Here's the link to my latest video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbo1SvO667A

(Or, you can find it in the Share Your Video section of the forum under: "My Latest Effort, In Anamorphic")

Shooting full frame, probably the best option is using a Kowa prominar Bell & Howell or a 16-H or 8Z
I actually just bought a Kowa 8z, and it is optically flawless. Once focused properly it is Razor sharp. The one i got unfortunately, doesn't seems to flare that much even though that it is directly affected by the taking lens. The upside of using a Kowa 16-h / 8-z / bell & Howell is that now the shortest taking lens becomes a 50mm without going crazy with vignetting

Shots look great, very nice look from the anamorphic. Is the vignette part of post processing or is it caused by the lens being a bit too wide?

Do you use diopters for the closer shots?

Thanks for sharing!

no diopters for close ups. The Kowa prominars closest focus distance is 1 meter! YAY! ^__^

The combo i used was an old Russian Lens: Jupiter 9 (85mm f2) + the Kowa Prominar 16-S
The vignetting is caused by the lens AND the fact that I shot most of it between f4 and f11 on the Jupiter 9. With the lens at f2 you don't get much vignetting.

The Kowa 16-S is a good lens, great bokeh and nice flares. BUT because the rear element is fairly small, on a full frame you can just about get away with it if you are shooting 4:3 on a helios 58mm (44-2)

I was only joking about the misallignment. :) If you would like to see my most recent video, you will notice it too even though i made sure my Anamorphic adapter was properly alligned.

I shot that video with an Kowa prominar 16-s 2x

Big UP!!

Great video! Where did you filmed it?
#80
Did you made sure that the anamorphic adapter was properly alligned? I think I saw some slanted lines in your video! :)

regardless, if you lived in Italy it would be nice to connect. Me and some friends are exploring the possibilities to shoot with anamorphic adapters a very nice short film, and we are currently looking for other people to come on board! :)

where did you get the clamps? From vidatlantic?
Thanks!

And here it is: The latest "test" I did recently.

Camera: 5D3 + Magic Lantern
Lens: Zenit Jupiter 9 85mm f2 + Kowa 2X Anamorphic adapter

shot at 1600x1200 4:3 Aspect ratio

Not 4K, Still the best way to get something "bigger" thank standard FullHD, But that it's only my opinion

I don't see any noise :)

Hey DpMikey, if you go through the video section of the ML Forum, you will find out that there are actually quite a lot of people who are doing narratives/shorts with Magic Lantern :)
Music videos, commercial, you name it, there's somebody probably doing it with Magic Lantern already! :D
If i remember, one guy in Brasil did an hilarious sit-com with it, and it even won an award.. (If only I could find the video..)

Regarding your idea, I have been thinking for quite a while to start a thread and see if other people using Magic Lantern (In London, UK) would like to join this project I have been working on for ages.
What I do not really understand, is why make it out as a contest?
Theoretically, if all the people using magic lantern would pull together to make a movie there would be enough capital an manpower to do anything! :D

Try start the camera in C mode with a clean card / ML card / No card and wipe the custom setting. also look for dump files in the ML card

Ok what part of: "Copy ML files on the card" is not clear? It does not says just COPY the .FIR or just copy this or this. :D If you do not copy ALL the files, magic lantern WON'T run.

So, copy EVERYTHING inside that zip file. :)

The ROOT of the card it means the first window that opens up once you click the card icon on your MAC desktop

No, there is little to no advantages to select an older build. The newest builds usually have bug fixes and new feature implemented.

also, MAKE EXTRA SURE that you have the correct Canon firmware running on your Cam. :)

Hope this helped

If you are converting DNG sequences into any other video format through After Effects, REMEMBER to tell AE to interpret the footage at the correct framerate you shot it. It will interpret the footage at 30fps by default.

Why do want to disable it in the first place?

Totally feel you bro! :D Keep it up! (The hyperlapse bits must have been a PAIN to shoot)

Thanks aschille! Appreciate the compliments! :)

Looks like you were messing with the highlight sliders in LR which may be causing that flickering effect?

That could be quite true indeed. I will have to investigate that. Coloring had to be done FAST. and the director wanted something Very contrasty. There is A TON of sloppy filmmaking in this video, I am still waiting to hear all the mistakes! :D

I believe the flickering it could be due to the extreme contrast that it was required.
In the end, the client was happy and lots of viewer seems to like the video, I believe that it could have been done much much much better. Oh well, I can tell you this: lots of lessons were learned on every side! :)

Oh, and the editing was done in Final cut X NOT BY MY CHOICE the editor only knew how to use Final Cut...

ello ello everybody! This time THIS is a video that I have shoot.

specs:

CAM: Canon 5D3
LENSES: Nikkor AI-S 28mm f2, Helios 58mm f2, zenitar 85mm f2, Canon 24-105 IS L f4
GRIP: DJI Ronion-M + a very, very rude and vulgar 4 wheel trolley, Tripod, snorricam
LIGHTS: Mostly natural + a few LED panels
POST: Editing in final cut (Thing that I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, let happen again) coloring in Lightroom.

p.s.
There are errors-a-plenty in this video, who spots them all wins a prize.. ;)

as I said: I DID NOT SHOOT THIS VIDEO.

But I bet my ass* it was done with magic lantern. Any opinions?

A "similar" video from another prominent Italian Rapper that I have shot will be out tomorrow.
So, what do you think, is this magic lantern or not? :)

Raw Video / Re: To RAW or not to RAW?
March 20, 2016, 04:05:06 PM
I would dare to add, since from what I am reading you want to have your film screened at festival, you should focus on the story and the script first. THEN decide how to shoot it. :)
I shoot h264 only if anyone specifically asks for it. On anything else, I shoot RAW.

BEAR IN MIND:

If you Do decide to shoot RAW I would STRONGLY suggest you to treat it like shooting film. a 64 GB CF card will give you 10-15mins top at full HD depending on which resolution you are shooting at If you get carried away, you will end up spending a fortune on storage. (Not to mention having to stop every half an hour changing cards) if storage space is not a problem but you don't dispose of let's say 10 64GB CF card, I would suggest to take into consideration integrating a Digital Image Technician into your production. Basically a person that is in charge of downloading media, back it up, review it and make sure it's not corrupted.

Can't change the iso through canon menu, and if I do try change it through magic lantern while recording in MLV (RAW 2.0) camera crashes.

BUT I can change Shutter speed and Aperture while recording MLV (RAW 2.0) all the time . (just did 25 recording test, all worked fine apart for changing the ISO, but I would suppose it is pretty normal not being able to change ISO while recording.. the way I see it it's like changing the film of your camera you are shooting on it)

I can change shutter speed and aperture while recording MLV (RAW 2.0) on my 5D3 firmware 1.2.3 with nightly build from august 2014

What adapter did you buy? I personally have a Kowa prominar 2x. It's ok. It is quite sharp, but it has this annoying halation when it get hit by strong lights. wish I had enough money to afford one LOMO *__*

@axelcine

What you say is right. I don't usually want to share my gear info with customers, but, more often than not (and usually over the phone) they ask me What gear do I have. I say: a good HD cam, good primes and a gimbal. And the usual reply is: what Camera do you have? Than I feel a bit cornered, as I think it is not very nice replying the same thing or tell them to not worry about that.

Regardless, future looks brighter, the next couple of years will be exciting! :)
