Unless I'm mistaken, choosing that option negates dual iso and simply uses the high iso half, cutting the vertical resolution in half...

Using Danne's latest stable 5d3 build, I'm getting these vertical stripes on mid tones.
The lower the exposure, the more prominent the effect.
Provided is a well exposed night scene, and you can see the effect on the wall.  I exaggerated the processing in mlvapp to showcase the issue, the receipt is included along with the MLV in the zip.
It's not a fatal flaw, especially at higher exposures, but it really shows at lower exposures, the kind I typically use.
I provided this well exposed example to show it isn't just a problem in the darkest case scenario.  This is a definite issue when exposing for highlights.

It looks the same in resolve also...

I have a friend who has the perfect skillset and experience for this...  he was hacking all the way back to 1981, doing hardware and software disassembly from the bottom up by hand.  I have been pestering him to help out, but he refuses, saying "good luck to them".

I send him links to interesting photos and tidbits such as what you shared yesterday, hoping to tempt him back to the dark side ;)

Please keep sharing what you are doing, and I will keep forwarding it to him!

Thank you for what you are doing.

12 bit is working really beautifully in my 5d3 testing!

I just finished a wide range of extreme scenarios, and everything is looking excellent.

This example image is almost misrepresentative of the extreme conditions, it looks so good...

Exposed for the bulb, zero clipping, and falling off to near darkness.  so dark that the camera display is basically black except for the bulb.

The curve I made for it in mlvapp linear mode is vertical.

Chroma noise removed with neat video.

That's all that was done outside of mlvapp.

You guys should be extremely proud of what you are enabling with this magic :)

I'll be shooting a film noir video using this, and it's so great to plan shots to take advantage of this!

the excellent highlight capabilities of mlvapp are almost always better for me than with resolve.

it really is amazing what this program can do...

12 bit test...

edit:

deleted.  i fumbled around and eventually the flickering was resolved.  it was definitely some random confluence of factors.  it's rock solid now.

Technically this is not too hard to implement. But I still have no good idea how to present this to the user and how to integrate it into the UI. I like to have it:
- easy to use
- best: no preview loading times for the elements
- good integration into GUI
I tried out some solutions, but I did not like it at all, so I deleted all this again. And both, Resolve and LR, are not really good here too. So I don't know where to steal the idea... LOL

whatever you decide on, the user will get used to...

i didn't like the way resolve does it, but soon i developed muscle memory for it and then it was completely natural, and now i wouldn't ask for anything different.  we get used to anything eventually ;)

do what you think is best and we will love it!

and even better to have receipt slots!

just had to get that in there  :P

just sayin'  8)

here's a new extreme test i did with danne's fantastic dual iso build, along with linear grading in mlvapp, producing unbelievable results!

it works very well to test demosaicing also, as the ultimate test.  nothing works on it perfectly (yet!) ;)

look with 100% zoom at the light bulb...

the dynamic range in this shot is beyond what i thought possible with the 5d3.  that crazy bulb is the only light source in a black scene, and the lens on it magnifies the intensity but it doesn't put out much illumination, so you've basically got a large shockingly bright point source in a dark scene.

included is the receipt for the linear grade i did in mlvapp.

PS: i found a workaround for my difficulties in grading with the curve in linear mode, and it's so simple!  drop the DPI way down on my gaming mouse while adjusting the curve.  the button was right under my finger the whole time! :P

That's some pretty ace video...  The initial closeup of the cat was stunning.
What's with this miraculous camera?  Who needs a 5d3?  :P

It's getting hard to keep up with all the progress lately!

Exciting times...  Keep up the great work everyone!
#436
That was really informative, but you should be speaking!  I wanted to know your thoughts about what we're seeing...

What a treat to see no lag on the external monitor.  I'm guessing the 5d3 doesn't support anything beyond 1080?

It would be interesting to see if it's possible to do accurate monitoring in 1080 of the 1*3 binning somehow?

Sorry if these are already answered, this is all new to me, but it definitely looks appealing!

It feels like a puzzle that has some pieces missing though :P

Hopefully not for long!

It's a sad side effect of the march of technology that so much potential is lost by instant obsolescence.  Magic lantern and its excellent community is the rebel fleet...

thanks for the video!
#437
Ahhh, that's a different story then!

sorry i have not worked with hdmi, so thanks for the clarification!

this sounds excellent...  looking forward to seeing it in action!
#438
i just took it for a spin, and the 1*3 crop mode instantly locks up the camera, requiring a battery pull to revive again, consistently.

the 17fps preset works though.

the build from january works fine for me.

any suggestions?

Have you seen this thread? https://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=22770.0

I'm also interested in this camera. But still not sure if I can live without 5d3 MLV 14-bit RAW capability...

i'm with you...

it simply won't be possible to get acceptable results with even 10 bit 422 avc for intense grading like i do in the shadows.  it'll fall apart...  14 bits raw for me!

but just think how nice this will be when it has magic lantern!

i'll buy one just to help however i can, since it seems this has a more promising future than the 5d4...
#440
thanks!

whenever nodes are ready, it'll be great, but mlvapp is definitely great right now!

i didn't think this video could look this good.  there is some real magic with linear in mlvapp!
#441
everyone involved with developing mlvapp should be very proud.

i can't wait to see where it will go... especially with nodes and receipt slots! ;)

seriously, it's already a great program, and i really enjoyed grading with it.

btw, if you recall the demosaicing challenged shot with the wires, i managed to completely overcome the problem... here's how:

in mlvapp, i downscaled the shot from 3072 to 1920 using sinc

then i loaded it into virtualdub and first, resized it to 3840, and then used the "high quality" half resolution filter to drop it back to 1920 as part of the conversion to 10 bit x.264

no more problems with that shot, and it also improved the demosaicing on some patch cables hanging on the wall  beside the night light in the wide angle scenes.

maybe you can try to do something like that as a function in mlvapp.  it's worth checking out!
#442
Check this out and then try to say you can't do serious grading with mlvapp...

iso 109 never looked better ;)

exported from mlvapp using prores 444 and then converted to 10 bit x.264 RGB using virtualdub2

i love mlvapp!

#443
excellent, thanks!

yup, i use the dock on a separate monitor at maximum size.  it's workable, but the precision required for nonlinear grading would make "nudging" points very desirable :)
#444
i just finished regrading a video i did last year with mlvapp, but this time with linear gamma, and it looks stunning!

doing it made me wish for precise control for the curve points.  possible to use arrow keys (maybe with some way to select them first without moving them, like maybe shift-click?)

1 single pixel movement makes a very big difference in linear mode.  this would be really helpful for sure!

i'll post the video soon.

PS: i think vegas would prefer 8 bit PNG.  possible to have both options?
#445
I did a serious torture test to compare the results of gain reduction vs your magical dual iso...

The scene was extremely dark, with a direct harsh light as the subject, filled with shadow detail.

Even though the gain reduction version was shot at 3072, thanks to your magic, the dual iso version looks just as good.  The upscaling works beautifully!

FYI, I also shot it in stock canon iso 200, and that was not even worth mentioning.

I'm looking forward to trying this in my next video, I just hope it can work smoothly without any surprise stops.

fingers crossed!

keep up the great work!

addendum:

I am running into a brick wall after a few hundred frames, with a fresh fast CF card.  I get continuous at 3072px normally with iso 109, but obviously this mode requires more bandwidth.  Is there any possibility of card spanning with the sd card to get that little bit extra to at least get a less restricted recording time, if not continuous?

I really like what I'm seeing, but 300 frames just isn't enough...

#446
after you're done with the cf overclocking and lossless, it's time to grab a 5d4!!!

please!! :)
#447
if you guys start doing nightly builds, you'll soon have your 20 millionth download ;)
#448
thanks so much!

unfortunately it was already set up in resolve, so i finished it in there.  i had a thought of restarting in mlvapp, but that red led issue made me pause from that idea and just finish it in resolve...

but...

i think that with the exception of the led, it would have looked even better from mlvapp!

i had to use a second node on each and every shot to bring up the shadows more than was possible with a single curve in resolve's "true" linear mode.  i had to use a second curve with a bump at the bottom to get the same results i was getting with mlvapp from a single curve.

resolve just doesn't handle canon raw properly.  obviously it's not a priority for them.

workarounds are fairly easy, i suppose, but not needed with mlvapp!

i will DEFINITELY be grading my next video with mlvapp.
#449
this one turned out really well, at least i think so...

i'm totally loving linear gamma!

wow deafeyejedi, that image looks absolutely stunning!

what lens did you use?  i have a couple of friends that are interested in the eos m, and this might make a big difference...
