Hello,

I am buying memory for MLV on my 5DMKIII and am confused about the SD card requirements/limitations for MLV Spanning on the 5DMKIII.  Thanks for your help on my questions:

1) What is the best size for SD cards? I read that 16GB should be the max size for the 5DMKIII?

2) What is the best type of SD card? - SDHC, SDXC etc...

3) 21MBps is the speed limit on the 5DMKIII correct?  So a card just needs to be able to write at least thses speeds?

I will be buyign the 128GB Sandisk CF card with 160MBps write speed.

Thanks for your help!

Hello, Thanks for your link but I can not find any information about SD cards and the 5DMKIII in the thread.  The 6D is the only topic regarding SD cards.  Everything else is for CF cards.

Bingo!

Please read up some more on ML before you buy stuff, but in general faster is better. You're going to be writing most of your data to CF cards anyway and you might not even need file spanning at all if everything can work off of a CF card alone.

Hello,

Thanks, but that is my question.  I don't want to over buy the SD card only to find out the format is not supported.

I am trying read as much as I can but there is not much written about SD cards and the MKIII.  Is 16GB the size limit?  I have seen people mentioning larger cards in testing.  How much gets written to the SD card for say 1080p30?  16GB might run out before the 128GB CF card.  That is why I am posting questions.

Everything you're looking for has already been posted... RAW maybe new to you but these questions are asked weekly if not more... you can also base a lot of SD info from the 6D however CF is all most really care about.

Don't want to ruffle any feathers so I will move on but I searched for SD cards and SDXC and nothing came up to help me be confident with a purchase decision.  If it has already been posted, I am having trouble finding it.

SD card recording on the 6D has data rates well beyond the 21MB/s stated for the 5DMKIII.  I don't see how they are related?

Stedda

How is it related...

Seems your looking for the best SD card. The 6D has the best (of Canon cameras) SD card controller so base you purchase on that if its what your looking for.

5D III has a different controller that will be capped at around 21 MBps as you've found in your search no one puts any thought into their SD card because that not where the speed is at.. it's all about your CF card. Anything you get from the SD IMO is a small bonus.

So you can go two ways buy only what is necessary or I buy my SD cards for future compatibility and use, I have a Fuji XT-1 so I buy for that since it has latest generation SD card controller.

Hello again,

Yes, I am looking for the best SD card for the 5DMKIII.  Future proofing is fine, but I don't want to step in a hole.  I read some reports of a 64GB SD card is too large for a ML install.  Then I read that will be or has been fixed.

I found a Sandisk 32GB SDHC with 80MB/s read & write at B&H for $37  At 21MB/s, a 32GB SD card will equal the 128GB CF card in record time on the 5DMKIII.

Is it better to get SDXC instead of SDHC?  Or does that not matter with a 32GB card?

Hello,
SD cards and the MKIII.  Is 16GB the size limit?
I use 64 GB SD for photo backup

Bassman2003

Hello AleXis,

Sorry, I should have been more clear.  I was speaking towards having a bootable ML install on the SD card for the MKIII, not just general use.

I think thats called "card spanning"?

I have the same problem!

I haven't installed ML yet. I have the 5D3, KB 64 1066x on it's way and now ordering another, but I can't find (and I've searched) anything about the needed SD card.

Have I got it right:
1) I need the SD card to hold the ML, while I record and switch between CF cards.
2) Someone said that the speed of the SD card effects the performance on the CF cards.
3) What if I go only CF route, when switching between them, I need to have the ML file on all of them? How about formating?
