Archived porting threads / Re: Canon 6D
December 16, 2014, 08:19:19 PM
Hi everyone, could anyone please help me clarifay if an external monitor plus magic lantern will definitely works? i tried to search on the forum, but i didn't find anything that would help me clarify this question:

External monitoring while recording RAW on the 6D it is possible?

If yes, there is a monitor specific or anything could do the trick?

Are there any known settings combinations with an external monitor that could brick my camera?

What port would be more safe/reliable to use: HDMI or the A/V out?

Are there any known issues of external monitoring on the 6D?

I am planning to buy a 4 meter camera jib with a pan and tilt head, as you can imagine. it would be quite challenging shooting without a monitor i think! :)

Thanks to you all guys! :)

Thank you very much @DeafEyeJedi :)

I wish i had some software development skills, so to be able to help more! All i can do for now it is only report bugs

@nagualdesign

I have actually read some of the post related to bricked camera on the forum, and that reassured me quite a bit in case anything goes wrong. The amount of help that senior members and developers give is just amazing

If that can re-assure you: I used to have a 6D and a good set of lens, a nice laptop, electric guitar.
One night they broke in my room (as i am flatsharing) and the stole EVERYTHING i had (while i was asleep in bed) only leaving behind the ps3 and teleevision (strange huh?)

To get all the gear i had, i saved up for almost a year, as my day job pays very little. Well, after a lot of difficulties to find someone willing to lend me £1500, i re-bought my 6D and the first thing i did as soon as arrived: Install Magic Lantern. And trust me, the first time i installed it, my heart was racing at the thought of lose AGAIN my camera. i think i even broke some cold sweat when the ML installer kicked in.

The risk is there, and lighting can struck, but as all the amazing people on this forum have showed me, fear not. Because the advantages you get are really worth the risk you will take, and anyway, as long as you do everything following the instructions brilliantly provided by the geniuses behind this god-send firmware, you will be fine! Actually, i am saving up now in order to get the 5D mark III, so to be finally able to shoot continuos RAW! :)

Hi everyone, this post is self-explanatory.

If you need an extra man that is totally willing to work long hours for £0, if you need a partner to develop your projects, if you need a man that has tools that could improve your project, if you need a still photographer, if you need a graphic designer to design your film cover and posters, if you need sliders, steadicam or led lights for your project and you don't have them, if all you need it is only a person to hold your lights, bouncecard, mics. etc. the way you need it,
I am the man for you! :)

To make it short, i come from a musical background. I can write and produce music, i have a fair bit of knowkledge in sound engineering, and i spent the last 10 years trying to make it into the music business. It did not work out.
What i am doing now? Trying to make it into the film business! But, i had to start from scratch. and i literally do not know NOBODY here n London that shares my same passion, or works within the industry

I have a degree in graphic design, and back in italy i have worked for a photographic studio, for the RAI (the italian BBC) as a grip and cameraman assistant before moving to London (To pursue foolishly the Music Dream).

And now, after 6 years spent in England i am just aching to get myself involved into making movies. They say, that movies are a people's business. One thing i am struggling to find is actually, people to do movies with! Hence this post! :) I thought that there just might be another magic lantern user here in London UK that could use my help!

I hope you are gonna like the images i have posted below. I actually did a couple of videos with magic lantern, but they are so littered with problems, that after having seen what other people are able to do here with ML, i would feel ashamed of posting them.

Here below are some frame extracted from the latest project i am trying to finish (everything shot with Canon 6D + Magic Lantern)

And here below are some still photo and old graphic jobs i did back in italy.

One last thing, i am NOT ASKING for any payment of any kind. All i want to do is help and get experience! :)
Maybe the magic lantern forum is not the right place where to post this message right now, but.. i have got to start somewhere!

Probably, it's only a trick that my mind played on me! :D
anyway, great location for the shot. I like your work philosophy of getting the look right firstly modifiying the scene! :)

That zenitar looks fun to play around! :) but i would prefer something that is sharper when way open.. I think i will fall for Either the Canon or Sigma 15mm 2.8. Actually, you can find the latter one at around £300 (I live in the uk)

I actually found a couple of people on amazon in the UK that are selling the Canon 15mm f2.8 fisheye guess how much the want.. £600! xD for a used lens!

Of course.. I should have known that!  :D

It's really a shame about the adapter ring for FD mount. I had a couple not long ago, and the one with the glass in it.. well.. let's say it did Not improve the image to say the least.. I think you might find some quality ones, but i don't think it's worth the hassle to go to such lenghts..

Would be funny to try use a fisheye with a macro extention tube :)

Hey levas, i was checking this website out: (most probably, you already know it)

https://pixelpeeper.com/lenses/?lens=260

And one thing struck me, sending me to a quest: Finding a fisheye cine lens. so to have all manual focus and iris. In a way, having manual control on a lens grants it a broader compatibility. The downside being slightly prejudicating still photography ( I mean, you can shoot sport photos all manual, but let's face it: autofocus makes the job a lot easier! ) :)

Apart from the 8mm samyang, at this point in time, i don't know any other fisheye cine lens! :)

Hey thank to you all guys! :)

Chmee, the link you gave me was pretty usefull. Levas, i check the lenses you told me about and seems to me that the tokia is the winner.. Shame the tokina is quite slow, but from the samples i checked, i think is the winner..

Than, the sigma 15mm 2.8 fisheye came along! :D

Thanks Levas for your reply! :) I should have state that i have a Canon 6D so, full frame it is!

I asked this question because sometimes i think the barrel distortion a fisheye gives you is just too much.. :)

Hi guys, i was browsing the web.. Searching for a lens that has heavy barrel distortion. As, i am afraid getting a fish eye might be too much for what i need. Do any of you have any idea what i am talking about? :)

General Help Q&A / Re: 6D digital zoom, crop mode
November 29, 2014, 03:22:02 AM
Quote from: 1% on August 26, 2013, 04:03:56 PM
6D has no crop mode, if you enable it like on 650D/M/600D you get a nice soft brick.

Well, with hindsight in mind, you just reminded me at when i not knowingly pressed the zoom button while recording RAW a few months ago.. After the camera froze, the swift battery removal tip saved my 6D from bricking, i have to assume now! :)
#243
Quite true: I got a 6D as well, and if you wanna shoot RAW, 3200 is the limit. Above that threshold, you might as well not shoot RAW and go back shoot in H264! you can crank it up to iso 10000 and get very nice footage! (It is known the 6D is a delight when it comes to high ISO : )

General Help Q&A / Re: Dual iso
November 17, 2014, 02:42:29 PM
Togger, if i may, why do you need dual iso, anyway? :) Maybe i might be wrong, but logic since now has always told me that as long as you can keep your iso not exceeding 1600 the footage it should be pretty usable anyway! Than, some cameras have better noise reduction that other ( see the 5D mkII vs the 6D ) and some other cameras they were built for night shooting ( Sony A7 )

I am just assuming you want Dual-ISO for a cleaner footage, right? :)

Hi! he, if you did a quick search through the ML forum you should have stumbled across this:

General Help Q&A / Re: "Upgrading" Magic Lantern?
November 17, 2014, 04:51:39 AM
I hope that the question i raised will help other felllow 6D users. I personally initiate the question so to have peace of mind for the future and, by the way, the risk of bricking the camera is always there from the beginning! :)

But is a risk i am glad to take, seeing the advantages you get! And also, correct me if i am wrong, from my experience with ML as long as you respect basic things like: Wait at least 4 seconds before removing SD/CF cards, and if anything goes wrong, quickly take the battery out. You should be relatively fine, correct? :)

General Help Q&A / "Upgrading" Magic Lantern?
November 16, 2014, 11:28:53 PM
I was wondering..

If i wanted to change the nightly build i am using now on my 6D and "upgrade" to a newer version, all i will need to do is: Format the card deleting magic lantern, and simply put on it the newer version i fancy correct? Theoretically, there is no risk to brick the camera right? :)

Thanks
#248
Of course, it is not only the camera.. there too many things to list! :) and people! People specially! movies are a people business! No man alone can achive greatness! It's all team work! :) That's the main thing i am doing. Gathering people willing to do, gathering gear and gathering money! And i am incredibly gratefull to the whole magic lantern community. In all honesty, magic lantern was the final push i needed to dedicate myself to making movies. two years ago i had a recording studio, but i alwas loved movies. Once i found out that for £1000 you could get "the same" quality you would get for £40000 i was sold.

The post was intened to satisfy my curiosity, and the botwars trailer did it in part (still gota find a trailer so well made but for under £1500 (my actual speculative budget) by the way, i wanna see that movie!!
#249
Hey! First of all, thanks for the reply! :)

In second, thanks a lot for the link you posted, the botwars was amazing.. But, i hardly doubt that were able to pull that trailer for £1500 :) And if they did.. oh well, i am paying them to develop the script i have got! :D

What i meant with: "standing up with the big studios" it can be interpretade as a mixture of all things you said. (Technically etc.) How can i put it.. A clip that even thought has been made independetly feels like a £100 million :) Maybe it's just me havin trouble writing exactly what i mean .. English is not my first language, after all.. And, hey, if you can direct me towards all this amazing movies/teasers/short please do!

such a shame that the 5D MkIII is still so expensive... I personally think it is better than the blackmagic.. :) Nice video mate!
