Share Your Videos / nature video - 5d3 3.5k 5x zoom mode
September 17, 2020, 01:44:38 PM
there's definitely something magical happening with danne's new 3.5k 5x zoom mode.

i was feeling lazy so i shot this episode on my CF card only, at approximately 2500*1250 (2:1 AR) @ 23.976, 14 bit

and it was as solid as a rock.  no stops with several 10-15 minute takes!

the new realtime preview is a joy to work with.

there's some serious magic in magic lantern these days...

i got gain reduction working with dual iso at last...

no noise reduction of any kind.  check out the dynamic range and clean shadows!

shot at TNT iso 100/1600

fun coincidence:  the old footage from my film that is interspersed was shot by me 10 years ago this month using magic lantern on my old 550d!
i originally produced this song back in 1989 and it was a nightclub hit around the world.  it was fun to redo it after all these years.

watch in 4k!

shot at 3616*1536 14 bits, 23.976 fps using card spanning and sd overclock.

24mm T/1.5

i've gotta say, after doing the last few episodes of beyond zen using the anamorphic mode, i prefer it to 1:1 uhd!  anamorphic footage is a lot easier to work with in resolve for smooth playback.  i had to use proxies for this video...

i just wish it could do true 2.35:1 without sacrificing horizontal resolution.  oh well, maybe someday?

in the meantime, enjoy:
PS: the long solo performance at the end was live as it was going down.  that's the real take.  it's so sweet to have reliable long duration video recording thanks to the card spanning and overclock!

things have really come a long way!

i tried the anamorphic 5k mode for my latest episode of mindful moments, and i am beyond happy with this wonderful mode!

it was a great experience in every way.  the preview worked smoothly, the buffer was always clear, and the image quality is excellent!

i used card spanning and sd overclock (160mhz), and everything just WORKED! with a pair of cheap 256gb cards, this mode will record continuously for over 60 minutes.

a huge thank you to everyone involved with these great advances in magic lantern, especially a1ex and danne.

THANK YOU!

all we need now is sensor calibration ;)

PS: i filmed this as the sun was rising, indoors, and about halfway through the recording the sun cleared the treetops and was shining directly onto the camera.  when i pressed stop the display was reporting 51C and this is pretty much the worst conditions.  no ventilation, indoors, in full sun...

shot at TNT iso 100, in near darkness, exposed to preserve the filament on the (night) light bulb visible in the scene.  the only light source was an ikea paper lamp in the distance.  you can see the shadows it casts when i move my hands around...

i could have added fill light, but that's not the point.  it was an exercise in what is possible.

there's no way you could push underexposed shadows this hard with stock canon 100 iso.  no way.  check out how beautiful the filament looks.

as always with my videos, zero noise reduction...

i'm not interested in the arguments from closed minds.  i'm only sharing this to encourage open minded people to try TNT!

is it possible to have a continuous beep option for critical errors such as unexpected stops while recording video?

while filming an episode outdoors the camera stopped recording and i was not able to hear the short beeps and i only found out when the lengthy scene was completed to find out the camera had stopped long ago.  a continuous beep would fix this!

thanks.

the candles are the only light source in a dark vocal booth...

no noise reduction of any kind.

edit: some people have noticed black "highlights" in the flames thanks to youtube degradation.  it's not in the source.  i'll try uploading a 4k version sometime in the future to roll the dice in the game of random quality reduction with the black box of unwanted youtube transcoding.

according to traditional zen, there's no such thing as "wasting time", but back then there was no equivalent of uploading videos to youtube to be randomly degraded.

edit 2: the cause of the black sun highlights on the candles was youtube not liking 10 bit h264.  here's an 8 bit hevc version:

tim's new Q menu system is working!

here's a new tutorial on using it, in which i recreate the opening shot from my recent music video, "biorobot's requiem", which i just redid using the new TNT build!

i did two videos (identically exposed) of the same scene, one at stock iso 200, and the other at TNT iso 120 (approx) and i am providing DNGs from both versions for everyone to play with.  I suggest loading them into rawtherapee, increasing the exposure by 1 stop to really see the shadows, and setting the histogram to log-log and increasing it's window vertically to your entire y resolution so you can really see the top spike and compare the two files.  you will see that i actually gave the 200 iso version a little MORE exposure to counteract the naysayers.

please grab the TNT build from tim's thread on "cleaner iso presets" and join in our quest!  this is only the beginning...

here's the file link:
https://bitbucket.org/rivertim/magic-lantern-danneclone/downloads/

and here's the video...  i recommend watching the second demo first so you can follow exactly what i am doing in this one!

here's another example, as posted later in the thread, included here also for your convenience:

Share Your Videos / introducing ISO 120!
December 13, 2019, 05:27:32 PM
using the technique i outlined in my second how-to video, i was calibrating the preamp gain of my 5d3 outside in the freezing cold temperature, and due to the chilling effect, i was able to push the preamp to 52, resulting in iso 120...

check out the results:

i exposed for the sunlit snow on the roof of my house in the background, meanwhile i am in the shade of the early morning, with no lighting of any kind, wearing all black.

look at the details in my black clothing.  look at the sunlit snow in the distance.  NO CLIPPING.  NO NOISE REDUCTION.

is that extreme enough for you?

this is by far the most beautiful and demanding video i have yet shot.

please, try this at home!

this is what timbytheriver is working on right now to incorporate into his "cleaner" presets...

as a bonus for me, i finally took notice of the resulting iso of the new settings!  :P

118 -- i've been lazily calling it "112" in recent videos just to distinguish it from my prior 111 settings.

interestingly, a1ex informed tim about why he was not getting 100% on the spot meter while i was making this video!  this technique partially relies on the spot meter, and although it is not 100% accurate according to a1ex, it is still doing the job!

(far) more progress is yet to be made... join us and help!

tim reminded me:  the video is missing one key piece of information (grrr) - i also rely on the histogram hitting 0.1EV  -- sorry for the omission!

Share Your Videos / music video shot at iso 118 - updated
December 07, 2019, 04:10:19 PM
this video is pushing the 5d3 right to the limit using iso 118

the setting is similar to the dark music video i made recently for the revenant redux of android rock, only darker still!

the opening shot was done with timbytheriver's new Q-menu build.  it was such a joy to so easily adjust the preamps, plus no waiting for the amps to settle!

regarding the opening shot:  it was by far the most challenging video i've done yet.  there's almost no light and the "LED" readout on the motherboard is unbelievably bright.  it's actually a series of tiny white led point lights, one for each "segment", covered in a red film.  you can see the little points of light and some areas where the film is not entirely covering the spaces.  NO CLIPPING, and the shadows are lifted to the moon.  try that with stock canon iso.  please.

the large monitor on the desk is at its brightest possible setting in a dimly lit room.  there's no direct light at all in the centre of the room.  look at the contents of the monitor, especially while i am playing with the "patch cables" on the virtual modular synth.

as always, no noise reduction at all...

introducing a new ISO!

timbytheriver and I are working together on refining the amplifier gain optimization, and here is my first video using the newest settings.

the results are simply beautiful...

see for yourself how rich and detailed the shadows are, and how the incredible richness holds up in the blacks even when the clouds roll in during the second half of the video --  all while the bright sunshine is completely relaxed!

as always, NO noise reduction of any kind.

i'm currently filming a dark in-studio video to really show what this new iso can do.  coming soon!

I'm not sure if this is worth mentioning, but it may be useful to do. this is something i have been dealing with for almost 2 years.

first off, i'm using the gain reduction hack.

when i'm filming, i use the option to turn off the camera display when idle to save on battery drain between shots.  at least once per session, usually a few times, the display is uncooperative for waking up.  sometimes it will eventually respond if i press the menu button, or failing that, the play button.  occasionally it will not cooperate at all, requiring a power cycle.  very rarely, only twice in two years, it wakes up but the amplifiers take a very long time to settle, 5 minutes or more.  i didn't catch this while filming one scene, and it left me scratching my head in post.  when it happened again the other day (the first time was 6 months ago) i caught it in camera and waited to see the outcome with the long settling time, and all was fine again.

i'm using the crop_rec_4k.2017Dec19.5D3113 build -- i know, i know, it's old, but it's the only way i can do iso 111 "by hand".  whenever i have tried to update things don't work properly or at all.

i'm not looking for someone to try to troubleshoot that build.  i'm only curious if (other than the amplifier settling issue) anyone else has problems waking up their 5d3 occasionally.  i would estimate that the benign "hassle waking up" probably happens 10% of the time.

thanks in advance

I shot this new episode today, back again at iso 111, and it was a great experience after doing the last one at stock iso 200.

exposing was so much easier, and doing the grade was the easiest yet.  I devised a new method for truly capitalizing on the strength of iso 111: the clean shadows...

the same setup for resolve as outlined in the original thread for ACES+REC2020, but here's how i graded this time:

exposure +5 (yes!)
reduce gain with the wheels until everything looks nice
add a touch of highlights to taste.

I used the same settings verbatim for every shot.  zero fiddling.

this was breathtakingly fast and easy.

as always, no noise reduction.

I shot this video exactly one year ago, and i was never happy with it, until I started working with ACES and REC2020!

the closeup of the oscilloscope was never right, with that bright red LED pointing right at the camera in low light.  i always had to use trickery to make it work, and now it just works!

there are a few challenging scenes in this one, and it is so nice to be able to grade it without having to reinvent the wheel for the tricky shots...

this is the way it should have always been!

as always, no noise reduction of any kind :)

i loaded up a video i made early this year as an experiment with dual iso and reprocessed it using my new workflow for aces+rec2020 (thanks luther!) and it was another incredible surprise!

all i can say is WOW!

it was so easy and it looks so beautiful!  there was a shot i rescued (the vine swinging beside the tree) that looks so amazing now, and it was so easy!

aces + rec2020 is seriously incredible.

yep, you read it right, I shot this one using stock canon iso 200...  I know i have been pushing too hard on here to get people to try iso111, and i apologize for that.

this was the first time in almost two years I shot something using a stock canon iso!  yes, it is still possible for me!  ;)

doing this was a truly eye opening experience that i would like to relate to you:

first of all, it was such a treat to not deal with the hack ;)

but seriously, let's get into the results...

a1ex is correct (of course!) that the gains in dynamic range are around a quarter to a half stop using the gain reduction, but i have to tell you, it makes a big difference when filming.  i'll get into that in a bit.

as you can see by the video, it still looks great.  there's no noise reduction here, and the noise is only slightly worse than my other episodes.  BUT...  i had to reshoot the video!  I originally shot it yesterday using the same exposures i would be using @iso111, and while filming i had no idea that anything was wrong until i loaded the footage into mlvapp to convert to dng.  suddenly i saw all this ugly noise in the shadows! :(

i didn't know it, but i have gotten spoiled by using the gain reduction for so long, and i had forgotten what stock canon iso does to darker areas when lifted!

so i reshot it today, but i pushed the exposure as hard as possible without clipping, and then things were more in line, just very slightly noisier than 111.

when i loaded it into resolve, i had to work just a little harder to get things looking right.  getting the balance right between the highlights and the overall brightness of the image wasn't as automagic as it was on the last episode, even though i am using precisely the same setup.  not a huge deal, but you may notice this is not quite as bright as the iso 111 episodes.  this is that slight loss of dynamic range in action...

again, as you can see, it is not earth shatteringly different, but there is a definite gain to be had by reducing the gain :P

possibly most importantly for me is how much easier it is to shoot while using iso 111.  if this makes sense, it feels more like a film camera.  the shadows are more robust, and one doesn't have to push so hard to keep them clean.  it just makes filming more enjoyable for me.

see the episode for yourself:

PS: i won't be evangelizing 111 anymore.  it is up to everyone else to play with it if they wish to!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSsicyDa7gY

This is by far the best setup I have ever tried, even better than the last one!

and it is unbelievably easy to use, while giving spectacular results...

under colour management:
input colour space : bypass
timeline colour space : ACEScct
output colour space : rec2020 HLG ARIB STD-B67
limit output gamut to output colour space
timeline to output tome mapping: luminance mapping

everything else default

yank the highlights down with both the camera raw control and the tiny input box at the bottom of the colour wheels page, and then push it hard.  it looks fantastic!

maybe a little better since it is iso 111 ;)

but don't tell the placebo salesmen.  they'll throw a fit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_ch8UhDZWo
#78
I tweaked the setup again, and after doing some experiments with ACES and the CST plugin, I found that it was time to go back to linear gamma, and what a difference it makes!

I shot this new episode in the most ridiculously challenging conditions, in the heart of the forest on a sunny day with strong winds blowing dark clouds in and out of the shot.  I also wore a shiny velvet shirt to maximize the strong highlights during the sunny times.

ISO 111.  Dual iso could NOT handle these conditions.  No way.  It would crumble during the dark times.  Hopefully stoogetoob didn't ruin the video too much with their compression artifacts...

Check it out, and then we can discuss the resolve setup ;)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvIzPa2BX5w

The great experiences I'm having with the colorspace transform setup in resolve inspired me to shoot further to the left than ever before, and the results are fantastic.

iso 111 using the much maligned amplifier hack.  no noise reduction.  no noise to be reduced!

check out the dynamic range.  every shot except the deep forest shots are in full sun with full shadows.

grading took 2 minutes.  effortless.  mlvapp to convert mlv to cdng, then straight into resolve.  easy.

I saw some discussion on here of the colorspace transform plugin on resolve, so I took it for a spin, trying it out on a really problematic shot from this video of the oscilloscope, close up, with a crazy bright red LED pointing right at the camera.

Incredibly, it handled it and I was able to keep the red colour without it blowing out to white!

WOW!

I was so excited that I regraded the video for the last time using this plugin and I am so happy with the result.

This is a really excellent grading workflow for resolve.  It is doing what I thought to be impossible...

5d3 raw, using the iso gain hack as usual for me.  no noise reduction.

updated again, using ACES and REC2020, my new default thanks to luther's suggestion!  it took minutes to grade from scratch and i love the results!

for the first time, the final scene looks right.  the light is coming through orange stained glass, and what was always horrible and muddy suddenly looks exactly right simply by using these colourspaces!

plus, in the same shot, the highlights on the silver rings on the synth controls are gorgeous!  all thanks to the setup.  the grading was so easy that i can't believe it!

this is a new version of a music video i did last year, revisited to do improved animations with the newly released blender 2.8

they've really improved raytracing speed with the cycles renderer, quite nicely.  i managed to get exactly the look i wanted for the animations to blend (pun intended) with the gritty underexposed raw video of the 5d3.  the rendering took less time than the original run, even though i did it at 4k.

pretty sweet considering i'm using a 750ti.

that said, it still took over a week (24/7) but i am very pleased with the results.

i did a very slight adjustment to the grading of the video while i was at it, using hyalinejim's excellent ektar lut...

nice!

Raw Video / card spanning for video
June 29, 2019, 11:32:30 AM
Has anyone given much thought to doing card spanning on models with dual slots such as my 5d3?
I'm finding that dual iso video, even at 10 bits, is too demanding for shots longer than about 10-20 seconds depending on compressibility of the content.  If card spanning could improve this by any amount, it could be a life saver!

just curious...
#85
I shot a few scenes recently using dual iso for high dynamic range shots, and somehow the footage has a strange intermittent flickering of the colours, as though the gamma and colour temperature are being toggled back and forth.

It's quite pronounced when using mlvapp, and less so if the frames are extracted (without vertical squeezing) and then processed with cr2hdr, although it is still there, and unfortunately that introduces aliasing since it won't accept the squeezed files (from what I am seeing - has this changed?)

ANY help would be greatly appreciated.  This is a showstopper for me.  I'll take noisy shadows over this...

Please help!

thanks

this one turned out really well, at least i think so...

i'm totally loving linear gamma!

https://vimeo.com/314928371
#93
I saw someone on here mention using linear gamma in resolve, so I gave it a shot, and IT ROCKS.

I loaded up a video I did last year when I was first playing with reduced gain, and for the first time, I was able to get things looking right.

This video was not shot to be nice looking.  It was a series of tests of extreme conditions to determine the limits of the camera with reduced gain.  The whole thing was shot using iso 200 dropped to approximately 109.  For example, the only light in the entire video is a single kitchen light bulb in the opening segment which was shot before sunrise.  Extremely harsh and bad lighting in a dim area with just enough cold blue light from outside to make it look really ugly.  And yet, it looks pretty good!

The shot of the paddle in the water was in full sun at noon, directly overhead.  This shot, and the melting icicle, puts to rest any false notion that you can't get good highlights with gain reduction.  You have to expose for it, and the clean shadows means you can lift them way up.

It also means you have to do serious grading to do this while looking natural.  Linear gamma did the trick.  It required a very strong inverse log curve, something you could never get away with in any other situation...

There's NO noise reduction used in any of this footage, including chroma.

After I completed this, I loaded up the same footage in mlvapp and made a similar crazy curve in linear mode, and it looks excellent!

The only thing lacking from mlvapp to prevent me from getting the same results is the lack of curves for "lum vs sat" and "sat vs sat".  Those, plus nodes, and mlvapp is ready for anything...

PS: If gain reduction was used for the "dark" iso in dual iso (e.g. 800), it would be even better with absolutely noise-free shadows.  In testing I have done for the last couple of days, I am finding that for some scenes, iso 109 still wins.  Dual iso always wins for extreme dynamic range scenes, so I will be using both from now on as needed.  It would just be nice to have even cleaner "ultra dark" details with dual iso.

vimeo forced me to convert rgb to rec709 so it's not 100% accurate colour, but it's extremely close.

with mlv app's new capabilities, i tried processing this video using only it!

it handled everything except a couple of shots that needed features (currently?) unavailable on it.

i used hyalinejim's excellent magic lantern ektar LUT that he made intended for resolve.  i simply pointed mlv app to the directory with his .cube files, and used slog3.  it worked beautifully!  try it!

thanks to the iso experiments, the shadows are so clean that no noise reduction was required.

when will this capability be available for everyone?

I really pushed the limits of what I can do with extreme dynamic range using the iso experiments build on my 5D3.
Lots of content in shadow with a harshly lit subject.

No dual iso, no HDR, just ISO 200 dropped to 100.

The opening shot was done at 60fps using the standard crop rec 4k build.  I couldn't get usable results at high frame rates with the iso experiments build.  You'll notice extra noise in the opening shot.

Shot in 3k, downsampled to 1080 for smaller uploading.

Hevc RGB fullrange (0-255)

Download the file to see it properly.

I'm on both sides of the camera, so it's locked tripod shots when I'm in the frame...

I'm not sure if the https rule applies to goggle drive, but I removed the "s" from the link. If there's a problem, put it back in!

edit:  here's the december 2017 version of the iso research modules - use it with the Dec 2017 crop rec build:

Feature Requests / Audio-only proxy?
January 05, 2018, 03:09:25 PM
Since I started tinkering with a1ex's iso experiment, I'm totally hooked.  I never shoot without it!

There's a drawback, however...

In it's current experimental state, it prevents recording camera audio in any of the >1920 zoom modes.  Can't make use of any of the workarounds available.

A thought occurred to me when I saw the message on the camera screen saying that no h.264 proxy recording is available in zoom mode:

Can an "audio-only" proxy be recorded?  Even if it includes totally corrupted video, the audio would be the important part.

Sorry if it's already been requested, it seems like an obvious idea, but a search turned up nothing for me.

Hi everyone...

I've got some interesting footage I shot the other day for a new film I'm creating.  I'm really digging the benefits of dual iso, but sometimes strange things can happen.  In this example, it seems as though the interlacing is alternating in the brightly lit patch of clouds above the sun.

Luckily, I'm shooting each clip in both single and dual iso modes in case of such things, but I want to share this example in case it's unusual enough to hint at something to investigate.

Shot on my 5Diii, firmware 113 using the latest nightly build.

The frames were extracted using the very new build of mlv_dump.

Every combination of ways to play with the frames on my windose machine has been tested, and the shimmering is always there.

It may be quite normal to you, but somehow it seems a little odd to me!

I'd upload the mlv but it's far too large, so this handful of frames should suffice...

Thanks for this incredible enhancement to so many photographer's lives!

Raw Video / Shooting raw monochrome?
November 04, 2017, 09:32:06 PM
Hi all,
I'm curious if there would be any way to set ML to shoot raw video in monochrome, potentially to reduce the amount of data being recorded.
I have no idea if it's possible to do this at the lowest level, and even if so, would it actually reduce the amount of data?
Obviously, I'm interested in shooting monochrome.
Thanks.
