[WONTFIX] wireless flash trigger using IR

Hey guys,
thought of a new idea today and wanted your opinion. It would be nice to be able to trigger a canon flash without a cable. Would it be possible to make use of the IR port that is built in to trigger the camera with a remote, to make it into a wireless flash transmitter?

Sorry, but I believe I'm missing something: You suggest turning an IR receiver into an IR sender?
Please explain with more detail.

I at one stage wanted to build a wireless flash transmitter using the top flash port.
It was pointed out to me that there are already really cheap ones available on the market.

Thank you, those are pretty cheap, especially compared to canons
