Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon EOS R5 / R6
March 11, 2023, 03:09:20 AM
I understand giving up. Since the overheating isn't an issue anymore, I'm not sure how ML would benefit the R5 or R6 much anyway unless it can somehow let us do Open Gate recording.

I'm hungry now

The upscaling really did a good job on the sharpness. Did you use topaz?

Hey people of ML  :)

I've been thinking about upgrading to the 5Dmkiii, it has more res and record time, as far as I can tell but I haven't found any info or videos about the quality of the live view preview while recording in any res that's higher than 1080p.

Higher record time? In 10bit the 5d2 has unlimited record time. You should try looking at ZEEK's videos on YouTube about the 5d2

I was then able to reinstall firmware and magic bullet.

lol "magic bullet"

If you use Plural Eyes by red giant then you wouldn't have to worry about that. I would be concerned a little because the recording time on some Canon cameras can vary in when to start when record is triggered.

Sorry about all this but I've come to realize that the new cameras like R5 and others have all the features I need or what out of a camera without ML . Not say development of the new camera are not needed, but for my it good enough. 😊

I think that this same thing happened to me with my R6. It's easier to use than MLRAW so I gave up on learning how to crack it.  Overheating is easy to hack, I just wish there wasn't a 30min record limit though.

Raw Video / Re: Best camera to choose (even for RAW)

A 5D2 is half the price on ebay as the 5D3. You can shoot using the full sensor in 10bit with pixel binning. Crop mode is incredibly sharp.

Go with the 5D2 if money is the main concern. You won't go wrong. I have three 5D2's and I've been using them for a whole decade now.

Topaz video enhance ai was a savior for 1x3 videos for me
#37
For ML videos? Or just for videos in general.

For ML use MLVAPP

For any other video use Adobe Media Encoder. VLC works too and it's free

Woah this was beautiful!!!! You did really well with the colors of the architecure!

One last thing , the new intel mother board has 2 M.2 PICe4x SSD slots
just wondering what other people are using , eg. brand & size

Any M.2 NVME that had the SABRENT brand on it is amazing. I own so many of those drives now and they have reliably performed for me. The 4TB Q version is my go to, but the 2TB is perfect as well.

I became frustrated with the lack of GPU accel on after effects even though I much prefer ACR's rendering of raw files vs Resolve. Even with a 3900x (12 cores & 24 threads), the export was 1-2 fps with 50% core utilization in AE. In resolve though, I could export ridiculously fast at 24-30fps with GPU accel on my 3070 and made things so much easier like scrubbing and color correction. Curious to see what you think about that

I love ACR too but I hated ACR as the bottleneck. It would take wayy too long to render. Resolve is faster, but I'm using the R6 now with 10bit log so I don't really have those problems anymore. 5D2's Raw is still sooooo good though and it's hard NOT to shoot with it sometimes on more artsy shoots. Would love to see more GPU accel on AE.

What is the advantage of this method?
With eos utility a Downgrade works also...

Does it really? It historically didn't work. I guess I never considered doing that.
#41
Out of the 8 battery door open attempts that I tried, I was unsuccessful on 3 of them. It's almost simultaneous timing with the button push on the update screen.
#42
This method does NOT work on the EOS R6. There is so far a workaround though: https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=25481.msg232557#msg232557

Nevermind it does work. It has to be almost at the same time on the R6 though. Like painfully quick. But the workaround also works as well

The battery door trick that has been used to downgrade the 5D3 and other models so far that we've known does not work on the EOS R6. If you try and open the battery door or the card door, the camera and LCD will stay on: Nevermind it does work. But you have to be EXTREMELY fast to catch it. This method below works though:

Instead, you'll need two SD cards. It won't work if you have only one. Follow these steps:

- copy NEW/CURRENT firmware to the card - insert into camera.
- launch Update Firmware from Canon menu, click OK
- open the CARD door ASAP, but don't remove the card or it won't work and will give an error message
- QUICKLY insert a SECOND card with the older firmware on it into the other card slot
-
- If done correctly, the above menu should pop up. Select the older firmware and install

I'm not sure if this method works on the R5 or any other camera. I would caution against updating to newer firmware in the future and for other models. Especially if the camera only has one card slot like the EOS RP or R or m50.

The last one seems to be this from 2018? Is this the basic install and do I have to drop the development modules on top of that? Thanks! Martin

Just watch ZEEK's video. He explains everything and he has download links in the description https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQHPUMQQJx8&ab_channel=Zeek

TODO: I should replace the links with https://foss.heptapod.net/magic-lantern/magic-lantern throughout the forum and website. Forum links can be automated, I'll look into it, so... no need to edit the posts manually (I hope).

There are some syntax differences, for example:
- before: https://bitbucket.org/hudson/magic-lantern/src/qemu/contrib/qemu/README.rst
- after: https://foss.heptapod.net/magic-lantern/magic-lantern/-/blob/branch/qemu/contrib/qemu/README.rst

Hey A1ex, any update on this? There have been multiple users that I've seen trying to get started with ML but because the links are dead, there is no all in one place to learn anymore.

Hi,

BitBucket is not working anymore...
Is there anywhere else I can get the script to patch QEMU?

Thanks!

You have to do some manual link editing. The QEMU migration solution is here and the first post of that thread is the original tutorial:

I'm working on an R6 10bit vs 5D2 10bit video. Probably not the same but close enough right?
#49
Probably if we knew all of the right stubs and what to enable/disable. Canon basic seems powerful. I'm still learning but don't count on it because I'm noob.
#50
I would just take it to canon at this point.
