General Chat / End of Life – Quicktime for Windows
April 24, 2016, 06:22:57 PM
It's official! Quicktime for Windows is no longer supported by Apple. What does this mean for all the filmmakers out there who rely on the ProRes line of codecs?
Security holes in Quicktime for Windows

Nowadays, many cameras are capable of recording to the popular ProRes codec in various flavors. The codec is being used widely throughout the industry due to its robust set of features and its capability of being integrated flawlessly within a wide range of workflows. Every major NLE system can handle the *.mov file containers.

Two weeks ago, the security company Trend Micro published an article in which two major security flaws were uncovered. The article came along with an "urgent call to action" to immediately uninstall QuickTime from Windows machines to maintain data security.

According to Trend Micro, there are two primary reasons for their vigorous statement, first:

Apple is deprecating QuickTime for Microsoft Windows. They will no longer be issuing security updates for the product on the Windows Platform and recommend users uninstall it. Note that this does not apply to QuickTime on Mac OSX.

More importantly:

Second, our Zero Day Initiative has just released two advisories, ZDI-16-241 and ZDI-16-242, detailing two new, critical vulnerabilities affecting QuickTime for Windows. These advisories are being released in accordance with the Zero Day Initiative's Disclosure Policy for when a vendor does not issue a security patch for a disclosed vulnerability. And because Apple is no longer providing security updates for QuickTime on Windows, these vulnerabilities are never going to be patched.

Apple's official statement

And now, Apple have confirmed to the Wall Street Journal that they are not going to support Quicktime for Windows anymore. So what does all this mean for us as filmmakers? Well, it is quite a shock, because as of today you end up having two options as a Windows user:

1) Uninstall Quicktime – the safest option, but you'll end up having no chance to play back or edit ProRes files anymore

2) keep Quicktime – shouldn't be an option. Only do this if you have no alternative or if you are finishing a ProRes project as we speak
Solutions and workarounds

If number one is an option for you, then you should switch to a different codec right away, such as DNxHD or DNxHR. The problem lies in the fact that many modern cameras record to ProRes. Not quite as many are capable of recording to DNxHD/HR. So there should be a swift response from the industry, too. Red, for example, offers a free update for their whole lineup of cameras which unlocks recording to DNxHD/HR.

Adobe did make an announcement on that very issue, too. It is a bit confusing, though. They recommend uninstalling Quicktime for Windows. On the other hand, they also admit that some core functions of their Creative Cloud suite may be affected by doing so. Hopefully, they can come up with some solution very soon.
Conclusion

The seemingly small step for Apple to discontinue Quicktime for Windows could turn out to be a significant leap for the camera and filmmaking industry. Hopefully, the manufacturers will come up with—and provide—some solutions quickly. Red is a good example that others should, and will hopefully, follow.

For now, make sure to run an anti-virus scan on your Windows machine and think twice when handling Quicktime movies on Windows machines!

Please Note: The link to Wall Street Journal points to a subscription based article. However, the first paragraph tells you nearly everything that you need to know.
UPDATE

As you can see, there is a vivid discussion going on in the comments on this matter. It seems that only the Quicktime player for Windows as well as the web components such as browser plugins are affected by these security flaws. NOT the ProRes codec itself. So, it should be safe to work with Quicktime encoded files as long as you solely use the codec (within a NLE), not the player or browser plugin. However, you should be cautious when handling Quicktime files on Windows machines.

Thank you sir, I did. :)

Is there any different mlv_rec and raw.rec? As a bit etc?
Which one is the best way to record 14bit video?

Just open the modules like:

*file_man
*pic_view
*raw_rec

is it enough? and for record sound with external audio recorder?

And is there any differents between firmwares 1.1.3 and 1.2.3? Because I have atamos ninja recorder and on 1.1.3 there is no mirroring HDMI.

thanks a lot

General Help Q&A / Audio failed to stop, state 4
November 07, 2015, 10:23:25 PM
hello everyone..

I ve updated the firmware 1.1.3 to 1.2.3 and installled last build. Everything is fine except audio. After the active the module about sound. It does not work at all. Giving error like Audio failed to stop, state 4.

So do you have any idea how to fix it?
#60
I already checked it out, man.. Little bit confused about which utility has to be used.. Could you tell me step by step for understanding clearly?
#61
Hello guys

I need to learn to use which eos utility version for downgrade.. I have two mark iii and want to install ML to them. And firmwares are 1.3.3 so what I need to do?
#62
:*(
#63
just buy monitor which is recording also :)
#64
up!
#65
Ahh sorry then, let me rephrase..

Many people in this community has experience than me. I have just read many post in there, I have a little experience about ML eventho do not install on my camera. After watched some example movies which recored with ML. I have just bought Canon 5D mark III and bunch of Komputerbay CF card 64GB 1066x.

And I just want you and another people to tell me what they are settings for 1080p - 2K - 4K and timelapse. I will use those settings untill gettin my own settings. If I do something wrong, I am gonna get back to that BACK-UP point. (Those settings)

I will use ML with 5D mark III on DJI Ronin without Monitor right now after that gonna buy Atamos Shogun or ninja blade.
I will fix the audio issue with external recorder.

What I suppose to do for install ML (-need to install JUST last build? - camera firmware is important in that matter - which settings do I need to ON in ML menu for 1080 - 2K - 4K - timelapse.

I just want to record RAW video 1080p 24-25 fps, sometimes slo-mo and 2K & 4K and timelapse.
And if anyone share with their settings, they will light me up till I am lost in ML menu :)

have fun and record awesome, amazing shoots
Cheers

anyone?
#67
Thanks @Walter Schulz
The preset things is tottaly new for me, but I will spent time in that link. I am sure about to gonna find to similir preset that I want to have..

So anyone could give me more basic info like that:
IMAGE QUALITY : RAW
AUTO LIGHTNING OPTIMIZER: OFF
LONG EXP NOISE REDUCTION : OFF
HIGH ISO SPEED : OFF
(its settings of canon menu) I mean..

GLOBAL DRAW : OFF (Loose histogram-zebra etc but, gonna gain speed)
FPS OVERRIDE : 24
RES : 1920*508
CROPMARKS: 2.35.1

for result: 1920x1080p 24fps raw video. like that

For 2K & 4K : you need to do resolution that and stretch or crop(zoom) etc
do it for timelapse etc.

Raw Video / Back up point about ML & 5D Mark III
June 16, 2015, 05:23:23 PM
Hello Everyone..

I have been read and watched lots of post and videos on here and youtube. First of all sending all my respects to Alex and every single member of developer TEAM, you are the BEST so far.

I am the VFX and editting guy but after all this, have decided to shoot my own RAW video that's why I have bought Canon 5D Mark III and bunch of Komputerbay 64GB 1066x CF cards. I am really good in theory after read all kinda of post in here but not in practice. Whenever I want to find out an answer of my questions, all post had been written about 1-2 years ago. So you know there are lots of builty and update comes out and gettin little bit confused while trying to find out an answer.

And I want you all to give me a back up point until I get my own settings of RAW video. Of course I will try to a new settings on ML but If I fucked up, I need to gettin back to first point that you told me. So could you help me out about this subject? Because I couldnt find any tutorial in 2015.

- What is the settings of having 1080p raw video. Cropmarks, res, override etc.
- What is the settigns of having 2k or 4k?
- What is the settings of having timelapse?
- I am trying to fix to audio issue with a external audio recorder.

And I need to install to camera just last built? What am I suppose to do while I decide to install.. Which firmware is cool? 1.1.3 or 1.2.3? If I downgrade or upgrade to firmware on camera, might be big problem for me?

As a final.. I love this community really I do so take care of yourself and have awesome, amazing shoots.
Cheers

Duplicate Questions / Anyone help me out, Please?
April 23, 2015, 01:50:09 PM
Ive just bought new equipment and want to record raw video with magic lantern. I have read and watched lots of things/videos about it but I am not sure understanding truely how I do it. So Could you let me know if I am missing something, step by step..

*Bootable 32GB SD card with Eosutility and copy magic lantern
*Update Canon firmware and install ML
*Adjust the raw settings and choose card 2 for recording raw which is 256GB 1060x
*Never pull out 32GB SD card from camera body? It doesnt work if I do?
*Every Switch On/Off I need to re-install ML?
*After Shooting a footage? May I remove scene that Ive just shooted?
*Open DCIM and drag into raw file to raw2dng and wait till make a squence?
*And how to make it to 2k or 4k videofile?
*Then import After Effects(16bit project file) Add some effects, editting and render it? Quicktime? h264? Cineform? or ProRess with cinec gold?

I have Canon Mark3, using Adobe After Effects and Windows7

I know there are lots of threads about it but didnt catch em all what I want to learn, so please help me out if I missing something

Raw Video / Re: Canon 5d MK III Raw

The 5D3 won't output 14 bit RAW/MLV over the HDMI port unfortunately. It's a limitation of the camera, not the Atomos recorders.

It will output "clean" video over the HDMI port, but it is still in a compressed format. The only way to get full resolution continuous uncompressed RAW/MLV is to record to fast CompactFlash cards. The good news is that Komputerbay sells very fast CF cards for relatively cheap: http://www.amazon.com/Komputerbay-Professional-Compact-Flash-Extreme/dp/B00J9OS4V0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1429550047&sr=8-1&keywords=komputerbay+64gb

I have two of those and they have worked really well so far.

Is it enough for recording raw file? I thought that must be 128gb or 256gb 1060x

Not at all!
RAW is RAW. HDR is HDR (= alternate ISO settings for alternate frames).

Enable RAW_REC.mo or MLV_REC.mo, restart cam and adjust settings. Postprocessing -> Access postprocessing forums.

Thank you for relpying, Ive checked the postprocessing threads but didnt find out what I am looking for..

I truely understand how to install and edit raw videofile in ae? or Am I wrong? :)
1- I need to do bootable 32GB sd card with eosutility and pull into to canon body and update firmware(install magic lantern) right?
2- Then choose card 2 which is 256gb 1060x CF for recording, right?
3- After shooting plug in a cart to windows PC and drag into raw file to any program which is turning a video file, right?
4-Import that video file to After Effects for editing and adding some effects and render it?, right?
any missing steps?

The questions are need to be asked:I am able to remove any scene that Ive just shooted from camera?(card?)
Never pull out 32gb magic lantern sd card from body? if I do, magic lantern doesnt work?
Every switch open/close situation that I need to install it again?
