Nice! For daytime lightning photography check out gg30 and mk11147s bolt trigger module:

Would it be easy to make a Lightroom plugin that copies dual iso cr2's to folder containing cr2hrd and other files, convert them, then re-import the resulting dng into lightroom?
#3
Mk, what settings do you use for night time captures on the 550d, rural low light pollution? I assume you turn AE off, use 15 fps with 1/15 shutter. But what ISO and aperture?

Thanks for the builds and answers.

Using Canon preview or Hacked preview?

Cheers.

Most shots are 1280 1:1.39 ratio 23.976fps and shutter as close to 180º as possible (174º usually) + some cheap ND filters. Extracted with Batchelor (to save time) and imported to After Effects with ACR. No further colour correction.

The wider shots are 1728 at 11.988fps and 90º shutter, twixtored to 50%. I discarded footage with obvious Twixtor artifacts (most of it).

PS. Which cities? Cairo should be there as well, but I stayed at the airport because of the current situation :(.
That's pretty much the workflow I use, except I do the cuts in premiere using a low quality proxy, open it in AE and replace with dngs through ACR.

Sydney (lived there for five years) and Bangkok (spent a few weeks at Thammasat University) - but back in Oslo now missing the southern climate.

Here's some stubborn testing. I think the results are quite useful, with some issues here and there (moiré, obvious twixtoring...).

*snip*

I haven't tried upscaling it to 1920 yet (can't keep the res on Vimeo anyway).

Dig the video (two of my favorite cities). What was your workflow?
#7
I can do it manually of course, but I might get bored standing around waiting for a bolt, so an automatic trigger would be awesome. If it is hard to implement with full res cr2, a high res silent picture (from multiple crops) might be possible?

Why not use NR in ACR?
I believe you retain more detail by using temporal NR in video editing.

Not of the bolt, but yeah, should be able to make it take a picture after a detection, but this would slow things down and would not be good for multisequence, might cause a miss of the next strike in a sequence.

Are you hoping to keep the image the same size as the raw_rec capture and just use the CR2 to clean up everything else?

It might stop the raw_recording though, so that might be an issue to have it stop after every time it take a picture.

I was thinking of upscaling the bolt dng to cr2 size or the largest resolution the bolt itself looks good, then mask the bolt on the cr2.

Awesome! Is it possible to automatically take a full resolution, shutter picture, after the raw -- so that you can overlay the bolt on the high resolution picture in post?
#11
For some reason I am unable to start raw rec using a flash test using the latest build. The small recording indicator goes from "off" to "on", but no video or silent pictures are recorded. 550d in video mode with raw rec and bolt set to ON.

There is instructions on how to merge the extra file with the first raw file on the forum, use the search function.

There was no signal running to the viewfinder, but the shutter, when depressed, would make the flash pop up in any dial setting and fire off rapidly.
Maybe it needs a psychologist?

Raw Video / Re: Aliasing with RAW

Tried various AE plugins, and so far I found the best results using one pass of "Temporal" noise reduction with RE:Vision Denoise followed by a pass of Magic Bullet Denoiser.

I was able to get rid of most of the micro-moire noise by using Photo Ninja to convert to TIFF; Using the "Enhanced" demosaicing algorithm and the Noise Ninja 3.0 Color Noise reduction, which reduced the noise considerably, and then using Magic Bullet denoiser II in Premiere.

You can import 32 bit float tiffs into Premiere.

I am going to link something I found a long, long, time ago. I never tested it myself but intended to at some point. My strategy for dealing with moire is generally to avoid things that are known sources of it. :-\

http://colorbyjorg.wordpress.com/plugins/

I would like to think that it's highly effective and kills any sign of moire. I do, at least, have hope (and optimism :) ).
Looks great, but I am on a windows system. Do you know of any similar plugins/filters for After Effects/Premiere?

Raw Video / Re: Aliasing with RAW

I am having a bad case of noise that I believe is caused by aliasing. This video is shot at ISO 100 180 degree shutter, 1280x640@15 fps:

Notice on the rocks you can see some "pixie dust" noise/grain. Does anyone know the cause of this and is it possible to fix in post?

Those of you struggling with getting the higher write speeds with the new hack... Try formatting exfat and post your results :)
What tool do you use to format, and what allocation unit size do you use?

This is pretty awesome. Would this mean a few seconds of 1080p is possible?

Here is another Test video i did last Weekend in Copenhagen Denmark.

Nice! How do you avoid temporal aliasing in small details like leaves and roof tiles?

I got some footage of skerries covered with dried lichen (tiny details) which shows bad noise from temporal aliasing (I assume) in bright areas, which is driving me crazy trying to correct.

Thanks alot Mk! I didn't find the post you mentioned with the settings,  but I assume you mean that I should set fps override to shutter speeds that is integer fractions/multiples of 360. So:

-In video mode (I don't have 1080p@30 fps available, so ill try 25 and 24)
-Shutter speed=360*x=Z
-RAW video and my trigger modules set to ON.
-point camera at storm

How is the reaction time compared to "Motion Detect"? I found I only got 1 bolt out of 10 using this.
#23
Thanks for that John. I did a test of waves crashing over an underwater rock with 14.985 fps twixtored to 29.97; not only did the result look natural, but the rendering times was a 5th of "non-multiple" twixtoring.

are u using Magic or Tragic for raw rec? Are you compiling yourself, if so are you using latest source from bitbucket, mine is all updated to this morning.

I am using the June 3rd Unified (Magic) with file manager you posted on the 550d thread, unfortunately I am at the summer house on an expensive connection so I am not going to set up what I need for compiling a build before I get home in a week. But don't worry about wasting your time on me unless you have already uploaded a build.

Thanks!

Since your on 550D I can hook you up with my bin and modules that will work on your camera?
Yes please =) The one I am using now is giving me the best results with raw video, hopefully yours is comparable.
