Raw Video / Re: 60D RAW video - it's working !!!

@KahL - Picture Style choice does not affect raw video recording in any way :)

You're right for the most part, especially w/ this early code's magenta shift issues. However whenever I'm shooting stills in RAW, the picture style still shows through. It's not as heavy as it would be had it been in jpeg, but the characteristics remain somewhat I've seen.

Raw Video / Re: 60D RAW video - it's working !!!

My unscientific test using RAW on the 60D, off of the Vision Log and Vision Color profiles (not as detrimental in RAW as is w/ h264).
https://vimeo.com/67139223

This was a shot test using the Magic Lantern early 60D code for RAW frame shooting. My main points of interest were in skin tones, resolution and latitude.
WORK NOTES
1.   The RAW workflow, for those who are unfamiliar w/ RAW still photography, is a very painstaking process. It is well worth it, but it isn't as quick and immediate as in recording video. Keep in mind, filming in RAW is NOT video, they are still frames in a sequence (just to clarify that there isn't such a thing as RAW VIDEO in the most literal sense).
2.   These were filmed at 960x408, a 2.35:1 frame crop, which lead to much longer scene filming through the 20MBps data cap limit of the 60D's SD card buffer.
3.   The frame processing was done in Lightroom 4, which consisted of white balance correction (early code has a magenta shift), recovering highlights allowing from 1-2 stops of recovery and pulling up the blacks to flatten back to the Log look setup (shot on Vision Log).
4.   Finally, the frames were batch exported w/ a 1920px horizontal upscale in JPEG 100% quality, then imported as a frame sequence in premiere for editing.
5.   Color grading was done via a DPX export into AE CS6 and final delivery in h.264 at 28Mbps (Blu Ray quality).
This process reminds me SO much of processing film digitally. Additionally, the 960x408 upscale gives a very similar resolution to Super 16mm film. So as a fan of films such as The Hurt Locker, Hustle And Flow, The Wrestler and Black Swan, I've zero problem with the high latitude, but smooth-softened look of super 16 in a digital form :)
The resolution is MUCH better than the h264 files and the latitude isn't even comparable. Shooting in RAW gives such a large latitude advantage, it becomes a totally different conversation altogether. Much like shooting on film, you realize you can play much more w/ the imagery and don't need to be as protective of the highlights as you do when shooting video. It's a very different mindset and a much needed upgrade.
A GIGANTIC THANK YOU to the Magic Lantern team for putting all of their efforts into this!

Just a quick test, some awesome dynamic range.

PS actually reads the 240 ppi of the RAW images but I think After Effects defaults to the 72 ppi of video. It should explain why the images don't upres equally:
After effects is resizing 1920x1080 72 ppi -> 4K (or whatever) 72 ppi
Photoshop should be using 1920x1080 240ppi -> 4K 72 ppi (supposing you are using video resolution)

Pretty much. And a better roundabout way of processing the images would be through Lightroom 4. Then export to TIFF frame sequence, then transcode to DNxHD/Prores, OR export as JPEG frame sequence and edit that natively.

This entire workflow of processing brings things to the days of film on a certain level. Most definitely not a workflow for many people asking for this feature and would be reserved for larger, more well developed production budgets.

In what way did you process this?

Well the POST work is my own private cocktail, and that's not the complete setup either.
But the DNG file was imported into photoshop, changed horizontal resolution to 1920 and then added some sharpening. They probably won't resolve very well beyond 1920, but like super 16, this is a great choice.

This is an overprocessed image, but I wanted to test it from Andrew Reid's 600D raw samples.
It's a 960x480, 240dpi resolution image. And when upscaled to 1920 horizontal resolution, it almost totally emulates the clarity of super 16 film!

Any chance you guys have a few 720x480 DNG frames on hand (from the 600D)? I'd like to do some resolution and color tests here while I wait :)

That won't work for 550D, its 600D only. I'm  not getting pink frames anymore most of the time.. sometimes jacked up frames. I haven't tried 1738 or 1740 again which were known bad.

Hehe, I got my own question....

whats up with printing uint64 or long long int with printf? I can cut off the 4gb limit but the indicators are all fucked up.

Thanks 1%. I guess I'll just sit tight and follow the progress :)

The forum user 1% has put together a compiled build for the 600d here (be warned that the SD card limits you to smaller than HD resolution):
https://bitbucket.org/OtherOnePercent/tragic-lantern-2.0/downloads

I had luck installing and using it, but no matter what frame sizes I specified, I got those pink weird cropped frames every 5-10 frames (Using a transcend class 10 card, which others said they were able to use on small resolutions without issue).  I'm extremely excited about the RAW possibility, the files just have so much lattitude!  Any tips on how to get pink frame-free video on a 600d from someone who has tried it?

Thanks, just PM'ed you too.
No luck so far for me, but to be fair, I AM trying this on the 550D. Maybe it isn't prepared for that one yet, though usually 600D builds are compatible. So color me confused all the way.

What's going on w/ the 600D? Is it available to test and where?

Go to the last tab on the right (modules) and select Load Modules Now to load new features :) You will have a new tab for raw_rec on the far right and Lv_rec will live  at the bottom of all the stuff in the movie tab

Enjoy ;)

I'm seeing posts for this for the 600D. Assuming it's the same build, would this be possible on the 550D as well? And if so, how do we access it?

Ah! I found it, thank you very much!  :)

I was to excited to check the other menus so I didn't even recognized the new "RAW video" option ... Sorry for beeing so blind. But really, thanks a lot!

It seems to work pretty good on my EOS 600D. I was able to record with 720 X 720 at 24 fps. Occasionally a single frame was skipped but I would still call it continously. Awesome! Hopefully something like 1280 X 550 (21:9 aspect ratio) will work one day too.

Could somebody with a fast SD card could give it a try? According to the benchmark my card has a max. write speed of 21 MB/s ... 1280 X 550 would require > 27 MB/s.
Have you already tried this one: raw2dng.exe | From Tragic Lantern 2.0?

Being used on the 600D, does this mean I can test it out on the 550D/T2i as well? If so, how can I go about fetching them files? :)

Crap, I am SO lost, guys. How do I setup and install this version?
#64
I know I'm a complete newb to this topic, but I've been reading off and on for the past few weeks.
How can I get a copy of this latest ML build to test out on my end? I'm really excited about the potential quality jump this has, especially for post work.
