to allow data from a scanner to be added to the EXIF information of an image?  Equivalent to Geo Tagging but taking data from a scanner rather than GPS device.

No, but that one should be easy with barcode scanner
Or do you want to use OCR?

I'm looking for something similar to this as well... a simple barcode scanner would make dealing with a lot of photos much more manageable. Sorta like they use at Disney and other places.  I have a 6d and it's a great little workhorse.
