Hi Masc, PERFECT. Just unchecked recommended apps, to ALL apps (MAC SIERRA)... and all MLV's loaded straight into MLV app. Thanks for feedback, really appreciate it. GREAT APP  :)

Hi Masc, i'm on MacOS, i'm currently using the 0.5 alpha version.. the latest version on the download page, just tried finder to select multiple MVLs to import, but when i go to "open with", the MLV app is grey'd out and won't let me select it, to open with, guess i'll wait for the app to be updated, again fantastic work, thanks.

Terrific Progress guy's, amazing work, quick question though.... anyone know how to batch import?? i can only seem to import one clip at a time, or am i missing something???????
#29
Hi Danne, thank's for correcting me once again :), you was indeed referring to 4444 12bit vs 4444XQ 12bit,my bad lol, so does this app spit out 4444 12bit files or 10bit 4444 files?? I always seem to get confused with some magic lantern apps, as some only support 4444 10bit, (or so i've read) get's a little confusing.

Excellent work @masc and @Ilia, superb progress, just ran a lossless file, and exported to prores 4444 really well, quick question though, you say it supports full bit depth, does that mean prores 4444 is exported to 4444 12bit??

Danne kindly pointed out that you really can't see any quality difference between 10bit and 12bit prores files, which for the most part i agree, but i use colour finale within FCPX alot, so every extra (bit) help's,

so i just wanted to know, if the 4444 files are 12bit, or did you just mean the exported prores files are all now 10bit, as previously this app was only producing 8bit 4444 files.

Many thanks.

Hi Danne, yeh i've tried the switch app too, and for whatever reason i couldn't get that to work either,

My goal is not to get CDNG files but to get MLV Lossless compression files transcoded to Prores 4444 as quick and as painless as possible so i can work in FCPX. Cliphouse with MLVFS thus far seems to work best for me.

Having in and out points with batch export and basic colour correction tools is a big deal for me.

Thanks for the links, will have a read up.

Hi guy's

So i've been experimenting with the lossless jpeg compression crop mode for a while, and have been trying to find a simple solution to convert MLV lossless files so i can edit straight in FinalCut. (don't like Da Vinci, can't get MLV dump to work, and Footage app doesn't have batch export)

My solution is to use MLVFS (Massive thanks to whoever updated the app to support Lossless MLVS) to generate the dng's and then import them into a app called Cliphouse from Pomfort.

Cliphouse accepts the dngs generated from MLVFS and has basic colour correction tools, exposure, tint, contrast, colour temp, sharpening etc all the usual stuff, it also has in and out points for trimming your clips and it does have playback, although it is kinda slow, best of all it has batch export and the debayering as far as i can tell is good. Exports to prores 4444

From my tests (Late 2016 MacBook Pro) a 10 second clip with a resolution of (3320 x 1320) exports to prores 4444 in around 1min to 1min 30seconds in the fastest setting, and in terms of quality i can't see any differance between the fastest setting (lowest quality) and the slowest setting (best quality) in export.

Best thing to do is import your dngs - mark your in and out points, colour correct, batch export to prores using the soft gpu option, and grab a coffee or let it do it's thing over night. works great, makes life so much easier.

Hope this helps anyone wishing to convert Lossless MLV files and edit in FCPX the fastest possible way.

Ilia & Masc are doing a great job in building a new MLV mac app, but is still in it's infancy, so looking forward to see how that app progresses, and probably in time will be the best long term solution, Martin hering is releasing his colour grading app soon, so fingers crossed that will work well with MLVFS or the footage app,

PLEASE NOTE, ClipHouse has now been discontinued and is no longer available for purchase, but if you search the interwebs it's not too hard to find. ;)
#33
@Ilia Yes the same thing happens to me, the app GUI closes and terminal opens, i'm currently running macOS Sierra 10.12.5 and using late 2016 MacBook pro.
#34
I always thought Prores 4444 was 10bit lol, must have got confused with proress 422HQ being the 10bit one, oh that's great, no need to even worry about 4444XQ then. Thanks for the correction :)
#35
@jpegmasterjesse Same for me too, i think the code needs to be compiled or something, not sure.

@Ilia gread work dude, looking forward to the new features discussed, batch export with proress 4444 and lossless compression GOLD, :)

Hey i wonder if apple sorted out the problem with exporting to prores 4444XQ, i remember Martin Hering saying that apple's development tools didn't support it, 4444XQ would be amazing (12bit) rather than 4444 (10bit)

Oh and Ilia, as you add new features i'll be happy to test and report any bugs etc, keep up the good work.
i'm so with you on why your making this new app, Magic Lantern has some great post software, but there still isn't a proper native MAC app that does everything, without tedius work arounds, that MLP app looks cool, but not a native mac app and no lossless compression support, and footage app was brilliant but needs batch export and that black level issue is a problem plus,Martin has disapeared off the face of the planet lol, so no updates. MLVFS is a great time saver, but it only spits out CDNG and i find working in da vinci a pain (personal Preferance) i LOVE FCPX,

Hopefully overtime this app will address all these teething problems.

Thanks again for doing this.  :D

Excellent, will be following closely to see how this app develops, looks promising so far.

Do you plan on implementing some code so it can handle MLVS with lossless compression?
#37
Hi Martin,

Again cannot thank you enough for this badass app, is there any chance you could add batch export, that would speed up things considerably, and it's the only big must have feature that is missing, i know you said your app is undergoing a huge re-write, but adding a batch export feature would keep us that use your app all time ticking over until you release your new app.

Ps i would request scopes etc (which is another big deal)  but i'm sure that will be reserved exclusively for your new app. Any updates on how this new app is coming along? Eagerly anticipating it's arrival.

Many thanks

Wayne.

what was you post workflow on this?

Hi nikki, i imported all MLV files into martin herings great mac app called FOOTAGE, corrected colour balance and then applied C Log, exported to prores 4444.

Setup a 4k timeline within FCPX, imported the 3584x1320 MLVs and used Color Finale Pro to add alexa LOG C LUT, from lut utility within color finale, then used the colour wheels and vectors to colour grade.

Exported as a 4K H.264 file and uploaded to youtube as a 4K file.

Tested the 3.5k crop mode 3584x1320 on the lowest compression setting (11-8bit) Lossless, to see how it holds up, pretty pleased with how stable it is, no dropped frames or automatic stoppage's despite shooting some highly detailed scenes, it also preserved excellent colour detail too, fantastic job Alex.

As usual liveview is a challenge to work with, but workable with some extra attention, also there one clip that is standard 1920x804 cuts very well with the crop clips, see if any of you can guess which one it is?

Hi,

So canon just released the C200 Cinema camera to join the cinema EOS line of cameras.
It records cinema raw light files internally.

Canon also have a new PC and MAC plug in for post processing these raw light files,
I'm wondering if it's possible for mlv files to somehow be adjusted or tweaked to allow compatibilty with this new plug in?. (Maybe MLV files within the Cinema raw light container)
Or an option to convert to cinema raw light using existing post processing tools.

•Why would we want to do this?

Well obviously we already have a wealth of great tools available for processing MLV files, each with there own advantages and disadvantages, but my thinking is becuase this plug in is officially made by canon then logically all major editing software and future apps will eventually support this plug in, and or the actual cinema raw light format natively thus allowing us to use our MLV raw files with lots more freedom in editing programs much like how r3d files are supported.

•We dont need this, cdng does this already?

Well canon says the files are much smaller than raw cinema. 1/5th of the size.
So it would be a viable alternative to cdng for file size, archive purposes while preserving all the raw data

What exactly is this new cinema raw light format?

Maybe its not that much different from magic lanterns MLV?

CDNG raviant?

So is this even possible to convert mlvs to tis cinema raw light format? Legal? Is it even worth it?

Just thought i'd ask the questions.

Firstly how did pomfort manage to implement native mlv support with there cliphouse app without violating the open source gpl? They had a free version which shipped with there now discontinued digital bolex camera, and a standalone payed version. (Incidently they stopped selling the app at the end of 2016 becuase of the discontiued digital bolex.

Secondly, martin how about somehow integrating your app as a plug in for fcpx i know for a fact that currently there is no plug-in that supports cdng files natively in fcpx (that would preserve the ONE STEP conversion and not violate the gpl)

many pros who use cdng dont want or need to work in da vinci resolve, but are forced to use it or adobe premier or do the dreaded x2 extra conversion process, because of fcpx lack of cdng support, blackmagic users being a prime example, also prores 4444 by design is 10bit, so cdng support would definetly be a BIG DEAL for magic lantern users who use fcpx (full 14bit support) and also cater to many pros wanting to use cdng within fcpx natively with color finale and not have to do the round trip to da vinci (fast turnaround) so that would also fill for your commercial app needs especially with you having extensive experiance on the mac platform.

Part of what makes your app so great is the whole fact that it reads mlvs natively in a lovely simple GUI, and is fast, so in essence its a one step conversion to proress, which most pros do anyway (h.264, sony xvac, canons motion jpeg etc to PR) fcpx works extremely fast with prores as it's optimised for it,

Honestly that EXTRA cdng conversion then to prores is a (pain in the butt) especially when working on a quick turnaround deadline, time wasted converting, extra file management, hard drive space, (its what puts alot of people off using magic lantern) i for one sacrifice that gorgeous 14bit colour for 10bit magic lantern prores files, just to work in fcpx, and not have to mess around with da vinci, or premier.

Your proposal for this new app with cdng only, well there are apps that already do this to one degree or another, and once converted to the cdng format all the tools are readily available in premiere and da vinci with expanded support, So your app then is only needed pixel removal, verticle line striping and all the magic lantern stuff like daul iso, which is still cool but i dont think it will be enough for people to part with there cash when there are already apps that do it for free, like MLVP (but again not a native mac app, ugly UI windows based lol) being a example and can be used on mac via wine.

Magic lantern's only draw back has always been that fast speedy ONE STEP post workflow, now we have it, it's going to be taken away,

Magic lantern really needs a native professional mac app that has one step conversion like yours currently is,  (it's the holy grail for magic lantern work on mac) THIS IS A REALLY REALLY BIG DEAL, it's your USP, i cannot stress enough on this, this is the single biggest factor in why some people dont use magic lantern, mlvfs came close but just not practicle with fcpx.

So i guess the very thing that makes magic lantern so amazing (open source) is it's ultimate achilles heel on the post production side.

We're just never going to get a one step conversion app with all the bells and whistle's that are needed to become a fast professional workflow becuase of the gpl license thing, it's a shame becuase the images that magic lantern produce are just amazing, and is still better than the recently released gh5, (well in my opinion anyway) think about that for a second a 2012 camera beats the latest 2017 gh5, mind blown.

Magic lantern has become a professional tool for years now, but has always lacked that PRO all in one app, it DESERVES a professional app to take it to the next level.

Finally martin if you decide to go down the route that you have mentioned a tight seamless integration mlv to cdng open source then your standalone app with export to prores working together that would still be a decent solution.

Happy sunday people.

Hi martin,
Tricky subject
Firstly your app has become a integral part of my workflow, and makes MLV files an absolute seamless pleasure and joy to work with on the mac, us mac users who exclusively work with fcpx have a very limited choice of post apps to choose from in terms of ease of use log support and speed,

if anything your app makes me want to use magic lantern even MORE, however it is a kick in the teeth for those who have spent hours and hours for free developing magic lantern.

I would say in my humble opinion either 1, add a donation link, 2 continue to develop the app with one version with all the current and future features for free with publishing some of the sorce code as you touched on, and a second exactly the same but with batch export and some more pro features for a small fee, (that way your adding to the magic lantern community & catering to us pros WHO NEED YOUR APP)

Fact of the matter is us mac users have been crying out for an app just like yours, and im sure as more people know about your app, more people will want to use magic lantern (or start using it again), becuase to my understanding some people love magic lantern but can sometimes find MLV cumbersome to use in post on the mac platform, (workarounds or app no longer developed, or no log support or UI is ugly etc) your app is the all in one app that has all the features for a SERIOUS AND FAST workflow, footage app with fcpx is gold.

Magic lantern deserves a badass app for mac, and that would only open to the door to even more pros using it i hope a solution is found because your app is wonderful. And if a solution is not found WE ALL LOSE OUT.

(Ps i totally understand the whole open sorce under gpl thing, but bottom line is as great as magic lantern is us mac users NEED a equally great post MLV app to work with, and becuase of the GPL thing no app developer has catered to us mac users, or at least a app that has all the features we need for a viable pro workflow, (counter productive thus far) Im happy to pay for it, but i understand thats slap in the face for others have devoted so much time in ML, us Pros need this app.

Martin PLEASE find a soltuion thats suits everyone,

Have a great weekend.

Hi Martin,

Fantastic app, works like magic.

However,  alex has just released a new amazing update with the option to compress the raw data in camera, (60% lossless)  i have tried to view the files in your app, but it crashes everytime.

Alex did say that the windows mlv dump app did need tweeking to be able to decode the MLV file,

Will you be able to update this app so these new MLV files can be read?!

Thanks... Wayne.
#44
INCREDIBLE!!!!! Wonderful job alex, i really appreciate all the hard work you and and the other developers have put in over the years to get magic lantern to where it's at right now.

ULTRA HD RAW 24p on 5d mark iii wooah :) ,so the most obvious question is when will we be able to test out this new update.

Feels like xmas. :)

Alex you are a genius.

Really excited by this find and development and where it could potentially lead.

Motion JPeg, or dng at 50-60% compressed of the original file size and higher resolutions would be just unbelievable... maybe a april 1st announcement :D, fingers crossed.

Massive thank you to the whole magic lantern community for this amazing software and a special thanks to the core developers.

Any news on how things are progressing?
