Audio monitoring Canon eos 500d/t1i

Hello everyone!
I have got all the right cables and I can listen to sound in playback mode, but it is impossible to hear anything at real time recording or standby mode with AV cable (and wiring, actually, I soldered 3.5mm female output jack) on canon 500D. So I am wondering - is 500d's ML made for monitoring audio?
