Raw Video / What are you using to play mlv?
August 14, 2022, 09:48:26 PM
Hi everyone.

Ive been "collecting" aq lot of mlv files, got them all sorted in folders by year/month so far ive been using mlvapp but all i wanted was a quick double click player to find out what is recorded on a specific mlv and zapp through folders.

Tried MlRawViewer but a sxstrace error pops error, ffplay doesnt play them...just audio.

What are you using to quickly view mlv files? Im on Windows 10/11 64bit.

Thanks

Share Your Videos / After the rain - Canon EOS-M

Hi everyone!

Just a quick test with the Canon EOS-M, 2.5k, 16:9 (2192x1234), 15-45mm ef-m lens, edited in Premiere and exported to 2560x1440

Hi everyone!
Got carried away yesterday testing the 15-45 efm lens and got lost in the settings i was using so i ended up with different aspect ratios/resolutions, altough people downplay the 15-45 IS EFM lens i think its better than 22mm efm prime, here's the video with annotations on the resolutions/focal distance, everything was converted to 2560x1440.

Hi everyone! just trying out my "new" canon 15-45mm ef-m lens, stabilization on the lens helped a lot when using the 2.5k mode (2520x1080), Preset: Tonemaped, Tonemaping: None, Processing gamut: Rec709, sharpness 80 and small changes (highlights..shadows etc), exported to prores 422hq, edited in premiere (no color grading), exported to 4k (3840x1634), video quality could be tweaked further (noise reduction, color) but here it is... video recorded in northern (countryside) Portugal.

Hi everyone!

I need some advice on some wide lens for my eos-m, i wanted to try the 2.5k mode but a wide lens is needed since it crops the image, i have 2 lens in mind, the CANON EF-M 15-45mm with IS and the 7artisans 12mm EF-M, Zeek has said good things about the 7artisans lens in his videos but i managed to find teh CANON EF-M 15-45mm with image stabilization in 2nd hand for half the price, from what i see online the 7artisans has a sharper image but no stabilization, the 15-45mm has IS although not as smooth as OIS. Whenever i try to use 2.5k mode (even in 1080prewire) i see a lot of micro jitters that warp stabilizer most of times cant handle, it kind of stabilizes it but looks like the video has been split into layers and those some layers kind of move while other parts dont...its hard to explay but those micro jitters are a pain and prevent me to use the EOS-M more often as i get frustrated.

On one hand the 7 artisans looks good but no IS and the 15-45 has IS but the sharpness/image quality is not as good at the 7artisans.

Can anyone give me some advice? Does anyone have the 15-45 efm lens and can comment on its quality?
Thanks.

Share Your Videos / Canon EOS M - 4k timelapse
April 27, 2020, 11:58:13 AM
watch in 4k when available, i know Zeek has published a video guide on how to do it but this is a differente way of doing it, i posted a "guide" here on the forum on how to do this with free/paid software on Windows and Linux, you can read it here ---> https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=24960.0

By the way...this is my village in northern Portugal

Hi everyone

Here's a "guide" on how to create a 4k timelapse from raw images, i know Zeek posted a guide on how to achieve this by using raw video but this is a different way on how to do it, i used raw (cr2) files that in my opinion give better results, this is possible by using paid software or free software, you can use only one or several programs (paid/free) english is not my native language so apologies in advance, also this "guide" assumes you know a bit about video/image editing.

in this particular situation im using 1200 images and stabilization/denoising was used in After Effects, Davinci Resolve and Premiere Pro

1st method - After effects (paid software)

you can use after effects to do everything but you'll need a fast PC, i loaded all 1200 images and camera raw popped upp and used it to colour correct the image and apply all changes to every image, after that created a new sequence (3840x2140) and dragged the images there, then i resized/cropped everything to fit the 4k dimensions, after that i exported the video but on my PC it took ages (at one time it was showing it was going to take 7 hours), i cancelled after 30 minutes and checked the uncomplete video and the quality was great, it works but its slow.

2nd method - DaVinci Resolve (free)

Like After effects everything can be done with Davinci Resolve, in some ways its simpler, when importing it detects that all images are part of a seguence and you only "one" file, imported it into a 4k timeline and color corrected/resized/cropped it and then exported it, but much like After Effects its slow and it took a bit more time to figure out how to edit since im more used to after effects and premiere, but it can be done and with same output quality as after effects.

3rd method - Lightroom (paid software)

Lightroom can also be used to create a timelapse,i loaded all the images, colour corrected/resized/cropped one image and synced all changes to the rest of the images, after that selected the "create slideshow" option and here you have to spend some time to disable some of its options like background colour etc etc, i disabled everything since i only wanted to show the images in the final video, there's no option to set a framerate but since i knew the file @30fps would have a 38s duration i loaded a 38s wav music file and checked the match video to music duration :)  lightroom only allows to export to 1080p and like after effects and davinci resolve its slow but it works.

4th method - Lightroom + Premiere Pro (paid software)
I used lightroom to batch colour correct/resize/crop and export everything to 3840x2160, loaded all the images in to premiere pro and exported to 4k at 30fps... using this combination allowed me to create the final 4k video in 2 hours.

5th method - RawTherapee + DaVinci Resolve (free software)
Like the 4th method i used raw therapee to batch colour correct/resize/export the images to 4k resolution, after that i loaded everything in Davinci Resolve on a 4k timeline and exported it, its faster than using any of the first 3 methods but overall slower than using lightroom and Premiere Pro but quality is the same.

i didnt try other free software but i guess you can do the same by using RawTherapee or DarkTable to process/export the images and the use Kdenlive/openshot/Shotcut to creat the video.

my method:
Used Lightroom to process/export the images to 4416x2484, i imported all the images in Premiere Pro and created a 4k timeline, when importing the images  i choose not to resize to 4k timeline dimensions as i wanted to have a 13% zoom out effect from 4416x2484 to 3480x2160, added some music and exported it.

what about Linux?
I have a dualboot windows/ubuntu PC and you can create the same using free tools on linux, RawTherapee works very well on Linux, DarkTable i havent tried on Linux but works as well, for creating the video you can use Kdenlive, i dont recomend Davinci Resolve on linux because it crashes/hangs a lot and not all formats are supported.

and here's the video, watch in 4k when available:

Raw Video / Strange artifacts on video - EOS M
March 31, 2019, 10:55:44 AM
HI everyone.

Using latest Danne build (24 March), mcm, 1736x976, to get rid of the focus pixels i have to select 3x3 smooth, the options in fix focus dots dont work, also i noticed when recording the sky some artifacts appear, i can only remove them by using a denoiser, mlvapp internal denoiser wont work, here's a sample:

Am i doing something wrong?
Thanks

Hi everyone

Been using my eos m more frequently and and it is quickly using a lot of space on my hardrive, i have a few 1tb internal drives already full with backups (noy just mlv) and recently bought a 4TB drive for all the mlv's and phone/gopro videos. I usually convert to prores before editing it, i dont really like to erase videos that dont look very good to save space as it kind of feels like erasing a part of personal history/memories.

By converting to prores 4444 i usually get half of the original file size, but im also kind of loosing that "raw" information if i ever want to use the video again, from what i understand prores keeps somes of that info but not as much as mlv for future edits.

What do you do? keep the mlv's or convert to prores?

Thanks for any advice

Hi everyone!

Since im on holidays i decided to test the "new" capabilities of the EOS-M specially the mv1080 mode, i read that i need a fast card, one of the recomended cards is the Sandisk extreme pro:
https://www.amazon.com/Tarjeta-Memoria-SanDisk-Extreme-hasta/dp/B01J5RHBQ

but it seems its only available in the normal sd card size, i wont be able to use it in action cams and other devices that use micro sd cards, i found one micro sd card from the same brand, it seems it has the same caracteristics but its sdxc instead of sdhc:
https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Extreme-microSDXC-Memory-Adapter/dp/B06XYT37NK

Will the micro sd card work on the EOS-M?

What micro sd card do you recomend?

Also when trying out the new builds i've encountered a problem with red/pink/white/ pixels apperaing on the lcd screen/footage when using raw video... if i disable raw video the pixels dont appear neither in the lcd screen or footage.

can anyone help me understand where this pixels problems come from? only appear when using raw video, this problem only appeared after trying the july build from "here", i loaded the version i was using before but the problem doesnt go away.

thanks to anyone that could help
