Yep, it's possible to control digital ISO for each scan line (just look at the bugs from 1-2 years ago). I don't see the point though.

It is? Even though you guys don't seem to find it of any practical use, this was amazing to hear, even if it can be accomplished only digitally.

If you don't mind, I have a couple of questions about the controllability, out of curiosity:

1) Would it really be controllable for each scan line, ie. one could apply the effect 0 - 100 (%, vertically, bottom - top), or 50 - 100, or 75-85, etc, as desired?
2) How finely could one control the exposure, for example +/- 1 digital ISO for each new scan line, or even fractions such as 0.1 ISO?
3a) Do you think it work without hiccups in video recording?
3b) If yes to above, I assume it would apply before the picture styles and the 8 bit conversion?

It would be interesting to try this out. Granted, using it would take a slight dynamic range penalty (ETTR with low analog ISO would help), but on the hand, it would be one less optical element in front of the lens potentially degrading image quality.

For video, I have to re-enable HTP every time in the ISO submenu (using Feb24 version on 500D). Maybe this is intentional?

For photos, it stays on once enabled.

That's good to know, thank you a1ex. I wish the HTP setting was saved on shutdown, though.

I prefer FPS override, and have used it for the 10 timelapses on my channel. In the 9th one though, there's a bit roughly in the middle where the exposure slightly saws back and forth as the scene gets darker and the camera tries to adjust for it. But that's likely my mistake in some way, and fixable.

And one minute taking 1% of the shutter life sounds crazy to me. It's probably true, I'm not arguing with that, but still crazy. :)

General Chat / Re: DSLRs with video noise reduction?
January 12, 2013, 12:50:03 PM
Thanks for the reply, 1%.

One reason why I'm asking is that since video cannot be shot RAW like stills can, I usually try have as much post-processing as possible completed before the video compression and the conversion to 8-bit takes place. Fine-tuning things like exposure and  picture style parameters. And here I was wondering if it was possible to expand that thought into noise reduction too, not that I have applied noise reduction to videos that much so far, but I was merely curious if it would be beneficial to do so (videos with increased ML digital ISO can get quite noisy). But if you think there's little point in looking into this, I can believe you.

I guess the lower resolution of videos is a consideration in this as well: with less detail to start with, noise reduction can't afford to destroy any more of it, and would have to be very carefully done.

About 6D (not about video NR anymore, though):

It's an interesting looking option, but I'm seeing full frame for less than 2000 € and wondering what's the catch. How does its video quality rank among DSLRs? Severe moire from what I've read, yes, but at least the low-light noise performance should be superior to most other models - maybe even surpassing 5D3 considering a similar sensor with slightly larger pixels?

General Help Q&A / Re: Exp. Override 500D in movie mode
January 09, 2013, 08:01:03 PM
Unless something has changed recently, it's unfortunately not possible at the moment. I've created a topic about this in the feature request section, have a look at it if you wish:

http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=4133.0

I included a few tips in there for fixing the shutter speed and aperture while still having auto exposure in movie mode. The workarounds have limitations and are rather inconvenient to use, though. ;)

Hehe, I thought the topic title was sarcastic. ;)

General Chat / DSLRs with video noise reduction?
January 08, 2013, 07:35:11 PM
Just curious about how it is these days. The 500D I bought in 2009 was the first Canon DSLR to shoot video clips. Understandably, it doesn't feature real-time, in-camera video noise reduction.

But now that time has passed and processing power increased, has this become possible with more recent models? If I've understood correctly, 5DMk 3 can do this on videos in real-time, and C300 as well, I assume.

What about the latest xxDs and xxxDs?

I'm not sure whether anyone has asked this before, but I couldn't find a similar topic by searching. Neither in the "don't ask" list.

The following is for cameras which allow auto exposure in movie mode, such as 500D.

What are the chances for an enhanced movie auto exposure, where the user can set priorities for ISO, Av and/or Tv? The camera would still try to obey the exposure compensation setting (-2EV ... 0 ... +2EV).

Examples:
- the user wants +1 EV with minimum ISO (100) and f/8 -> the camera adjusts Tv accordingly
- the user wants +1 EV with 1/60 shutter and f/8 -> the camera adjusts ISO accordingly
- the user wants +1 EV with max 200 ISO and (fixed) f/4 -> the camera adjusts ISO and Tv accordingly

The priorities (Av/Tv/ISO) could be set as minimum, maximum or fixed values. Not all three priorities have to be set or configured; the user could enable only ISO priority (and set its range), and let the camera worry about Av and Tv based on the exposure compensation setting, of course risking that the camera chooses 'wrong' values for these two. As mentioned earlier, the exposure compensation setting would still be more important, so the camera would ignore any custom priorities that restrict it from reaching the desired exposure.

I'm aware that there are already two tricks that already partially accomplish this: FPS override for Tv, and partially unscrewing a lens while holding DoF button for Av. Obviously both have their own limitations, aren't as convenient to use, and cannot help with setting a fixed ISO value.

The answer is probably: "not a chance"... :)

Feature Requests / Re: Checklist with popup reminders

For a basic, non-interactive checklist, you could use the Magic Lantern in-camera help files for this purpose. For example, I've replaced the white balance help page with a custom bitmap containing my checklist. :)

Feature Requests / Re: "Live time" bulb mode
August 05, 2012, 03:51:12 PM
That's certainly an interesting feature. It could be useful for night scenes, especially if it was also accompanied with a working histogram (often you won't be able to nail the exact bulb time required for maximum image quality).

But I fear that Magic Lantern won't be enough to make this possible on current Canons, I wish I was wrong though.

I think you should keep the picture style controls, self-timer MLU and sticky DoF. I'm also one of those who loved the movie mode remap, but I understand your reasons to remove it, even though for me it worked stable all the time (except for the recent sound recording crash?)

Features I could live without: REC picture style, defishing, false color, movie REC key remap, image position and crop factor display.
