I just tried to downgrade the 1.2.1 firmware back to 1.1.3, won't work! Bastards!

EDIT: Finally got it to work. I downloaded 1.1.3 from another Canon server and reformatted the card.

General Help Q&A / Re: 5D III Question.

I would suggest formatting an SD card in camera and then loading Alpha 3 on that card.  To use the alpha you will have to run the firmware update from the Canon menu after each time you power on the camera (as of yet, no autoboot).  Also suggested is disabling the auto power off feature in Canon menu.

As for intervalometer, a1ex clearly states what features are enabled and why in 5DIII Alpha 3 here: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=2602.msg18197#msg18197:

I guess it's time to post a small update, mostly with bugfixes.

The most important change is a card test executed at startup. My 16GB (Kingston 266x) card has problems, and I'm trying to diagnose the issue: maybe it's just my card, or maybe it's related to this. If the test fails on your camera, please report.

There are also a few handy tweaks:
- Histogram and waveform moved to bottom
- New experimental display for focus peaking (extreme sharpness)
- 16:9 bars for anamorphic preview
- Focus box moves faster (not yet customizable)
- After taking a picture and pressing Zoom In right away, you can scroll through pictures
- Saturation boost when adjusting white balance
- Warnings for bad settings (e.g. if you set picture quality to JPEG instead of RAW by mistake)
- Dim the red LED while recording (make it less distracting)

Now, about the photo features. I can enable most of them, but, while running the random stability test, at some point the camera froze; I took the battery out, and found out that LiveView was no longer working (even when booting without card). Cleared camera settings and it's OK now. But this shows clearly that there's something fishy inside.

So, all other features that depend on properties will have to wait until I'll understand what happened. It may take a few months, maybe more, maybe less, I have no idea.

Current alphas are pretty safe, to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks guys.

I'm pretty much ready with alpha 2 testing and tweaking, and if there won't be any major quirks, I'll announce it tonight. Can you take a quick look at it?

Thank you a1ex!!!  My 5D Mark Free thanks you too  :D

General Help Q&A / Re: Force HDMI

Force HDMI-VGA

This option will force a low-resolution mode on HDMI displays (720×480), which avoids black screen when you start/stop recording.

Has anyone used one of these?  Sounds like a cheap motion slider that I can use the hell out of and not care if it gets some wear and tear.  Plus I like that it runs off of LPE6 batteries, which I already have plenty of  ;D .  Anyone used one?  Thoughts?

I wanted to practice more with ML FPS Override and I wanted to use both the 5Dmk2 and 60D with the ML v2.3 RC2.  Nature gave me the chance...

The closing pictures in both videos were taken using the 5Dmk2, ML HDR Bracketing, and Photomatix.  I hope everyone is having this much fun!

I saw this post and thought I would give it a try!  It made for an interesting drive to work...

Camera:  550d;  Canon Firmware: 1.0.9;  16GB SanDisk Extreme SD HCI  30MB/s; Canon 50mm f1.8 lens; Ambient Temp  32c

In this test I wanted to see how dialing down the FPS in movie mode, using FPS Override, worked.  Shot was done in a covered porch, each shot starting immediately after the previous ended.  All camera controls set to Manual.  Shoots were done to create approx. 10 seconds of finished video for each test.

Tests #1-#4: Aperture, Shutter speed and ISO all same (f18; 1250; 100)
FPS Override as follows:
Test #1:  3 FPS, 100 second shoot
Test #2:  2 FPS, 150 second shoot
Test #3:  1 FPS, 300 second shoot
Test #4:  0.5 FPS, 600 second shoot

During the test shoots, it is obvious that exposure becomes more and more over exposed as fps rate drops.

Test #5 changed exposure parameters from #4, but almost to a reverse view as it seemed that where it should have gotten darker, the shot got even lighter.

Test #5 :  Aperture f22,  Shutter 4000,  ISO 100
Camera overheated at about 4 minutes shooting time (4 seconds movie time) and required shut down.  This may be only due to high outside temp, even though shooting in shade.

Main concern is that when using slow fps, trying to focus, set exposures are very difficult due to view delay in Live View.  Not certain why over-exposed.

So I mounted the 60D to my hood and the result was my first attempt at using FPS override:

I will definitely practice some more with this feature!

This is a fan film based on the film within a film from the Scream series.  This was shot on a Canon 60D using ML.  The scene at the end of the closing credits was shot using Canon 5Dmk2 also with ML.  This was a fun little weekend project  ;D
