I know you mentioned lighting but believe me, you have to do more than buy expensive lights. You have to pay for people to help you light. Lighting is one of (if not THE one and only) the most critical aspects of filming. Highlight rolloff is probably the second thing that is noticeable on high quality productions - hence the use of RED, ARRI and BM.

I worked as a lighting tech once for a more sophisticated production and know what you mean. But it's not what I'm talking about. There is some subtle difference between the cameras I can't explain. :D

Regarding the highlight roll-off, I think that ML RAW does quite a good job. I always do manual ETTR with RAW-Zebras and expose just 1-2 stops before clipping. So you still have detail in the highlights. (There is more information in brighter areas [less noise], and if you need to darken, you are going to edit it anyway.)

General Chat / Let's talk real about cinema-look…
July 21, 2016, 01:28:45 AM
Hey there,

so even if you use all the film-look techniques, 24fps, 1/48 shutter, shallow depth of field, stabilize camera movement, light up professionally, cinemascope aspect ratio, have good actors, color grade perfectly and do the framing and everything else right. I have the feeling that with Magic Lantern RAW or even a Blackmagic you still can't get footage to look like it would be from a high budget film production or could be shown as a movie in movie theatres. Is there anything else, that could be done or I forgot?

At this point I am at the end of my knowledge and can't explain what a Red Epic or a Arri Alexa does differently. I guess it has something to do with how their sensors do interprets motion, I can feel it, but I can't explain why it looks so differently. At least I didn't see any video from ML/BM close enough, that I wouldn't spot the difference to a DSLR. Any link to clips to prove me wrong would be awesome.

Thanks in advance.

yeah I did.

I remember having normal long MLVs back in the day, but since a couple of months they get broken easily.

Hey guys, first of all, great job with the pink frames issue. My using of MLV raw is increasing every day and I'm really happy to shoot :)

One issue though. During the last couple of shoots I'm finding all my longer clips of some minutes are broken on the card. MLV play module is not playing it, it shows indexing 10/10 but doesn't do anything and the files on the card are M04-1615.MLV aswell as M04-1615.M00-M08 are only a few bytes big. It is perticurarly unfortunate, because the longer clips were the most important ones. Does anybody has the same problems? 5DmkIII, Nightly.2016May16.5D3113

my card is formatted with the camera and exfat feature is not activated.
reserve card space is ON

I'm talking about the mlv_rec module inside the camera.
It writes files with this naming scheme: e.g. M17-1329.MLV But in my opinion it would be better: 2016-06-17-1329.MLV if you shoot a project over several months :)
#31
MLV filename with 'MYYYY-MM-DD-' instead of only 'MDD-'?
Is it possible or does the longer filename make a problem?

It would make more sense while shooting over a longer period of time.

Thank's in advance!

Sorry to read that.
Search gives 9 matches, however.

Oh, maybe I didn't search it right. I looked at downloads->chose 5d3-113-> looked at older builds after 04-10->changesets and looked trough "files changed". Where did you find it?

According to link this one was merged into main (= nightly build) April, 10th. All builds since contain it.

I checked all nightly updates after this date but couldn't find any mlv_rec changes in the changeset informations :)

Right, this one only works on current nightlies. It's for 1.1.3, and gives hack error on 1.2.3 (with a small performance penalty as well).

Yay! Commited the change and included it (among with some other minor fixes) in this pull request:

https://bitbucket.org/hudson/magic-lantern/pull-requests/698/raw-recording-fixes-both-raw-and-mlv/diff

I would like to test the modified mlv_rec.mo too, but your dropbox link doesn't work anymore. Or is it already in the nightly builds (could not find it in the changeset informations)?

Another question: Is it normal, that Global Draw doesnt work in 60fps-mode when a external monitor is plugged in? 5D3113

Apparently it works only in forced 480p output.

The solution with previewing MLV's with MlRawViewer trough MLVFS was promising at first, but turned out to have problems.

Problem 1: With MlRawViewer before even my older macs could preview in realtime. Since you have to go around with MLVFS it doubles the CPU workload and unfortunately the cpu is not enough. It is still kinda possible, but I get stutter.

Problem 2: MlRawViewer creates its own files during first playback. When using MLVFS these files somehow are incompatible with the Smart Import 2 AE workflow, so you have to erase all MlRawViewer files first and if you want to preview MLV's with MlRawViewer again, you have to think of erasing them afterwards too.

About DR12: Also way too heavy for my old mac.

I just realised that Global Draw is disabled in 60fps mode when a ext. Monitor is plugged in via HDMI, was it always like that and I missed this fact? Thanks in advance!!

Thank's guys, the grading was a combination of LUT's, also film noise was used - which apparently didn't end well for youtube. :)

What we did is recording the sound first, then time-strech it up to 62,5%. Then if filmed with playback at 40FPS (fastest possible for the singer :) ) and slow it down in post to 25FPS it would still be in slow motion, but the lips are synced. 5Dm3, MLV-Lite(+Focus Peak,RAW Zebras). Hand- held and focused.

I would be happy to hear some constructive feedback from you guys!

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO MAKE THIS AWFUL YOUTUBE QUALITY BETTER? (Besides Vimeo)

That is an truly awesome advice! Didn't know MlRawViewer can open up a cDNG sequence. Thank you Danne!  :)

It's not a lot of footage (120gb of mlv), but just a slower macbook - 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB. It is still usable for all work though, even cutting with proxies (CameraRaw workflow).

EDIT: About the corrupt MLV. MlRawViewer shows it black too, it's really weird, that OSX Preview shows it correctly.

Thanks. Seems corrupted. Preview seems fine though. Only one bad fram out of 174 mlv files shot in 50fps? That seems to me like mlv_lite is a trustworthy format.

It's all frames in the whole MLV. But one MLV out of 174. So not a corrupted frame - since the preview works fine I guess there is a way somehow to fix it.

Otherwise though mlv lite is extremly stable. I didn't have one corrupt frame (only this MLV) even with using focus peak in 50fps! The one and only reason left for me not to use it is the realtime previewing option. It doesn't work in MlRawViewer and now I had to export proxies which tooke about 50 hours to render just to preview and be able to choose the actual footage i am going to use for the cut - you cannot decently preview on the set and know only after days if you fucked something up maybe :)

Corrupt frame? Do you have the actual mlv file or a sample dng?

It is one mlv of 174 recorded (didn't change any settings in the recording series) and all of the cDNG's in this perticular mlv. Finder preview works fine.

Here to download, thanks (MLFVS same as MLP): https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/24873307/M13-1536_000470.dng

Little problem over here, one of the 174 mlv´s lite  I´ve shot is previewing fine in OSX Finder, but when I open it in CameraRAW to debay its black. Tried MLVFS and MLP. Any fix for that? :) Thank ya´ll in advance.

MLV Preview module is working fine on the camera. My Mac is too slow to preview in after effects (not to mention resolve) but was always previewing in realtime in MlRawViewer. Unfortunately MlRawViewer shows only a black screen if I try a MLV Lite.

Good news is: I just had a weekend shooting 120GB of MLV Lite and not a single pink frame with 1920x490 @ 50fps Global Draw ON with cropmarks and freakin' FOCUS PEAK  :o I'm so astonished, it was nice to be able to focus pull easily in slow motion which was impossible with normal MLV without getting pink frames.

My workflow normally was: previewing the MLV's with MlRawViewer and pick the ones I want to open with MLVFS for further processing (MLFVS is the Reason I like MLV instead of RAW, for space saving workflow without having to export to cDNG first). I'm using 5DIII OSX 10.11.3 MlRawViewer 1.4.3.

Hey fellas :) Is there any good way to preview MLV-Lite in realtime, like it works for normal MLV's with MlRawViewer? I'm not very up to date - neither is my 2008'Macbook :D
#48
Thanks. Yes, that's how it went with the Aputure VS-2 FineHD too.
You say there is a delay of 3 Frames: Do you feel/see the delay?  The latency of the Aputure was unfortunately too big, especially if you want to follow focus.

Sony CLM-V55 and his copy Viltrox DC-50 has delay 4 frames from 24fps.
I measured it by the videos on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzBTePxbLfo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTYg2qBt1Sg

My monitor Lilliput 5D-II has delay 3 frames from 25fps (Canon 5d2 with ML: RAW recording).

domasa, can you please tell me, if any of the ML-DIGIC peaking mode work on the Lilliput? Thank you in advance :)

Hello,

just wanted to tell you about my experiences with the new VS-2 FineHD (about 340€ inc. shipping) and Magic Lantern. I ordered it because it has FullHD and also focus Peaking to relieve some CPU off the 5D. The monitor's quality itself is very good. Very light and good looking. I hooked it up with the 5DmkIII on the February-1.1.3 nightly. Global Draw layers work, DIGIC Peaking doesn't. The HDMI-Out resolution is not full HD but has black bars which is still OK-ish but I noticed a slightly higher latency in comparison with the internal monitor.

Updated to 1.2.3 and tried it out with both, mirroring mode and clean HDMI out. Now we're talking. The Full HDMI on the 7inch Monitor (high PixelPerInch) looks really good. But unfortunately the latency is still there. It is actually short about half of a second but it is enough to confuse you while moving the camera and especially focus pulling. Not usable for me.

1 · Is latency a general problem with the Canon HDMI-out or does it have something to do with the Vs-2? I never had the chance to try out a more sophisticated monitor. Do you experience it with other monitors too?

2 · btw, I also had the impression that the internal monitor became slower too in 1920-mode after the update to 1.2.3, is this a thing?

3 · Does DIGIC- Peaking works on other monitors or generally only in the internal one? I could imagine to use a cheaper SD monitor with sharpness+7 and DIgic Peaking Slightly sharper. This is almost as good, as a focus peaker:
