Raw Video / DNG Embedded - 600D
September 27, 2016, 06:29:32 AM
Hello everyone,

I have some older Magic Lantern Raw Video from my T3i from 2015.

When I open the dngs (from MLVFS) to Adobe Camera Raw, the Camera Profile says Embedded.

I'm trying to use Cinelog-C, and have tried moving the DCP file around in my Mac Library, but haven't been able to get the dng to recognize the profile.

Unfortunately, the MLV_REC file is no longer in the folder of .MLVs. I must've deleted it, which was obviously a mistake.

I read on an older post there is a way to add info to the dng via Exiftool.

Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with Exiftool, and was hoping someone could try this out on a dng and .MLV file I've uploaded via Google Drive.

If it works, instructions on how to fix all embedded .MLV files would be great.

I realize this is a pain, and I apologize in advance.

I'm not sure what else to do except post to the forum for some help.

I've tried MLVFS, MLRawviewer, Adobe DNG Converter, each program I still receive a dng with Embedded profile.

Here is a link via Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0Bz5n0qYxIkVOclZJOHREZ3g0N2M?usp=sharing

     Thank you.

Hello everyone,

Has anyone tested MLVFS on Mac OS Sierra? I haven't upgraded yet, and don't want to unless I know it works. Thanks.

Camera-specific Development / Re: Canon 7D

Quote1728x692 48 fps slow mo. But wait a minute... When I play it back, the footage is normal aspect, no stretching required! I'm kinda running on no sleep in 2 days, I need someone to confirm this ASAP. I noticed when I set the cam to 1280x720 60p, and set the fps override to 23.976 exact fps, the liveview display was stretched vertically, so when recording it and playing it back records it in normal aspect! Timer A under 23.976 exact is 422 (FT -76). So I set the fps to 48, and Timer A back to 422. Mlv settings-
1728x692
3:2
GD Off
Canon preview
256 MB warmup
SRM On
Hacks on
4 buffers
Reserve on
Global Draw off
Expo override on

Rokinon 35mm manual cine lens

After messing with it a little bit more, the black and white levels get all wacky sometimes and the exposure is super glitchy. At first, I noticed this while testing out different settings in 640x480 mode, going to do some more tests soon as I charge my battery.

:edit: Yeah definitely a bug in the fps override control. I just downloaded the latest nightly, same thing. How exactly does fps override cause LV to stretch? Or is this a new feature I completely missed?!

:edit2: Ok, just figured out that this bug has been in the nightly since 7d fps override was implemented.

:edit3: To fix this issue, Timer A needs to be set to 498 (FT +76) for 23.976 exact and 440 (FT +10) for 60 exact.

I have confirmed this works! Thank you so much N/A!

I have provided a Google Drive Link to a folder with screenshots, pictures, and videos showing the beauty of this:

     https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0Bz5n0qYxIkVOMnJMeWhkU3pMVjQ?usp=sharing

The videos are of my cat in my room, handheld at 50mm. Sorry for the shakiness, I just wanted to test this out with the time I had. I was able to record for 15 seconds.

If anyone has any questions, or can't get to the link please let me know. Thank you to all the Magic Lantern Developers, this is truly awesome!

General Help Q&A / Re: Buy a 7d? slow motion?
September 03, 2016, 08:41:11 AM
Hey VMS-studio,

This is great information, thank you. Unfortunately The Foundry's Kronos plugin for AE is no longer available, since September 2015. This is a bummer because it seems it works well with Cuda. I currently use Twixtor, which is great. I find Twixtor works well for 60 fps footage. It is possible to shoot 60 fps Raw Video with the 7D, and I think it looks pretty good. I have the iPhone 6S Plus. Great camera, but I still am in love with the 7D and it's extended capabilities thanks to the Magic Lantern team. There is a way to attach Canon lenses to iPhones, but there is a sacrifice in quality unfortunately. The 6S Plus has in body image stabilization which is a nice plus.

Hey rsmith02,

Sorry for the late response. Thanks for those last few comments. I've used the 32 GB Sandisk Extreme Pro SD Cards with the T3i and have had no problems. Question. Do you use a battery grip? Someone else on the forum had a corruption issue with a 64 GB card and was using a Meike battery grip. I'm using a Canon battery grip, so it's not third party related, but I'm wondering if that might be the issue. Which I would think it would help with heating the camera, but maybe not as far as 64 GB cards go. I also wonder if 128 GB cards work, if it's any card over 32 GB. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks.

QuoteIm doing Classical Music Videos with 3-4 600D's. I use a battery grip and flip out the screen and they run for many hours without ever shutting down for years now, even outside in the hot sun.

I can confirm as well that when using the T3i in the sun it doesn't shut down and keeps recording fine. I usually offset a T3i and 7D by a few seconds with Auto Restart and this seems to resolve the 30 minute limit. However, it depends on the shoot if this is relevant to people. For some reason on the 7D Auto Restart won't stop when I stop the record button. It's really odd, and made me scared because I had to shut down my camera mid recording. So I just use this option when needed. I hope this helps.

QuoteRecently had the same "Card cannot be accessed. Reinsert/change the card or format card with camera" message on my 650D (with Meike battery grip) twice.
Both times the camera was switched on and several photos had been taken already.
The SD card was a SanDisk 64 GB Extreme (90 MB/s) class 3.
On site there was nothing I could do. So I removed and locked the card, and replaced it with a 32 GB card without ML.

First time I could recover all photos with Recuva from Pirisoft (https://www.piriform.com/recuva). This is freeware.
After this I formatted the SD card with SD Card Formatter (https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/index.html). This little freeware program will restore the hidden partition on the SD card also in case it's lost.
Than I added ML to the SD card again.

Two weeks later it happened again. Same SD card.
This time I wasn't able to recover my photos, but a quick format first did the trick.
After this I could recover all photos with Recuva again.

Since the second 'crash' I haven't use ML anymore and use the 32 GB card only.
I'm still not sure what caused the error, but both times the card was in the camera, camera switched on and in use.

Hey McDonald,

I had a similar problem a couple months ago. The key is to not use an SD card above 32 GB.

I had spent hours recovering the video files, that ended up being corrupted. I was able to use a software to repair the video clips, but this was a pain to figure out, however I was really thankful.

I've had a couple times where a 64 GB SD card has been corrupted with the T3i, and through another post found out 64 GB cards do not work well with the T3i and Auto Restart.

I realize you're using a T4i, but it might be related. Also, I used a battery grip. I'm wondering if a battery grip is the issue. Mine is Canon, yours is Meike, so it isn't a third party issue. I wonder if using external power like a V Mount instead of a battery grip would solve this. As rsmith02 stated in the other post, it might not even be Magic Lantern related. Anyways I just use 32 GB cards now. I hope this helps.

Here is a link to the other post about the same issue: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=17271.msg167353#msg167353

If I can be of any other help please let me know. Thanks.

Hey rsmith02,

I'm glad you found a workaround for your T3i and VAF-TXI. I didn't try those options, but I did notice the Err 20 (I think you have Err 30) got worse and worse and I simply couldn't take it anymore. Did you try calling Mosaic Engineering? They might be able to troubleshoot with you. Worth a try.

Hey beauchampy,

I have tried to use cinema dngs in Premiere Pro as well, and it was a nightmare. I believe it's because they are 14 bit, and Premiere Pro supports up to 10 bit I believe. It is better to transcode to ProRes 4444 XQ using After Effects and Cinelog profiles via Adobe Camera Raw. I definitely need to learn Resolve, will make sure to do so in the future. This makes me excited to learn to round trip! I love Neat Video, and that's great you use it in DaVinci Resolve. Have you ever used the denoiser in DaVinci Resolve; no third party plugin? I was wondering how the denoiser in Resolve is, have heard a few good things about it. Thanks for your reply by the way, much appreciated.

General Help Q&A / Re: Buy a 7d? slow motion?
August 30, 2016, 01:26:05 AM
Hey _OLLE_,

I apologize for misinforming you and everyone else about flat picture profiles reducing moire and aliasing. I had seen this in a video (don't remember which one it was off the top of my head), and thought it was true based on experience, but I must be wrong as stated here.

The VAF-7D and VAF-TXI are great though.

When shooting raw video I did get some aliasing on a small video I made with a friend. If you would like to see the aliasing for comparison even with the filter,  here is the link: https://vimeo.com/171036895

I did use fps override for a couple shots which resulted in greater aliasing.

Although I still need to do more testing, 60 fps on the 7D looks nice. It does suffer from moire, but when I upload some shots in the future I can show how the VAF-7D did with 720p even with moire issues. I haven't processed the video yet.

There is one shot of a water sprinkler in a pond in the video I linked. This was 3x crop mode with the VAF-7D at 60 fps (I don't remember the resolution). Make sure not to do that. The quality suffers terribly.

I plan to use Twixtor with 60 fps ML Raw when I edit it. I know some people don't like the 7D with 60 fps, but maybe the software will improve it after editing.

I hope this helps, and again, sorry for misinforming you. I read that you were disappointed with the 7D. I feel bad you are, sorry if I let you down.

    I hope this helps you.

Hey sgofferj,

I purchased the BMDFilm Adobe Camera Raw Profile by Visioncolor for After Effects and things didn't add up with the 7D. I tried contacting them and they never got back to me. Visionlog is free, and I like to use it with SmartImport2 and transcodingDNGS to ProRes 4444 XQ MOV files. There really isn't a loss in quality, and you can use the Visionlog to REC 709 LUT which brings back all the color. Better yet, you can just many LUTS since the files are flat. I've read Cinelog is good too, $50, but I've had some great results with this workflow. DNG sequences in Premiere Pro is a nightmare, I don't suggest it unless you want to try proxies which are a bit complicated. I hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hey beauchampy,

I really enjoyed watching your video. Amazing detail, and makes me so psyched to be using a 7D for raw video. Great colors and use of Filmconvert as well. Quick question: Do you find a major difference between DaVinci Resolve and Premiere Pro CC 2015/After Effects CC 2015 for color grading? I imagine this question must get asked a lot, however I'm curious about what your opinion is. Personally, round tripping from Adobe to Resolve I've read and heard can be a pain, but if there's a significant difference it may be worth it. The skin tones were really good in this video by the way. Oh, one more question: Did you Denoise in DaVinci Resolve or use Neat Video or some kind of denoise software? It looks like controlled lighting so I wasn't sure if you did or not. Thanks.

I'm a bit late to this forum posting, but I use a MustHD 7 inch monitor. Very accurate colors, has HDMI lock, HDMI in and out, and works flawlessly with my 7D. There are HDMI options in the 7D ML Menu, I believe I use 16:10 HDMI.

When I hit the start stop button it records, but when I hit stop it keeps recording. I'll have to experiment with the double tap method :)

Hey rsmith02,

I'm not sure. I've had it happen with that mode enabled before as well. But I do have to say, they have all been on 64 gb cards! Sandisk is sending 2 32GB cards instead of one 64 GB. Thanks for the advice. Is Chk-back pc only? On a Mac here.

Hey pedrotyler,

This is occuring with my 7D as well. Have always had this issue with ML installed since last summer. I just turn the camera off, which seems to be the only solution I've found as well.

Has anyone used an SD card of 64 GB size that hasn't gotten corrupted using the Canon Rebel T3i? I have used Transcend 200x and Sandisk Extreme Pro and have had problems. Thank you.
#223
Hey rsmith02,

I really appreciate your reply. Did your cards get corrupted only with Movie Record Restart option enabled? And were you able to completely repair the MOV files using these programs? Thanks again.

Alright awesome, that's great to hear a battery grip works for you too Dihelson. I also like the grip because the extra weight helps with stability. But with 15mm rod setup it can get difficult lol.
#225
Hey Dihelson,

Ok I understand. This was a concern for me in the beginning, but after shooting events over the past few years, so far I haven't seen any degradation of my sensor. I also take the lens off, have the body cap on, and do a manual sensor clean for about a minute while pointing the camera down. This does a pixel remap to remove any hot or dead pixels. Luckily there's a way to remove them in After Effects if they are in H.264 video. For Raw Video, that's the beauty of Adobe Camera Raw. I noticed using a battery grip allows for better temperature of the T3i and 7D. I was on a shoot one time where the 7D shut off because the operator wasn't using a battery grip. One of the files wasn't recorded and one shot had to be reshot another day. I haven't had the T3i or 7D shut off on me, and I believe this is due to having a battery grip. I will make sure to post here if I do see any problems with my sensor over time however.
