thia is NOT a rant !!
I apritiate any effort being done for ML and 5D3

yesterday was uaing your build for the first time in a real world scenario

I had a problem with whic I cant define yet so will leave it for a diffrent post
but I couldnt get to see the full frame even in idle

how ever !
I shot a 20 min interview, which when coming back home was 1:20

I was one shooting this(one 20M REC)
but in the end some thing was wrong
and I got no indication for.

camera kept looking like all ia good and recording.

few post back on this thread I was concering
the lack of the widget wich show you both card are working

this is what I was reffering to.

yes, it could have been me not "knowing my gear/ML version" and by that I mean, maybe there was indication of somthing worng and I just didnt know to look for it.
or not even related to the changes you have made
only to the way data is presnted.
I sould have done my home work better and practice this changea.

again, *thank you for bringing new  idea/versions
for our 5D3, dont stop*
but if you find a way to present card data like in legacy mode
I would be happy

1) Take a card and delete autoexec.bin, ML dir and ML-SETUP.FIR.
2) Copy extracted build contents to card.
3) Startup cam and configure ML settings as needed.
4) Backup ROM dumps.

5) Delete autoexec.bin, ML dir and ML-SETUP.FIR on second card.
6) Copy autoexec.bin, ML dir and ML-SETUP.FIR from card one to card two.

Redo 5) and 6) for card 3 to n
thanks, will tty this on the next build.

Change "Kill global draw" to off
great it works, thanks.

OK now when I am all set, between
what I can do
and
what is most comfterble to use..

what is your goto witg this new settings

p.s
when "kill global drraw" is set to "off" the status of cards recording is gone, and I have no idea if card spanning is working without problem(some time I see only one card working and I need to restart)
if you have a workaround?..

can you please suggest your step by step goto when dealing with update please?

lets say I have 3 cards
they are all running ML, with my configuration.

now a new build was announced
I am downloading and unzipping files.

General Help Q&A / Update procedure
September 28, 2023, 03:44:31 PM
Hello dear ML users,

We have guides to install.
We have guides to uninstall.

however, we do not have an Update procedure.
at least not that I am awarr of...

I am a long time ML user
I am using 5D¡¡¡, with dual cards config.

I have 6 SD cards carring my ML install.
whenever I need to update for a new build, I am getting an headack.
uninstalling, formating, copying new build, installing, copying emergancy  backup.. etc

doing this 6 times, for each SD card.

What whould be the correct approch for this situation?

thanks

Hi,
I need a script that get lens information like: focal_length and focus_distance, and send that information to a PC thru a usb port in realtime.
Is that possible? I didn´t find anything about usb communication to a PC in ML Lua manuals.
Another way to do it?

Please help.-
Best,
Niko
yes, what exactly do you need ?

Danne,
I am using your awsome builds from when you started to release them,
thank you for that.

I allwayse had my "AUTOMATIC" settings for ML
3.5k
Allwayse turning off bit depth from movie tab
and aspact ratio as well.
and tought that, one should handle all of these settings from with in raw tab.
14bit loss less was my goto.

the output was amazing and i was happy with it.
card spanning and sd OC
along with all the hacks
helped to get near continuse shooting,
but I always had random crashs and alwayse crash when some pixeles are over exposed

in one of your latests post here, you have mantioned  running 12bit on movie tab.
so when installing your latest update, I left the bit depth checkbox on 12bit.
Then I was shooting over exposed and didnt not crash and everything feels much more stable.

can you please explain what is the bit depth checkbox different from both tabs ?

thanks

I use 14-bit 3.5K 2.39:1 all the time and the only problem I face is that I cannot always accurately ETTR (sometimes I have to stop down 1/3 to max 1 EV in order to get continuous rec). This is also an advantage though, as I'm pretty confident that rec. will stop if I inadvertently were clipping highlights ;)

3.3K is continuous in all situations for me.

For UHD (which natively is 2.61:1 btw) I think you will have to switch to 12 bit, however I didn't test it much, preview is completely broken at this time.

They are 1x1 crop modes, so the math is pretty simple here. Just divide full sensor pixel width count by rec. resolution. I recall that 3.5K is perfectly 1.6x — which makes this mode fine even with APS-C lenses 8)

Absolutely.

LV is not exciting, but Bilal is working on it! So fingers crossed ;) Currently I use fast grey preview on LCD just to have an idea of framing and an external HDMI monitor for focusing. Unfortunately HDMI out is equivalent to the x5 cropped zoom area, so it is impossible to focus subjects on the right or the left of the frame.

My cards:

SD: SanDisk 128 GB Extreme PRO 95 MB/s, Class 10, U3, V30
CF: Lexar 256GB 1066x 160 MB/s UDMA 7 VPG-65

HTH
how do you get framing on lcd and realtime on monitor?

There´s no 60fps with full real time preview.

Personally I wouldn´t use 5D3 recording critical material under stressful situations. Under controlled, more loose situations I would use it.
I suggest you test out a few presets before recording. Anything besides 720p material should work.
Not sure but I think 40fps could be used also with 1080p h264. also nice.
i was testing again and again the this week,
one of them was the 60fps mode
and i had a realtime preview, what am i misaing ?
it actually turn out really nice.

i just tested 1080 40fps.
can you explain why you favoring this mode?
thanks in advabced

As a wedding cinematographer i recommend to use the most reliable 1080p settings. The customers dont give a sh1t about 4K-6K, they care about the emotions. So proper framing and careful focusing is much more important than 3,5K / 5,7K crispness.
If you can do slow motion reliably like 48 fps with all the assist tools working it's even better, but im not sure if the 5D can save audio in that mode. External audio recording could be the solution.

So 1920x1080 10 bit lossless 24/48 fps is your best choice. Why not 14 bit? You dont want to work with 500GB+ of footage at the end of the day...
thank you for replay

again, this is not a client, its my sister, and she dont care about it, it was me who asked to take my cam for a ride during her weddeing.
I do want to make the best.
I might take your & denna suggestion,
this is why I am here for.

i think I am going to test the 1080 40fps mode now.
see how it works

1920x1080p 40fps with realtime preview works. Other modes are a compromise gaining higher fps.
compromise ?

what about the 60fps option?
you are not recomending it ?

I want to use your suggestion.
is this 40fps stable (stable as magic lantren can be ) ?
whould  you use it for the entire shoot, or only when needs A slow motion ?

General Chat / Advice on wedding videographing

I have been a ML user from 2013 on my 5D3.
I am an ex proffetional studio steel photographer.
At the moment a softwer developer, and a hobbyist magic lantern user.

My sister is getting married (second merrige), and taking it very chill and slow.
How slow? She scedualed a steel photographer for up until the ceremony and that's it.

Yesterday she called me and asked if can take some steel shot for her.
I stand up and agreed, but asked her if she would like me to go artistic and take video  of before and during the ceramony and she agreed.

I have been testing every preset during the last week.
I don't know which path to take.

1080 so I can take 60fps as well - no issues with liveview
3.5k which is crisp and beautyfull  - live view only center of frame
5.7k which I am not sure how to describe. It looks so good in some shots, but I remmebr hating it a while ago- live view only top of frame

Any smart advice from you pros ?

What do you guys think about the 5.7k mode ?

I have noticed that its less grainy in 5.7k, could this be true statement  ?

If so, will it out perform 3.5k in low light ?

Ic you were me, for a wedding before video what mode would you choose ?
