Timelapse from Video (on the 70D)

Now if you don't need the post-processing options and other stuff and want to do these kind of car-lapses, why not just get any random action cam?

Hi Stefan!

I can't speak for jesús?, but for myself and many others, there's no desire to go spend another $400 on an action cam to do timelapse.  We prefer a single rig to carry and the quality of the sensor and processing on the 70D.  That said, one of the biggest advantages for FPS Override is saving the life of the shutter.  When you do a lot of timelapse, you burn through your shutter pretty quickly.  We typically don't need the higher resolution of the full 20MP, as the timelapse will be played back on a standard HD monitor or TV.  And aside from ML assisting with increasing the quality of our shots or videos, one of the other things it does for us is to help simplify our workflow.  When using FPS Override, as opposed to intervalometer, there's no need to download 9,000 photos (~48GB) and then stitch 9,000 photos together to make a 5 minute video.

Just my 2 cents ;-)
Cheers!!

On the headphone monitoring: I use canon factory made cable  (a/v out to cinch) + 3.5 mm adapter to plug the headphones. Im only getting loud noise in my ears and the LCD screen turns immediately black after I plug the cable into the dslr. It dosen't matter modes. Just the noise seems to change a bit every time I press any of buttons.

Canon 70D - 70D.111A 26th November: Beta-2b
@kriso --
The screen is going to go blank because you are plugging into an "Audio / Video" jack, so it switches off the built-in screen.

The headphones are not as easy as you are trying to make it.  That jack has a mono line-level output for audio.  First problem is that your impedance is going to be way off by trying to plug directly into headphones.  Secondly, if you are not using an adapter made specifically for this purposes, you are shorting two of the contacts together that shouldn't be.  Thirdly, there is no proper amplification to drive the headphones inductor.

Any idea if we are far away from headphone monitoring feature (using the a/v out to monitor audio on your headphones with the canon cable while video rec) and working fps override for the 70D?

@ kriso - i believe the answer is back in the thread if you read through it.  iirc the answer is it's probably not going to happen for any of the digic 5 cameras.

@aedipuss - That's not entirely true...  Although it appears that is the case for headphone monitoring, that is not the case for fps override.

@kris - Last I remember, nikfreak thought a1ex had an idea that may fix the fps override issues.

While we are at it I might as well implement "KEN_ROCKWELL_ZOOM" feature as seen on 5D3/6D if you wish. Take a look at the user guide
@nikfreak -- Huge thumbs-up for adding "KEN_ROCKWELL_ZOOM"!   :D
That will make my life a whole lot easier....  ;)

According to Eric Chan (Camera Raw Engineer) problem with importing DNG files to Adobe products that contain meta-data from EOS 70D will be fixed soon!
Source: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/canon-70d-corrupted-exif-data-of-dng-files

That mean we will be able to use MLV and post-edit DNG footages directly in Adobe products. Wonderful!
I'd like to give a big shout-out to Thobias for bringing the issue to Adobe's attention, rather than just complaining about how terrible Adobe is for not fixing something that they weren't aware of.

Cheers to you, Thobias!!!

There is report. Please, support me and help solve this problem. Thanks.

Excellent work Thobias.

@dmilligan  - can you and maybe others with more experience with this, click that link and contribute to the conversation to maybe help resolve this?

Fingers crossed! :)

If you ask me, this is really a problem with Adobe's software (it fails on perfectly valid input) and they should fix it. What good are 'open standards' like DNG if even the company that made the standard fails to implement it correctly. Of course the probability that Adobe would fix something like this are slim to none.

Just out of curiosity, how many people here have actually contacted Adobe to report this issue?  Honestly, they can't fix that which they don't know is a global issue.  I'm just as bad about this as the next guy/gal, but if we don't all report it, we really have no place complaining about Adobe's customer service and development model.  And if only one person reports this bug, it won't even register to them.  It has to be seen that it is affecting multiple customers.

That being said, let's all go and report it now, so we can be part of the solution. :)

Brand new. Interested in Time Lapse.  Here is my first attempt, and I just want to know if the problem is related to ML, or the lens, or the camera or something else entirely.

Canon 70D, Tamron 24-70, manual focus, stabilization off. Tripod mounted, most all settings set to manual. ML intervalometer set to 3 sec.

https://flic.kr/p/zvszQ5

In alternate frames, the camera seems to jump up and down, just a little. Every other frame, all odd numbered frames seem to be recorded at a few pixels higher than the even numbered frames. The camera is mounted to tripod, and very steady.  Seems like some sort of software adjustment happening with the capture? The video goes very quickly, so it is hard to see.  I made a PDF with 10 sequential frames, but I don't know how to share a PDF file.

Here is a second export using only the odd numbered frames. Steady as a rock.  Weird.

https://flic.kr/p/zvwti9

Anyway, I don't think it is ML, but thought I would ask here first.

Thank you, love this software!
Michael

Hi dynalmadman, and welcome!  Thanks for the videos; it helps immensely to see the issue first hand.  Can you update your signature with which version you are running (A or B)?  This helps with troubleshooting the issue.  Can someone else (anyone?) confirm this scenario on another camera, please?  It seems way too coincidental that it is precisely the same number of horizontal lines and precisely every other shot, for it to be hardware related (i.e. lens).
Thanks!!

-FPS-Override 6 fps & Under: Vertical Banding showing as expected.

@DeafEyeJedi:  Admittedly, I haven't tried FPS Overrive *above* 6fps....  Are you saying that the vertical pattern stripes don't occur at 7fps and above?
#11
@nikfreak:  Looks like there may have been some confusion.  I was the one doing the testing and screen uploads of the FPS Override and analysis of the vertical patterns and testing with the lens cap on.  Everything I've done has been in h264; I've never shot video in RAW.  I know some would prefer you not work on this, as they have other prerogatives, but I am willing to assist in any way I can to help solve this.  Cheers!!

No...  this is not a scene from "The Matrix"  :P

Not sure if this helps or not...  This is an FPS Override (6FPS) with the lens cap on.
I believe what we are witnessing , technically, isn't vertical 'banding', as I previously called it.  It's more of a pattern.  I did look at two of my videos, and compared the vertical stripes, and they were identically placed stripes / patterns in all of the videos.

For example:

These are two different videos, shot at two different times, with two different lenses.  Notice how the stripes / patterns line-up vertically between the two...

As @dmilligan mentioned, I'm afraid @nikfreak did previously point this out on more than one occasion and is there a specific reason why if I open FRSP DNG's directly from 70D.111B just perfectly fine within ACR in PS, AE and even works well in LR5 as well.

@DeafEyeJedi:  What version of ACR do you have installed?  LR & PS both use the ACR engine for decoding the RAW files.  The reason I ask is, you specifically stated you're using LR5.  LR5 uses ACR8.  I only noticed the issue with the ACR9 engine, which is what LR6(CC) & PS 2014/2015 uses.

Adobe raw can not open DNG Silent Picture , error...
almost tried everything ,
magiclantern-Nightly.2015Aug08.70D111A
magiclantern-Nightly.2015Aug15.70D111A
EOS 70D
same situation on convertion  from mlv. to dng

My apologies for not being able to give more detail at this time, but this is what I found in the time I had...

Photoshop 2014 / Camera RAW 9.1.1 - "Unable to read the full size image" "There was an error parsing the file"
Photoshop 2015 / Camera RAW 9.1.1 - "Unable to read the full size image" "There was an error parsing the file"
Lightroom CC (a.k.a. 6) / Camera RAW 9.1.1 - "The file appears to be unsupported or damaged"
Lightroom 5.7 / Camera RAW 8.7.1 - *Works Perfectly*

Looks to be a problem with Camera RAW 9 opening DNGs from the 70D.  Wasn't this addressed a couple other times back through this thread?  I can't remember and don't have time to search now, but I thought there was an issue with the DNG files coming out of the 70D and the latest Adobe versions not working correctly.  I thought someone mentioned using a RAW editor and changing the camera model metadata in the file from 70D to 60D.

@OlRivrRat and @JohnyG_71: thanx for testing banding again. Not that I had incorparated a fix I just wanted to be rest assured it happens again. Now I ofc searched around the forums but do we suffer from the linked issue or is it unrelated in your opinion:

http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=9564.msg91691#msg91691

Could you take some time and read through above link?

@nikfreak:

A lot of the sample links are dead now, but after reading through a lot of it, and making my best intuitive guess based on what I've read, I would say that what I'm seeing here is unrelated to what is posted in that thread.

Please let me know if there is any specific testing or information I can provide to assist with finding a fix for this one.

Cheers!!

Unfortunately, vertical banding still exists.

1280/60/IPB - ML set at 6FPS, all other ML settings at default.

#17
@OlRivrRat:  The vertical banding seems to be most prevalent in the dark areas of high contrast scenes.

@Johnny: Did his happen on earlier builds or is this your first time trying FPS override feature?

@All: Can anyone using 70D.111A confirm the issue?

@nikfreak:  This is my first time trying FPS Override feature on the 70D, so I hadn't tried it on earlier builds.  Please let me know if there is any other feedback / testing I can give in regards to this.  Thanks!!

Oh, I also had the test message with the LV Display Size, Timer A Orig, Timer B Orig.

Cheers!!

Good evening!

I just installed Alpha 7a2, and set the FPS Override to 6FPS.  The whole video has vertical banding, as demonstrated in the below screen shot.  I shot two more videos; one at 3FPS and another with a different lens.  All three have the same vertical banding.  Any ideas?

Thanks!!

I'm sure you think you are so smart and funny. However if you were you would realise that I was just asking if it was being worked on. I'm also sorry that your life is lacking something otherwise so you wouldn't have to post boring remarks.

My deepest apologies...   That question is actually answered in detail here...

There is an excellent comprehensive answer to that question here...

...Drawing from this, ML Is preferable for film projects that usually have 1 minute scenes and not for documentary type of productions that have 20+  minutes of continuous footage....

Dont take this as a slgith against ML and all the work that went into it,  but since 1080p is now becoming industry standard, im guessing 1080p with h264 would probably be a better bet than a 14 bit raw video at half the resolution since i doubt upscaling 600p to 1080p would cut it even if it is 14bit.

No, not really....  As already stated, it's a hardware limitation of the 70D.   If you need 20+ minutes of continuous footage at 1920x1080 24fps 14-bit RAW, then get a 5D Mark III and put ML on it.  The CF card interface of the 5D3 is plenty fast enough to accomplish your needs and ML runs beautifully on it for your RAW shooting pleasure.

Hello.

I am new. I have problem with ML install in first step.
How to know if my EOS 70D is A or B version?
I don't know if i need to install Download Alpha5 release for 70D_111A  or Download Alpha5 release for 70D_111B?

I just know it is 70D(W).

Thank you very much!

Hi Henry, and welcome!
Please try to install 70D_111A...  If it is the correct one, it will install successfully, if it is not the correct one for your camera, it will tell you, and you can install 70D_111B at that point.

I read it. And there's absolutely no way to "unhide" them, not even for testing purposes? ;)
Ok, what you wanna say is: it can brick the cam? I'm willing to test it anyway...

Thanx!

Hi UWP,

It is best to respect the developer's process and plan.  Please do not push and pressure someone who is doing a great and wonderful thing for our community, and for free.  If you posses the skills, everything you need is out there to brick your camera all on your own.  In the meantime, please show gratitude by being patient and respecting nikfreak's methods.

Cheers!
