Raw Video / Re: 5D III CF Card Requirements
May 02, 2020, 12:37:19 AM
You shouldn't need to write 14bit to any card anyway. 12bit has almost entirely the exact same dynamic range as 14bit. 10bit is the most useful in all cases though (especially when you have a somewhat properly exposed image).

Just shoot in 10bit and you'll still fall in love.

Wait what it's working with older cameras? Lemme try with my 5D2 and t3i real quick hold on

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL I have to buy this thing asap!

Hello
I apologize if the place is wrong for the question
Is there a video comparison between atomos ninja and magiclantern?

No I don't think so. We all would love to see that test if you are ever interested in doing something like that!

Yeah. Us guys over here have to stick to random stream/screen recording solutions or Sparkocam... These cameras are too new for me lol

Stunning! Your village looks like an amazing place to live! Great time lapse. Did you have to worry about your camera possibly overheating being out there in the sun like that?
#182
Amazing. I love the feeling that I got from this video. Great grading and music choice!

Some of these shots feel like I'm travelling through a galaxy in another universe and am about to land on a planet.

AMAZING!

Ahhhhh I've been waiting for this test!!

This is exactly what I needed to see. The VAF filter in the 5D2 is amazing for full frame! Those branches just melt away. I also now understand why Reddeercity and I disagreed so much on the use of the filter. That filter is unusable for his crop recording, and I never use crop mode.

It really gets rid of the aliasing... Man I'm jealous. I wonder what the difference between the VAF1 and VAFb is now.

Amazing test! This is proof that I needed to get a 5D3 for the filter and extra vertical resolution, but ever since the EOS R5 was announced, I'm just going to save the money and buy that no matter how much it costs.

Crispy! I love the ending shots

Yep, this camera has every spec we could ask for right now (except raw, but meh...).
Awesome 8K with Canon Colour Science should be glorious!

except RAW? What were you reading? There is literally an entire tab that says 8K internal RAW Recording

10 bit 8k internal NON CROPPED WITH A FLIPPY SCREEN??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!? No way.... no freaking way. it doesn't even have 8bit anything....

Sorry guys. This camera is going to pretty much kill ML... unless it's $6,500 body only w/ no batteries, no front cap, no battery cover, no camera strap, no24p, no 25p, and no product box.

Wow... I mean the 120p 4k was good enough to get me. I actually can't believe this. This camera is everything anyone could ever ask for. And look at how small it is!

Yeah. A data rate that fast is impressive but there's no way we have the capabilities of processing all of that data. I feel like we will need a super huge GPU that's millions of times faster and more powerful than the what we currently use in order to process so much data quickly in or to predict well enough to be considered 100% safe on vehicles.

There was a recent way to do this on the forums.

I want to be able to work with the CinemaDNG files in Photoshop before converting them to ProRes 444....

Photoshopping hundereds of cDNG files is going to be rough. Like Danne said, use after effects (it's the same as photoshop because of Adobe Camera Raw). This is the fastest workflow if you want to stick with Adobe https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=13354.msg128954#msg128954 . It uses "Smart Import 2" and lets you adjust multiple DNG's at once that are in the folder.

But MLVapp can do all of that too and is much faster. Davinci Resolve is the fastest for editing cDNG files by an exponential amount though and it's free.

Great colors! It's impressive. You really know how to grade in MLVApp.

Academic Corner / Re: Extreme macro with ML

Wow this is amazing! This feels almost microscope level of small. And they are all so sharp! Who knew that sanding paper looked like that.

I'm curious  more about how this was done. Which camera/lens/fstops/etc did you use? Did you have to blast your subjects with a crazy amount of lighting? I see the tutorial about the fast stacker so I'll give it a read and it'll probably answer a lot of these questions.
#194
Wow... I honestly can't tell the difference... Even after I downloaded the files and played with them myself. It's clear that it's important to expose the highlights properly though. Those clouds look like something out of a cartoon at -1.66 and -1.33EV

I'm flabbergasted. Reddeercity was right... I feel like I have to do a test now because I would way rather shoot in 10bit instead of 12bit on most all shoots. Even if there is a difference in shadows a little, that is negligible to me because I do a lot of work in post anyway to fix things that I don't like.

Anyways, whenever you do the VAF test, please do a Fullframe and a crop mode test!

I'm very curious to try this combo on a Sigma FP (gotta go rent one). Most cameras will maintain data in the seemingly blown out highlights when it comes to raw. Sigma FP took an opposite approach where it's advised to underexpose to ensure the highlights aren't blown out while being able to recover the shadows. (Some testing for another time and place.)

I wanted the sigma FP too. I would actually love that I can keep my existing workflow and get better 12bit RAW video. But currently, besides having 4K RAW, it is not as good as the 5D3. There is no way to playback footage, you don't even get a headphone jack, and if you REALLY need to shoot 4k, you can shoot 4k crop if you need to. I know that FD lenses don't really work on the 5D3, but its still cheaper to buy a used 5D and a used macro lens (like the tamron 28-75mm f2.8 macro - $136 on ebay). I love how game changing the sigma fp had potential to be, but they made it too featureless for the price. You can also buy a panasonic S1 and shoot 10bit for the same price with a LOT more features.

That was a lot of bokeh! I mean I know it's a macro lens and the baby is small, but that was impressive for an f/3.5 lens at 35mm.

Nice shots!

...VAF 5D2 AA Filter a total waste of time & money it messes with image too much...

the technicolor cinestyle is a 10bit Log curve . you can read able it in the link below
https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=16299.msg158364#msg158364

Didn't know about the technicolor cinestyle!! Thanks so much for that.

I def disagree on the AA Filter though. I have to warn people not to wear striped shirts and textured material on the 5D2 just because the aliasing is so bad for me. I was going to buy one, but that filter costs like $400 when I can just get a 5D3 on ebay for close to $700.

You are awesome!  Thank you for the test! I love looking at tests like these.

I will be using the 12-bit for 95% of shooting scenarios, especially ones where I need longer takes than 24-26 seconds. I'll use 14-Bit if I am in a low-light situation where I know I will need to pull up exposure and shadows. Finally, I'll never touch 10-bit as the color shifting is too severe for my taste.

I've found the same thing that the quality features of 14bit are almost nothing compared to the solid benefits of just 12bit . Honestly in tests that I've done there usually is no difference between the 14bit and 12bit in dynamic range so I go with 12bit 95% of the time. However, when I have a LONG simple shoot I tend to go with 10bit. It's better than going with H.264 and I can get more vertical resolution for social media.

Overall, the highlight retention of all the bit depths seem to be roughly equal, as I cannot see a difference between them.

I think that because its cloudy that you got a little more uniform range. You should try to do the same test on a super bright day! My hypothesis is that the sky is only going to be slightly washed out and the shadows will turn green on the 10bit footage in those cases, but recoverable on the 12bit and 14bit.

Thank you so much for this! I can confidently buy a mk3 on ebay now! I was worried about not being able to use ML.

But now, I have questions for developers (because i am noob).

  • Can this possibly be used on all Canon cameras? I want to try it on my 5D2, but I'm not sure if there is a point in that other than to say that it works on another camera.
  • Could this also be used to flash custom firmware as an entry point? I know it's way more complicated than that and I know that canon has completely changed the way signature and encryption is done for the new DIGIC cameras. Just wondering if this is game changing, or if this has been thought about already.

edit: this does work on my 5D2. Just tested it from 2.1.2 to 1.0.3 then back to 2.1.2-ML
