Raw Video / Re: 30 frames VS 24 Frames.
April 11, 2015, 02:17:27 PM
QuoteI live in PAL world, but do shoot 29.97 because I want to have just a smoother feel, especially for music videos.

That's what I was going to ask; for music video (to be publish on youtube) why choose 30fps over 25fps?

Also, for a music video would you set the shutter speed at 180 degree or lower?

Thanks

When I use Mlrawviewer to convert raw to dngs does it matter what the curve is (S-log etc) or if I set Bilinear or AmaZE or they only account for ProRes transcoding?

Anyway, I think one ca use Resolve lite to edit first and the export to a single intermediate file to do color grading, always in Resolve.

So, you can do everithing with just Mlrawviewer and Resolve Lite (except denoising).

When I config a new project in Resolve I set "Cinema DNG" under the Camera Raw tab as shown here: http://www.davidvickers.co.uk/2014/01/getting-started-with-resolve-video-1.html

If I only deal with ProRes 444 files do you think I should leave ARRI ALEXA under the Camera Raw tab?

Thanks

QuoteFirst the only ProRes you can encoded on Windows7 is ffmeg prores444 which is Only 10bit

I basically transcode raw footage to S-log in an intermediate 4:4:4 video format such as ProRes; I use Mlrawviewer to do this transcoding.

When I play the ProRes footage on VLC Player it says Planar "4:4:4 10 bit YUV". Yet, when I import the ProRes footage into Resolve I get "Apple ProRes 4444 16 Bit Depth" under the metadata tab, why is that?

How about this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BD2AqF_VnY

Did you add noise in Resolve? Was that a plug-in?

My softwares are Mlrawviewer and Resolve Lite on win7. I am considering using Print film emulation LUTs such as Kodak 2383 and Fujifilm 3513 (Constant Luminance Clipping).

I was wondering, why shoud I go thru the Cdng's sequence from RAW instead of just getting a ProRes4444 file (with a S-Log tone curve) to edit and grade with Resolve?

Something like: MLV/Raw-->ProRes4444 + S-Log-->Resolve Luts , Edit , Grade-->h264

What's the point in Cdng's or DNG's?

Thanks

Which one would you suggest?

RAW -> (MlRawViewer) DNGs -> (Lightroom, Color C.) TIFFs -> (Quicktime) ProRes 444 -> DaVinci Resolve (Editing) -> ProRes 422

Or

Raw -> (MlRawViewer) ProRes444 with S-Log Curve -> DaVinci Resolve (Editing + LUT) -> ProRes 422

Mlrawviewer does not seem to play DNG or TIFF sequences made from Lightroom, how is that? The TIFF sequence will play as totally black.
#34
I export DNGs to TIFFs thru Lightroom in order to apply some noise reduction (I can't denoise in Resolve Lite). While in Lightroom, I also bring down contrast (-70) and saturation (-20) in order to make it look like a cinestyle log contrast curve. Finally, I add some (masked) sharpness and export to 16 bit Prophoto TIFF. I just wanted to play this sequences in mlrawviewer and see how it would look like in the Cinestyle lut.

So basically mlrawviewer and raw2dng do the same jobs. Yet, mlrawviewer gives me M29-0307_DNG_000001 folder name style and M29-0307_000001 file name style which I absolutely prefer!

Thanks

How can I import S-curve_for_CineStyle.lut? Do I have to convert it to a .CUBE file? If so, how do I go about it?

Thanks

Hi,

I have RAW files named like this: M29-0249. When I drag and drop it onto raw2dng I get files like 00001.dng and so on. Is there a way to have the dng files named something like M23-0249-00001? It would make my life a lot easier if I did not have to go thru creating folders named like the raw files containing those dng sequences.

Thanks

Raw Video / Re: Calculate lens crop on Raw
March 29, 2015, 09:36:39 AM
I am sorry, I was wrong in mentioning the 40mm focal lenght  :-[

My goal is to be able to have a 21-31mm zoom by using only a 21mm prime on the 5d2.

Aspect ration is 2.35:1 So, based on your calculation:

at 1856 (x1,00) the equivalent lenght stays the same (21mm),
at 1536 (x1.21) the equivalent lenght is ~25mm,
at 1280 (x1.45) the equivalent lenght is ~31mm.

I will then upscale to a fixed resolution (1920) in DaVinci Resolve.

Should I need longer focal lenght then 31mm I will change lens and apply the same math :)

Thanks

Raw Video / Re: Calculate lens crop on Raw

Thanks. I think on the 5d2 that should be 5616 / the long side eg 1280. Yet, I am not shooting in crop mode just normal mode. Does that mean I have do something like 5616 / 3 and then divede that by 1280?

I have noticed on the 5d2 the only resolution that covers the liveview is 1792x(...) should U use this number as a reference?

Raw Video / Calculate lens crop on Raw
March 29, 2015, 12:34:49 AM
Hi,

I have a 40mm f/2.8 on the 5D2 I'd love to figure out a way to calculate the crop factor when I am shooting at 2.35:1 at different resolution: 1280x544, 1536x654 and 1792x762. I understand the higher the resolution the wider the field of view. Yet, I need to calculate how wide is it on the 40mm lens (45mm, 50mm?).

Thanks

Hi,

I can't seem to able to set the shutter speed at 1/50 when I select 5x crop mode. If I set the camera to 1/80 I'll see 1/54.89 (164°), the at 1/50 on camera it'll show 1/37.91 (237°) on Magic Lantern. Originally, I also had difficulties setting the correct frame rates as it would go from 25 in liveview mode to 29.97 in 5x crop mode.  I worked that out by setting 25.000 on FPS override (Exact FPS). I am shooting at 1280x720 and although ML says the speed will be at about 38.4 MB/s the actual speed is around 51 MB/s when I hit the record button, why is that?

Thanks
