thanks to you both!
i'm slowing down with using the camera lately so it's not a huge loss to me if i fry it, but we'll see ;)
i've been thinking it over, and i am not sure if calibration would actually fix the last issue that i'm facing: the ugly vertical "scratches" in the darkest shadows when pushed very high in post.  it might help a bit, but i am not sure if it would make a real useful improvement.
i'm thinking about an approach to fix this...

This seems to be the limit of what can be done with the 5d3.
I'd like to try the sensor calibration that has been stalled for years, and I'm willing to risk frying my sensor!

I've gotta say, ACES 0.1.1 in resolve 17 is pretty amazing for magic lantern raw footage!

watch in at least 1440p for no quality loss.

really well done!
the visuals were great.
the only issue i spotted was some shadow halos in the shot where the woman was backlit and you lifted the shadows.  hopefully mlvapp will improve in that regard.  since you use resolve, you could have processed that shot in resolve to lift the shadows with no halos.
other than that small issue, flawless!

with regard to the editing, two small items that caught my attention (distracted me, actually)

the shot of them outside in the grape vine area showed a bunch of grapes at the end of the shot in the upper left corner of the frame.  i was waiting for a focus pull to the grapes!

the first camera walking shot of the father and son began too early in the source footage.  there was a second or so before he began to walk and it feels awkward.  better maybe to cut straight to the scene in motion?

small points.  nice work!

the resolve image looks darker because of the hdr workflow.  ignore that, it's the same frame.

i'm just sharing useful information.

peace.

The new debayering algorithm in resolve 17 works wonders with 5D3 3x3 footage!
It's so great that I no longer use other modes.
Real time correct preview is another treat!
Everyone with a 5D3 needs to try this.  I hope someday mlvapp will be able to debayer this well!
Seriously, this is a whole new lease on life for the 5D3.  I wonder if the 5D4 has a similar 3x3 mode?  Imagine what it could do with that improved sensor...

I wasn't 100% convinced that DWG was beneficial for SDR video, so I shot this extremely challenging scene and it really makes a difference!
When the clouds roll in, it stays beautiful.  This is static processing: one setting for the entire scene!

Raw Video / Re: AI algorithms for debinning
July 27, 2021, 04:15:25 PM
Hi everyone,
I was lurking and saw this discussion so I dusted off my 5d3 and shot this little clip using the anamorphic mode, converted to dng using mlvapp, and then stretched and graded in resolve.
I specifically wore the patterned shirt to stress test for moire, and it seems not bad, but if you look closely at my shorts you may notice vertical stripes that shouldn't be there!
But it is pretty subtle.
It's such a treat to have full frame recording.  It makes my 35mm T1.5 really look great!

It's a setup for the 5d3 made by timbytheriver and myself that facilitates optimising the gains on the camera to improve dynamic range and reduce noise in the shadows, especially chroma noise.

A1ex discovered the registers many years ago but development stopped quickly afterward.  It has since become taboo in this community, but if you search the forum you can find information if you are interested.

The long and the short of it:
If you carefully calibrate your camera, you can gain close to 1 stop of usable dynamic range, which is important to some of us.  It is not supported and there is no cooperation from anyone here.  Quite the opposite.

Everything you need to know is searchable.  I made a couple of tutorial videos some time ago.

It is only useful to anyone who is wanting to push their camera right to the limit.  For "typical" users it is probably not useful.  A possible barometer of applicability would be if you use a hardware tool to calibrate your monitor, and if you can see the details of my shirt in the video above.

Share Your Videos / a stress test of youtube at 1440p

With the talk about youtube performance, I thought I would give it a serious test using TNT at 1440p:

I shot this at 2560*1440 (14 bit using TNT) and graded it in resolve to put all it's got into the darks.

Watch it in a dark room on a good screen at 1440p!  Look closely at all the textures and detail of my black shirt under the coat.

As always, no noise reduction of any kind.  TNT at its best!

Encoded using NVENC h.264 @ 30MBPS

would it be possible to add the ability to remove jobs from the render list while rendering is underway?

when i am doing batch renders, splitting the jobs across multiple instances of mlvapp, invariably some finish earlier than others, and it would be nice to be able to have them take on clips from other instances without having the other one potentially redoing clips that were reassigned to other instances.

thanks!

General Development / Re: Cooled R5

actually, i think that canon did the right thing (within the bounds of their obvious marketing requirements of making it noncompetitive with their cinema line).

they wanted a camera that can be used only by amateurs for video while being as high quality as possible, and they achieved it.

the timer based thermal regulation makes a lot of sense if you think about it from a manufacturer's perspective:

the internal temperatures are getting dangerously high during demanding tasks like 8k recording, and they are not sufficiently regulating this, so they are shutting down before instant damage occurs.  but the other danger is long term damage from constantly cycling between overheated and cool conditions, especially for "cold solder" development, or even cracked circuit boards.

so they used intentionally "misapplied" thermal tape to actually slow the dissipation and employed a timer that won't allow the user to generate those dangerous temperatures again for 2 hours.  this way it slowly cools either to a safer operating temperature or completely to ambient temperature, depending on whether it is shut down completely or re-engaged after 20 minutes for photography only.  this was a wise setup within the restriction of being a consumer use only camera.  they should have been more upfront about it however to prevent the conspiracy theories (which were partially correct, but not taking into account the longevity factor listed above).  they underestimated the intelligence of the user to be able to understand their rationale, and in doing so have harmed their reputation for years to come.

and to make matters worse, they pushed out that firmware "upgrade" that reduced the timer values, which will almost certainly shorten the lifespan of the camera.

but their accountants probably decided it was better to appease the ignorant masses and sell more cameras even if they will be facing a lot of problems in a few years...  probably looks better on their balance sheet.  let's face it, they are probably counting on exiting the consumer camera space by then anyways thanks to cellphones as cameras...

so this hardware mod is an excellent idea in conjunction with proper thermal monitoring to ensure the camera is not being operated at dangerously high temperatures, which should have been done properly in the first place, regardless of marketing ideology.  it seems likely to me that the code is already in there, just not exposed to anyone but canon service personnel (for now!)

windows resolve users can now work with card spanning straight from the cards!

i combined the "lossless" version of mlvfs.exe with a newer version of dokan, and packaged it with my little batch file for "linking" 2 cards into one virtual drive, and added a readme file to provide step-by-step instructions.

once you are set up, you can take your 2 cards out of your 5d3, put them into your card reader, and resolve is ready to rock!

update (feb 2023) : Dokan version 1.0.3.1000 is recommended
