this video is an even better example of what dolby vision can do for our raw footage.  i shot it in 2018 while starting out tinkering with the preamp gains, and to put it to the test, i shot these scenes in the most challenging conditions possible.  i didn't expect any of it to look good, but of course i hoped...

with dolby vision, details in the colour emerge in very "bad" spots, bringing it to life!  a perfect example is when i open the fridge door in the very dim kitchen, and the blown out highlights on the top shelf have beautiful correct colour.  this happened without any tweaking or desperate measures...

while i was at it, i made some updated blender scenes taking advantage of the newly improved particle physics.  i'll be doing a video about this.

I thought this was already as good as it could get, but again, dolby vision gives just a little bit extra!

it was a little more difficult to handle the flames, as there were some vertical lines in them, but it was easy to fix in resolve by using a node that was keyed to them and applying blur on the red channel only.

Share Your Videos / automagic dolby vision grading
April 18, 2022, 08:28:00 PM
after having graded a bunch of videos with dolby vision, i've created a power grade for resolve that incorporates everything i've been doing manually, which actually isn't that much...  mainly sat vs sat and lum vs sat curves and a few other adjustments on the wheels.

i applied that power grade to this video, and did nothing else:

You should start a new thread asking that question!
I can't give advice on either of those two cameras since I use the 5d3, but I'm sure others will give you great advice!

I'm definitely getting 140 MB/S on my 5d3 (113)

It fluctuates slightly in the load balancing between the two cards, generally around 60 for the SD and 80 for the CF.

Unfortunately sustained clipping, even mild, eventually leads to stopping.

I like to shoot challenging scenes with the green channel clipping a little bit, which is easily (automagically) corrected in post, and even that causes the recording to eventually stop.  It only needs a tiny bit more throughput!

Here's hoping it gets found one day :)

But a very slight reduction in resolution fixes that for now!

This should give plenty of headroom for the 3.3 and 3.5k modes with the realtime preview :)

yeah, i enabled both cards and spanning and i also now have continuous recording at 3616*1536 23.976 @14 bits (unless overexposed)

amazing...

bilal, you are putting the magic back into magic lantern, brother!

thanks for the update.

i'm only using the sd card for my test, since i thought that's where the gain would be...

sandisk 170 mb/s, same overclocking settings as you.

can you try just the sd card to see what you get?

I tried it on my 5d3 (113) and it works, but i'm only getting about 3 MB/s improvement.  Nice, but not 13!

Is there something in the operation you didn't mention that might be obvious only to you?

I'm glad you enjoy them!
I'm in the Long Point Basin, on the north shore of Lake Erie, in the south of Ontario in Canada.

I've been re-grading more videos with Dolby Vision, and the results are fantastic.
This video was shot in low light, and the richness of the colour palette is phenomenal, with no banding to be found, and grading with Dolby is so easy!
Basically it only requires careful adjustment (rolloff) of the lum vs sat and sat vs sat curves on the right side of the curve. I'm guessing it is an issue somewhere with how resolve reads MLV DNG files?
It's not too difficult to adjust.

i'm not allowed to discuss that on this forum.

just take it as a mystery :P

sure...
superior results in resolve by using MLVFS.

effortless grading with tim's dolby vision trick!
all i did was roll off the saturation on the highs and pull back the highlights to exactly 1000 nits on the HDR scopes...
the closeup at the end is breathtaking.

timbytheriver came up with a method for hybrid HDR-REC709 processing with Dolby Vision, and it made a dramatic improvement to this example video I shot a few years ago on my 5d3 (3072*1308 14 bit)

I previously had serious difficulties with the more extreme dynamic range shots, particularly the closeup of the oscilloscope.  It formerly required trickery such as spot exposure reduction on the LED to get the right saturation without losing all the contrast in the rest of the shot.  Now it was straightforward and looks great with no trickery!

This workflow also revealed details that were previously absent, such as the sky through the (filthy) windows in dimly lit interior scenes.  Incredible colour!

On another note, I was so pleased with the new grade that I re-rendered the blender animations, and in the process I found that the "eevee" realtime raytracer is now very close to production ready, so I used it, and it was a real game changer.  What a treat to see lighting adjustments on the fly...

timbytheriver suggested I should try using mlvapp to do basic exposure and colour temperature adjustments and then use the arri preset to export for editing and final grading in resolve in arri log c (using the CST plugin).

I gave it a shot for this music video and I'm hooked!  The fantastic mlvapp colours make it into resolve!

Shot in 14 bit raw on my trusty old 5d3 @ 3616*1536 using card spanning and overclock. (except the cellphone footage of the guitars!)

no effects of any kind were used.  it's just from the lens.
the only post processing i did at all was adding the golden colour to the flares.  somehow, white just didn't work for me!
it's hard to believe it's been 2 years since i shot that video.  i should shoot something new with only candlelight to see how much better it looks today with the progress we have made with gain optimisation...

January 24, 2022, 09:03:02 PM
here is the test clip.
this was shot at iso 800 without dual iso.  the exposure was set for the very bright led bulbs beside the big monitor, with no clipping.  the room is quite dark, with a 15W led bulb behind the large monitor for indirect light.
no noise reduction, but i (always) desaturate the blacks.  any colour there is just chroma noise!
there's no key light in this test. i lifted the shadows by 1.5 stops.
this is a test of the "halation" plugin in resolve.  that's what is making the bright objects glow...

thank you!
i use the uhd 1:1 preset and then just set the resolution to 3840*1536 in the submenu.

card spanning and overclock is required.  i have a sandisk 170mb/s card that i overclock to 160mhz.

it's important to disable global draw, and your first recording of the session will only go for a few seconds and then stop.  after that, long recordings are possible.  if you don't clip too much, continuous is possible until you run out of space!

hey everyone, it's nice to see active discussion again...

i've found that youtube quality goes up if you upload at least 2560 horizontal resolution with a suitably high bitrate such as 20mbps.

i'm preparing for my next music video and it seems like the test shot i made last night with no key light is worth sharing here with you all...  i'll upload it and share a link here.

December 24, 2021, 04:35:33 PM
The opening scene of this video is by far the darkest scene I have yet pulled off, far darker than the candlelit scene (which had nothing but 6 candles).
ISO 1250, shot at 3616*1536, 14 bit lossless with card spanning and overclock.  NO noise reduction, exposed for the fiber optic light curio.

The rest of the video is dual ISO with much more light.

Watch in 4k in a very dark room!

Read the video description for more info.

Reverse Engineering / Re: UHS-I / SD cards investigation
December 22, 2021, 05:22:17 PM
Hi all,
I'm feeling the itch to buy an SD card for my good old 5d3 if there's anything that might be worth testing for overclocking...
The sandisk 170MB/s extreme pro I am using now is excellent and always reliable, so I don't "need" a new card, but if there's something new with the right udma characteristics that may be faster, I'd order one to try it out!
Has anyone been keeping abreast of anything new and interesting?

thanks for the compliment!
timbytheriver helped make it possible, and we continue to improve our joint effort.
i tried those other options you suggested long ago and both create more problems than they solve in my experience...

i remastered the video after making a different processing technique, pushing it even harder and it didn't break!  it really shows in the studio scenes where my face is visible.
