Hi all,

I was recently out in Portugal and my GH6 and GH5 were being used on job, so thought I would dust off the trusty old 5D3 and test out the anamorphic mode from Danne's build. This camera still blows me away! No special edits or order, just clips in the timeline with a bit of music.

Hi guys,

Have just started a series on Youtube teaching filmmaking basics. The idea is that I teach as I learn to hopefully improve my skills and others can benefit.

I shot everything in raw. I know there are some talented people on this forum so was hoping to get your honest opinion of how I can improve it ready for episode 2.

Raw Video / Help. Strange lines when shooting Raw
December 29, 2018, 08:23:26 PM

rudyard kipling short poems

Hi,

I was on a shoot recently shooting in crop mode. 1920/60. 100/1 of a shutter to stop light flicker (i'm in the UK) and various apertures but mainly f2.8.

Part way through the shoot I noticed these horizontal lines on my image. I couldn't find a way around it until I switched to either PAL 50p.

Any ideas? is there a way to remove in post processing?

Thanks

Hi guys,

Final part of our Interrail trip across Europe.

I used Lightroom to colour the clips as I come from a photography background so felt more natural for me.

Feedback would be great!

Share Your Videos / Lightroom Grading, opinion please!
November 13, 2018, 07:27:28 PM
Hi guys,

Previously I have been grading my clips by using the mlv app, exporting to prores with a flat profile and using a lut and tweaking in premiere pro. For this one I went back to an old (and long) workflow grading my dng files in Lightroom. It is way longer but I feel I have way more control. I understand that resolve would be quicker but I just don't know my way around it.

I wanted to know if the extra effort was worth it. Could you give me your opinion on the grade? https://youtu.be/eY80kpHFOag

Also anyone else using Lightroom? If so quickest workflow?

Thanks

Some shots from a trip back in April to Zurich, Switzerland. It is a beautiful place and cant recommend it highly enough!

I recommend viewing a Zurich travel guide and researching the best sites. We viewed the Grossmunster and Fraumunster churches and sat by Lake Zurich. I wish we had time to visit Uetliberg however!

I shot the entire video with the 5D Mark III. I used the new 4k crop rec module and shot everything in 60fps 14 bit lossless raw. The lens was mainly the Canon 24-70 f2.8L version and some on the Samyang 14mm T3.2.

Would love your feedback!

Hi,

I have been messing around with raw for around a year now and evolving my knowledge. One area I still lack in is colour grading. Previously I had shot raw or h264 not both. I shot a small personal project https://youtu.be/uVGAPL-hBcQ and really struggled to mix the two. The raw seemed muted. I did try to play around with lumetri but in my opinion without success.

My workflow used to be export all frames to dng then grade the first frame and apply to all in Lightroom. I am from a photography background so felt much more in control but the final output was not great.

Since then my process has been convert to pro res with a slog 3 picture profile, not sure why slog 3 but just seemed to work very well with the eoshd 3.5k raw lut. I would then tweak shadows etc from there.

Any tips or resources would be greatly appreciated. Also a quicker workflow! I use footage for Mac which only converts one video at a time :(.

Thanks

Shot in beautiful Brighton in South East England. I had a Canon 1DX Mark II for the weekend along with a DJI Ronin S. The clips were shot with the 24-70mm f2.8 L version. Timelapses were shot on the Canon 5D Mark III using Magic Lantern. I used 120fps for almost all the shots and played with time remapping in post. Music and sound effects from epidemic sound.

Would love some constructive criticism!

A video from a recent trip to Paris. A quick 24 hour stop over before heading to the next location.

I shot all the video using a Canon 5D Mark III in 60 fps. I used the Footage app for Mac and applied a S-Log3 preset. Exported to Prores 444 and edited in Premiere Pro.

I had some spare time before a photoshoot in Brighton and decided to play around with some Magic Lantern 3K. I shot at 3008 x 1536 in 24p. I used the Footage app for Mac and applied a S-Log3 preset. Exported to Prores 444 and edited in Premiere Pro.

This week I toyed around with buying a Canon 1DC but there is something still special about the 5D Mark III with ML.

A shot from a recent visit to Folkestone in Kent. I shot this with a Canon 5D Mark III using magic lantern software. Using the crop mode I shot it in 1920 x 800 @ 60 fps. I then used the Footage app on Mac to convert to pro res 444. Edits using Abobe Premiere Pro.

Raw Video Postprocessing / 60fps & AE, HELP!
March 21, 2018, 12:06:34 AM
Hi,

I recently tried out the new crop module of the 5d3 and have a lot of 60fps raw dng's having converted them using footage.

I wanted to try after effects as resolve just crashes for me and I am much more comfortable using ACR coming from a photography background.

My current process is creating a comp in AE 1920 x 1080 60fps (I haven't decided which clips I want to slow yet). I then take the first dng and select image sequence and edit in ACR. I click and interpret the footage to 60fps as AE defaults to 30. I then drag the footage to the comp and resize to 1920 x 1080. I then export the footage in Pro res.

This seems painfully slow to do one by one, I have never used AE before so I would be grateful if anyone could explain how I can import my DNG's grade them in ACR one by one (I like this grading method) then fit them all to 1920 x 1080 60fps and export as individual pro res files within AME.

Is this possible?

Thanks in advance

I have recently picked up a Canon 5D Mark iii and have been testing the crop modes.

https://youtu.be/rUGzd5yTbxQ

I shot a mixture of 1080p (first three scenes), 3K and 3.5K. I have exported in 4K to maintain the maximum quality and reduce Youtube compression.

Looking forward to testing more with the 5d3 and really testing its capability. Look forward to some 4 & 5k tests!

General Help Q&A / At a crossroads! Help!
January 30, 2018, 12:30:22 PM
Hi guys,

I find myself at a bit of a crossroads.

I have recently made the decision to follow my passion and make a career from videography and photography.

I have been using my 60d for a while now and shooting raw has given it a new lease of life. Even if the 60d has possibly the worst buffer!

I have been building up my business at evenings and weekends and have started to bring in some money.

The camera is sufficient for my photography needs apart from really wide angle stuff. I feel the video quality let's me down however.

I know that there is more to video quality and that story, audio, lighting etc make a huge difference which I am aiming to improve.

I have started to invest in my lenses starting with a 24-70 f2.8 L and a samyang 14mm t2.2.

My requirements are:

* Good low light capabilities
* Great 1080p image, 4K would be great but not a necessity
* Slo motion capability, 120fps ideal but can get by with 60.
* Autofocus is not essential but I have recently started making tutorials like this https://youtu.be/R0VutMsL7iY and would be handy.

I want the business to self sustain itself so my question is do I save a little more and buy a 5d3 with a view of shooting raw or do I borrow the money at 0% for something like a 5d4 or another suggestion you may have?

Thanks in advance

Hi guys,

Link to my latest video from a trip to Berlin, Germany. https://youtu.be/2jOH6e8pzIs

This trip was a bit of an experiment, testing hyperlapses, timelapses and 60fps raw.

My workflow was as follows:
MLV raw viewer convert to DNG sequence
DNG to Pro Res using DaVinci Resolve
Edited in Premiere Pro
Lightroom for hyperlapses and timelapses

Would love some feedback! Good or bad

Hi,

This is no doubt a simple fix but I can't find the answer.

I shot my footage in 2:35 aspect ratio raw. I have converted my footage to prores using resolve. I am now working with the edit in premiere pro and when adding warp stabiliser to clips it gives a frame shaking type look.

I understand this is down to my sequence settings but can't work it out. I want to be able to stabilise my clips then export in 16:9 to give the filmic matt bar effect.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

General Chat / First paid shoot, HELP!
October 20, 2017, 01:41:06 PM
Hi,

I have secured my first paid client in my quest to make photography and videography my full time gig.

The client is a mens hair product company and they are looking for a cinematic scene to be used in the launch of their new product in November.

The shoot is on Sunday and I was hoping to get some tips from from some of you with more experience out there.

The video will document the model getting their haircut and styled using the product. The client would like me to emulate this video https://www.instagram.com/p/BXN10-zn-e5/?taken-by=dukehyde

From what I can see they have shot it in a higher ffs and done some speed ramping. Also a shallow depth of field, not sure if it was for creative purposes or due to lack of light.

I guess what I would like to know is does anyone have any general tips, problems I am likely to face and or how you would shoot or improve on the above video.

Thanks
Rob

Share Your Videos / 60D 60fps RAW Test Video
October 13, 2017, 11:59:06 PM
Hi Guys,

My first true venture into shooting raw. I have been using magic lantern for a while but never raw. I love slo mo so chose to shoot everything in 60fps.

Check out the video: https://youtu.be/uxsOHBmeQ4s

Would love some feedback!

My experiences:
Due to the small buffer on the 60d card trying to shoot 60fps at the highest resolution possible I was getting a max of 11 second clips.
I used Lightroom to grade the footage, this is a program I am comfortable with so having that flexibility was great!
Having crop marks when actually recording would of been handy.
