Hey summervibes,

I had the Error 20 issue with my Canon T3i when using the VAF-TXI. It was resolved when I got the shutter replaced by Canon. It cost $250, in 2015. My recommendation is get an estimate from this place in New York: https://phototech.com/digital-slr-camera-repair/

Apparently it is cheaper to get a shutter replacement.

I love shooting with VAF filters, they really do help remove aliasing and moire.

General Help Q&A / Re: flash tweaks, not working on T3i
September 06, 2017, 01:33:01 AM
Hey MarkMcCombs,

I'm not sure if this is remotely close to the solution, but do you by any chance have a hot shoe protector and are using the flash separately? I remember on the T3i the flash settings act odd when there is a protector on top, and it's possible it could be affecting these features. Sorry if this is not close to the right answer, but it's all I have, so I figured I would share. I hope this helps.

Hey davilucho,

This problem has been going on for a couple years. I had the same issue in 2015. Can you try importing the project into After Effects? Davinci Resolve can export a Premiere Pro XML (14 Beta Version), but I don't think that would solve what you are trying to do. I think if you import you project into After Effects, do the VFX, it will automatically update in Premiere Pro. I could be wrong, but it's worth a try right? I hope this helps, and if you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to ask.

Hello domo94,

Thanks so much for your kind words! I appreciate it. I usually try to use the latest nightly build. There are so many improvements being made, and they can be read in the changelog  under the build. I still love this camera, and the VAF filter really does help. Would you like me to post the settings I use? Would that be helpful? I

One other note: I use Cinelog-C for Adobe Camera Raw in After Effects and the Smart Import 2 Script. You have the same flexibility as raw as transcoding to ProRes 4444 XQ.

I haven't gotten into dark frame subtraction yet, but want to soon as that will be very beneficial for low light shooting. Neat Video does a great job though, especially with the Mix with original percentage option. Magic Lantern raw video has a filmic grain to it, so this option is awesome.

I'm willing to post some settings just let me know.

Neat video has an option to use a percentage of the original footage noise and Neat Video's noise reduction. It's called Mix with Original. Raw video from Canon DSLRs have filmic grain, so I really like this method. I do noise reduction at the end in Premiere Pro with ProRes 4444 XQ transcoded clips with Cinelog-C.

I just recently discovered this on my 7D playing back 1728 x 734 (I believe - it was 2:1 aspect ratio) at 29.97 with Exact fps override. I was using a monitor, and had Global Draw on when recording. Canon Preview and Force HDMI-VGA to have smooth recording. I was still able to playback the footage, but the error makes the playback menu options glitch. I had to restart the camera to playback, and the glitching was still there. I also had mlv_rec, mlv_play, and mlv_sound all enabled.

Hey bpv5P,

I'm simply giving my suggestions to favvomannen. Your workflow might be different. I personally find it easier to edit (I can still bring back highlights like raw CDNG) a log profile (Cinelog-C is what I use) in a friendly codec. GoPro Cineform RGBA 12 Bit in After Effects will work great for favvomannen. And I've read online working in 32 bit float is beneficial vs 16 bit. Again everyone has their own workflow.

- Paul

Hey favvomannen,

I would recommend for future projects working in After Effects in 32 bit float. I think you will really like the workflow of GoPro Cineform in Cinelog-C. It's friendly to edit with, you can pull back highlights, and Adobe works well with it. I hope this helps you out, and please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hello favvomannen,

I recommend transcoding with Cinelog-C to GoPro Cineform 12 bit before editing in a timeline. That way when the finsl project is exported to mp4 there is less degredstionnin quality.

Hello bpv5P,

I've used MLVProducer to extract Cinema DNGs (no compression) for one project. It was good, and I still recommend taking Cinema DNGs from MLVProducer and bringing into Adobe Camera Raw through After Effects. Andy600 gave you an explanation about Cinelog-C. I am glad I purchased it, and have no regrets.

Raw Video / Re: best format to publish raw video?

Hey favvomannen,

Are you on Mac or Windows? I recommend extracting your DNGs (Cinema DNG Lossless is best) and bring into After Effects. Use the Smart Import 2 Script for After Effects (found here on the forum), and this will load all of your clips and sync the audio files. I recommend converting to a flat profile in Adobe Camera Raw (Cinelog-C is the best I've used - you can purchase online for $50), and convert all the sequences into ProRes 4444 XQ with Alpha if on Mac, or GoPro Cineform RGBA 12 Bit if on Windows. Then grade and edit in Premiere Pro. This is called transcoding, and will be easier to edit on your computer and solves a lot of headaches with Adobe dynamic link. I hope this helps, and please let me know if you have any questions.

Hello everyone,

I forgot to mention one thing with the successful 29.97 raw video recording with a monitor:

I plugged my monitor into my 7D. I turned my monitor on first, let everything load. Then I turned the 7D on. Not sure if this also takes into account, but I figured I would mention it.

Hello everyone,

After some more trial and error, as well as research online, I think I've found the solution. One of Reddeercity.tv's videos, he mentioned exact fps when using frames per second override. So I tested 30fps with exact fps and didn't get tearing, but still got a lag. So I tried exact fps at 29.97, which H.264 records to, and there is no tearing or lagging! Also, I have Force HDMI-VGA turned on. I have the focus button illuminated on my MustHD Monitor, as well as the HDMI button, and I also have the Camera button illuminated. What this means is even though Magic Lantern is forcing VGA over HDMI, the monitor is scaling this so the entire image is shown on the monitor. I don't mind the loss in resolution since I'm shooting at 7mm and everything is mostly in focus. This is mainly for seeing what I'm filming since there is no flip out screen on the 7D. This is such a relief! I will be doing more testing, since I really want to shoot raw video at 30 fps, and I want to make sure I have all the right settings. So I will report back what I find out, as well as the results when I get some footage. Below are the exact settings I used to figure out how to have no lag or tearing in case you have a 7D and are running into issues:

Hello everyone,

I'm preparing to shoot skateboarding videos with my Canon 7D and Vivitar 7mm f3.5 fisheye, and would like to use raw video at 30 fps. The issue is I need to use an external monitor to see what I am filming since the camera will be low to the ground (there is no flip out screen). When I review the test recordings, my camera glitches/tears when using an external monitor. I've researched on the forum and have tried numerous things, but haven't been able to solve this issue. I haven't had this issue with 23.976 fps in the past, but would like to use 30 fps with a high shutter to slow down the skateboarding action/tricks. I plan on using Twixtor to really slow down the tricks. I would use 48 fps at 2:1, but there is a lot more aliasing and moire, and the VAF-7D Anti Aliasing and Moire Filter doesn't work with this lens (won't focus) because of the flange distance and how wide the lens is. The aliasing and moire is totally reduced in that setting anyway since it's more designed for 1080p. I'm guessing the 5D Mark III doesn't have this issue, and I plan on purchasing one when I can. But in the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions? Are there any settings you use which solve this problem? I've read about Edmac being a solution, and don't quite understand it. I installed the August 1st build, which has Edmac in the changelog, but I haven't had any success. By the way I'm using a 7 inch MustHD Monitor, the M701H. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hey sigurdneby,

I really enjoyed this film. The way it was shot, the film grain and colors, and music really tied an interesting perception of Lofoten Islands. I found this very inspiring for my raw video projects. Thank you for sharing this, and keep up the awesome work!

Hey reddeercity,

Ok I understand. Thanks for testing this. It's odd, I can pick Tokina, 11-16mm f2.8 DX II for Canon, but nothing happens when I choose it, or move the disortion and vignetting sliders. I'm using the most recent version of Adobe CC.

Ok great, thank you so much! I'll make sure to try this out. Have you by any chance experienced lens profile correction issues in Adobe Camera Raw on PC?

Paul, you need to open the MLV file, go to the "output" panel, choose DNG and click "render task".
I would suggest you use CinemaDNG instead. It's basically the DNG's into a single file, it will open on after effects (camera raw) the same way, but will save you some size (lossless compression) and is easier to organize (don't need folders with loads of DNG's in them).

This worked great thank you! Is there any way to do a batch render? I had to choose each MLV file for the Cinema DNGs to render.

Also, I cannot make any lens corrections in Adobe Camera Raw with these Cinema DNGs (or the DNGs I exported with MLV Dump). On Mac, this wasn't an issue. But on Windows, I cannot even use the sliders manually. CR2 Files work fine, no problems. I went to the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 DX II lcp file and placed it under my user name in Camera Raw, Lens Profiles, to still no avail. I even edited the file, changing the word "True" to False" for the entire file. Restarted the computer, still nothing. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. I don't think Adobe will help me because Cinema DNGs don't directly come from the Canon DSLR, but from software.

QuoteHi @Paul

3rd party profiles like Cinelog-C need to go into a User directory not the main Adobe profiles directory (this avoids non-native profiles being systematically deleted when upgrading Adobe Camera Raw versions).

For Windows the install path is typically

C:\Users\(Your user name)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles

Thanks Andy! This worked perfectly.

Hello Magic Lantern Community,

Relating to my above post, I forgot to mention that Cinelog-C was the only profile not recognized. Adobe Standard, Landscape, etc as well as Embedded were there. Camera Raw even said Canon 7D. I placed the Cinelog-C_DCP_2017_for_ACR folder in Camera Profiles under Adobe Camera Raw and no luck.

Hello Magic Lantern Community,

I recently converted from Mac to PC, and am using Windows 10. I cannot seem to figure out how to export dngs out of MLVProducer. I personally like taking DNGs and putting them in After Effects to transcode with Cinelog-C. I had to use mlv dump which took a really long time. I couldn't figure out how to batch export. Is there a batch export to dngs option in MLVProducer? I'm new to PC, and couldn't get MLVFS to work, and I tried for hours. Please, if anyone can help me, I would be really appreciative. Thanks.

Hello Magic Lantern Community,

I've recently converted from Mac to PC, and cannot seem to get Cinelog-C to show in Adobe Camera Raw with DNGs. I used mlv dump, and even tested MLVRawviewer to no avail. I'm using Windows 10, 2017 version of Cinelog-C, and the most recent versions of Adobe Photoshop and After Effects. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Magic Lantern Community,

Yesterday I searched on the forum for hours and tried multiple things to get MLVFS to work on my new PC. The operating system is Windows 10. I would like to generate dngs quickly to transcode in AE to a friendly codec. I tried using MLVProducer, but couldn't figure out how to just get dngs out of the application, and I think MLVFS might be faster. So today I deleted the installations I tried for MLVFS and am starting fresh. I am also new with Windows, coming from Mac. Is there any way someone could walk me through getting MLVFS to work on pc in Windows 10? I would really appreciate any help since I'm really lost at this point on how to get it to work. Thank you.
