Thanks Ibrahim!

All my shots were pretty much continuous, as far as I remember, but my takes were only about 10 to 15 seconds long, and with sound recording disabled.
I think that when I tried to record sound, the camera would stop recording after 10 or 15 seconds.
I didn't find any skipped or corrupted frames in any take...

thanks!

That's great results! How were the results in 24fps in case you have tried it?
#52
Nice.
Were your shots continuous or did you get any skipped/black frames in your shots using the provided settings?

For cinemaDNG files (from ML): In the camera RAW tab of davinci's color grading tab I change decode using to clip, color space and gamma to black magic design. Highlight recovery checked.
In my project settings -> color management I set the timeline color space to rec709 gamma 2.4 (which is my default).

Color grade using the nodes and if you want to use a LUT create it in the begining and add it at the end. Create the remaining nodes prior to the LUT.

That my starting point when I grade footage to look cinematic and not videoish. Any better suggestions from others since I come mainly from the Pr/AE world.

Thanks Danne!
I already have twixtor on my PC, it is a great plugin.

Hi Ibrahim, and congratulations on your first short!

In terms of grading, generally it looks good. However, I think that your blacks are lifted too much. I know that this look has been popular over the last ten years or so, but I think it makes your film look too washed out.

However, this might be a problem with your export settings, as the RGB values for the letterboxed area (which should be 0, 0, 0) is actually 16, 16, 16.

Thanks man I appreciate your feedback.

Well I have had a few difficulties maybe that has caused what you mention, however sorry for asking I don't understand what you mean by 16, 16 , 16.

My render setting was tiff 16bps RGB since davinci crashed when I tried to export directly to DNxHD 444.

I worked between 64 and 960 IRE since I learned that that is the range of rec 709. Is that why the blacks look that washed out?

I think I see some sharpening with a wide radius or perhaps it's a local contrast adjustment... I would be inclined to not do that. It's particularly crunchy looking at around 4:15

There is also some colour banding on skin (for example at around 5:55). Maybe you are using a LUT that is causing this.

Finally, I think there is a frame rate problem somewhere in your workflow as some clips are a bit jerky.

Aside from these grading considerations, the camerawork is good and so is the editing.

True, I should remove the sharpening effect, especially its radius.

The issue with frame rate belonged to the drone scenes. How do I use drone footage in 30fps? My drone cannot film in 24fps.

Hi folks!

Anyone willing to share the limits of 600d and which version they're using? And also which version they think is the "most stable". I am mostly interested in 24fps, 16:9 and even 2.35:1.

Hi folks!

Here is a short film, which is in Swedish with English subtitles. It shows how vunerable it becomes for a youth to be dragged into the crime world if falls into some social problems and at the same time is surrounded by bad friends.

https://vimeo.com/258837680

Let me know what you guys think about the color grading, DP work, etc, especially taking into account that it is my first short film and first davinci work, apart from a visual effect (done in AE). :D
The work took me two months with 1-3 people behind the scene.

I think I'll be leaving the AE world however some claim that AE leads to better picture quality than davinci, is that true?

Another Cheap solution ... 3 of them parallel...

That's a lightweight and interesting solution c_joerg.
How many hours can you record on your 6d with the ML?

Where can I buy the components. Have you built it yourself or can it be bought as a whole?

Can't agree more with whitelight about the video.

14-bit is great from 5D3. I can't see any of the 5D3 raw benefits used in this video. Everything is off.

Sorry to say, I sound harch. But there so many other cameras if you only need the resolution of 4k sort of and by using another camera you could easier learn technique to make a shortclip.
But maybe this video is about something else. Its sometimes heavy magenta casts in your video, maybe its the ND filter.

I wonder which 5d3 raw benefits are you refering to?

Hardware and Accessories / Powerbank

Hi,

I need to know if anyone of your guys are using a powerbank with a coupler or some other solution to power your 5d mark iii.
All my batteries have cracked (probably due to overheating) so I am looking for another alternative than using batteries. Any suggestions?  :)

Interesting. Which camera and firmware are you using and can you  see the cropmarks, histogram, zebras, etc.

Hardware and Accessories / External monitor

Hi,

I am using a 5D mark III (firmw. 1.1.3) and want to buy the most stable external monitor for my gimbal dji Ronin m axis.

I have thw following to choose from but haven't found enough info from the forum if I can record in RAW to my CF-card:

Lilliput 5D-II/O 7 "

Aputure VS-2 FineHD or any other from aputure such as aputure VS-3 or VS-5

SmallHD AC7

Among these  which features do not work with these monitors? By that I mean, histogram, cropmarks, etc.

I don't think so. One of the things I was trying to open was a project I believe I originally put together under 12.5. I think mine was crashing whenever it handed the DNG off to the GPU for processing which it still needed to do. If yours is a similar problem and non-DNG footage works you might be able to render out to prores or something in 12.5 and then grade/edit in 14.

Hmm that's a good temporary step.

Is the problem that the graphics card in question is not supported yet in v 14?

I think it's something in Resolve 14. I'm seeing the exact same problem under OSX. Resolve crashes trying to open ML DNGs (maybe all, just don't have anything else to try). This is old footage that worked in earlier versions too. All of it was generated with mlvdump.

So you didn't get the same problem in v.12.5. Is it possible to import these footages to v 12.5 save and then continue the work on v 14 and take advantage of its new features?  :D

 :) Hello countryman,

Bra jobbat!

I fixed my problem by explicitly setting the GPU processing mode to CUDA instead of Auto.

I tried both CUDA on and on auto, it is still crashing.

I am using Davinci 14 and have the same issue while attempting to import a cDNG folder: while draging it to the media pool the program crashes. I can't even click on the folder that contains the cDNGs prior to draging them into the media pool. I used MLVproducer to convert MLV to cDNG.

I have a very strong system.
Here is the system specif:
- Intel Core i7-7700K Kaby Lake Processor Socket-LGA1151, Quad Core, 4.2GHz, 8MB, 91W, 14nm, HD630, OEM/tray
MSI Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon, S-1151 Moderkort, ATX, Z270, DDR4, 3xPCIe-x16, SLI/CFX, 2xM.2, Mystic Light RGB
HyperX Savage DDR4 2400MHz 32GB 2x16GB 2400MHz (PC4-19200) DDR4 CL14, XMP
MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X Grafikkort, PCI-Express 3.0, 11GB GDDR5X, 1544/1657MHz, Pascal
Samsung PM961 SSD 512GB M.2 NVMe V3 TLC, Polaris, up to 2800/1600MB/s read/write, PCIe 3.0 x4, prod only
2 x Samsung EVO SSD 850 - 1 TB each

I have even tried to put the cDNG in the C drive from one of the EVO SSD drives but that didn't help either.

Which of the builds is the most stable to use on 5d3 firmware 1.1.3?
I am mostly interested in shooting at 24p in 16:9 and 2.20:1 with sound with the highest resolution possible, therefore mostly continuous.
Can I use MLV producer for converting these footages to cDNGs?
#70
Amazing details Victor. How stabile is the 3k built on 24p?
Of the list of different builts for 5d3 1.1.3 which one has been the most tested as successful with least of bugs?
#71
Hi,

I want to record in 2.20:1 1920 pixels (). Is there any cropmark for 2.20:1 for download?

#72
I noticed that is is some kind of a bug only heard from MLrawviewer 1.4.3.

When I export MLV files via MLVproducer I don't get any problem with the audio.
#73
I've been using Nightly.2017Mar30 on my 5D3 113.

In almost 90% of cases my audio is not synched with my footage. Besides that the begining of the audio is found either at the end or in the middle, vice versa.
It makes it almost impossible for me to synch my audio to the audio of my field recorder in post.

Any ideas what I should do?

Share Your Videos / Fashion video for HayaH

Here is one of my latest videos filmed with 5d3 1.1.3. at 48fps for a swedish fashion firm hayah.se.
I don't know about you guys but I find 48fps too look nicer in terms of attaining natural sharpness and colors than 24fps. It's only too bad that I only could get 6-8 seconds at a time on 48fps override.

General Help Q&A / Re: Picture style under Expo
May 23, 2017, 04:46:34 PM
Hwere do I search for this picture style?

I thought that the picture style won't affect the RAW recording in any way.
