Reverse Engineering / .MXF to dngs
November 30, 2016, 01:35:28 AM
Since .mlv files are basically a "container" for the singular .dngs

I was thinking, so is .mxf files a container for some other type of singular images or instead it instead a proprietary code?
If that's the case, is there a way to unwrap the .mxf files?
Why you might ask. Firstly, just to know if it possible and secondly because I quite like to work with dng sequences. I found them to be quite adaptable.

Thanks for your time reading this! :)

Francis francis, Maybe it's time to stop using the same LUT? :)

Sorry, just following the post. :)

Ronin + IS lenses is a killer combo.

We shot some scenes of this music video with Ronin + 28mm Nikon f2 AIS and Canon 24-105 f4 IS L

The scene inside and around the drug den are shot with the 28mm, the shot on the bike was with  the IS lens.
If you pay attention you will see the difference bettwen an IS lens and a non IS one :)

In dreamland one could Imagine somebody developing a software as Magic Lantern for such cameras as the 1DC and release it for free, obtainable through.. Torrent sites, for example. I do not know if it is possible to trace the code behind a software back to the original developer/s but I assume that it shouldn't right?

I repeat, this elaboration it's just building castles in the air, but Theoretically there is nobody stopping a resolute individual from developing it's own version of Magic Lantern for cameras as 1DC, C100, C300 etc. and releasing it to the wild.

Liked the video you posted nikfreak by the way. :)

Thanks nikfreak! That was a good read

I guess ML could be a security tool, but I would say that this scenario would hold up better on cameras like the 6D with wifi?
Well, i guess an hacker could access your camera if it had access to your computer while the camera is connected to it.. Even if it didn't have any bluetooth or wifi.

Good rule of thumbs when shooting raw is to overexpose. mlv files are recorded in a way that more information is stored in the highlights, therefore easily retrievable in post instead of video, where once you blow your highlights well.. you are pretty much done for.

How much overexpose? Well, there is not a set rule. Use raw zebras to give you a hint. Do some tests and find out. :)

Oh, one last thing, don't be so afraid of the Noise, embrace the grain! In my honest opinion, you can get away with iso 3200 and have nice clean results if you know how to expose properly :)

also because, added bonus of overexposing, is that once you lower the exposure level in post you will automatically lower the noise level in your footage, because you know, noise likes to hide in the shadows! :)

Yes, solved for me as well! :)

Forum and Website / Re: New server
October 20, 2016, 12:31:33 PM
I hope this might help.

I have finally managed to access the forum But, I can do that only if browsing while using a VPN.

my PC runs windows 7 pro + Service Pack 1

On chrome version 53, while running Betternet 4.0.7
Same for Firefox 49 + Browsec 2.0.3
I can access the forum. Without the VPN i get:

Data too long for column 'ip' at row 1

On Opera Stable 40 I get the same line of code if I try to access the forum

General Help Q&A / Re: White balance issue.
October 17, 2016, 06:11:51 PM
Thank you @dfort for your detailed analysis of my file.

I did try to convert the same file with raw2cdng 1.6.5 after usinv mlv_dump (the modfied version of bouncyball) and the converted .cdng files had the correct white balance.

...Stupid question:
Is it thanks to the 2 extra bit, why mlv white balance is not baked in like Odyssey's 7Q+ dngs?

:)
Thanks!

General Help Q&A / Re: White balance issue.

After properly understand what the great A1ex meant, I can happily announce that there is nothing wrong with my MLVs.
I was guilty of ignorance not knowing that mlvrawviewer export every .dng with a default white balance of 5500k.

Thanks everyone to clarify my doubt and to allow me to learn a little bit more. :)

Here's the direct link to one of the .mlv files, as you will see, the white balance it's supposed to be 2800k.

I am not really concerned if Magic Lantern .dng files don't have a baked in white balance, like odyssey's .dngs or blackmagic .dngs

I still would like to know what: Output of "mlv_dump -v file.mlv" means. :)

Output of "mlv_dump -v file.mlv" ?

err.. Care to explain a little bit? :)

what do I need to produce? the .MRX files? the .idx files? the resulting .dng?
I am very sorry but I haven't yet got around using mlv_dump.

I have to apologize for forgetting to include all the details regarding the camera and build I am using.

Camera: 5D3
build: August 2014 firmware version 1.2.3

General Help Q&A / White balance issue.
September 28, 2016, 06:32:26 PM
Hi Everyone, for quite some time I started noticing one thing: my MLV files seems not to register the white balance I set at the time of filming.

At first, I didn't really pay much attention as I used to take advantage of changing it easily in Lightroom.
But recently some footage I shot at 3000k turned out to be at 5400k once converted through MLVrawviewer. And the same happened for other footage that was supposed to be shot at 6000k and 5500k.

for normal h264 videos and CR2 files the white balance remains set as correctly shot with the camera.
I did a couple of searches to see if anyone had the same "issue" (sorta) but nothing came up.
Is that supposed to be normal?

Thanks! :)

Just posting a reply to keep up to date with the post. :)

You can get around the crop problem easily using wider lenses! :) 15mm = 30mm 18mm = 36mm 24 = 46 etc. :)

I Believe Davinci has a LUT called ARRIsomething, Also premiere CC 2015, the lumetri panel has an ARRI Color profile that you can apply to your footage.

Also, regarding coloring, Basically just make everything "Blue&Orange" and almost anyone will praise your color grading.

General Chat / Re: Noise Reducing - help
August 28, 2016, 09:34:20 PM
Don't shoot RAW at more than 1600 ISO in very DARK condition, and ISO 3200 is really, really the limit. Anything more than that, consider the noise as an "artistic choice"

Ideally, my suggestion is try to shoot footage that DON'T need to be tweaked in post with noise reducing plug-ins.

Raw Video / Re: noise in video
June 30, 2016, 10:28:36 PM
if you are having problem with NOISE in your footage, I would suggest to light your scene more and use the histogram provided. try to get the istogram to be somewhere in the middle and not crushed on either side.

Using MLV, if you overexpose properly and then darken the footage in post iso 1600 will look like iso 320 with not a hint of noise.

Frankly, on my experience, if you shoot RAW and overexpose (not too much of course) you don't get much noise till iso 3200

BUT that it's only my experience :)

Walter Schulz crystal ball is always the better choice :D

Yes, that 1 meter minimum focusing distance is great!

Thanks for the info!

No pro! The Kowa prominars are great lenses.. optically on pair with iscos, it's the focus mechanism, the only thing that holds them back
