A note for at least MLRawViewer, for those who get the side-by-side-configuration error message you can make sure you have the right C++ installations by using the installer in this link http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=393405

Thanks to Licaon_Kter for the tip.

@Licaon_Kter
Thanks, that seem indeed to have solved the problem. The program starts as it should. Will test it with a file tonight to see that the rest works too.
#53
I dont know where that is. Can try to run the .exe file later. Do you know where the log file is located?
#54
As I understand people have got this working on Windows 10, but out of the box the I only get the following error message:
"The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail."

As I understand it has to do with the C++ runtime installments. I think I have installed them all but still get the problem. The other guy expressed that installing adobe (premiere?) software solved the problem referring to the fact that they install c++ runtimes. Anyone else that got it running on Windows 10 and know what is needed to get it to do so?

@user0597

Thanks for your input. Installed all of the C++ runtime things (as from this http://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-01046/message-the-application-has-failed-to-start-because-its-side-by-side-configuration-is-incorrect.html)

That did not help. Also installed Davinci Resolve 12 but that did not help either. Your post proves that it should work on Windows 10, but the question is what is needed.
#56
Thats of course one idea :). Only cumbersome aspect is that I am currently on a Swedish version, so the error messages are in Swedish. Will try to translate as good as I can.

To start with I tried with MlRawViewer which gives me the error message something like:
Its impossible to start the program since its side-by-side-configuration is wrong. Control the evetlog or use the cmd tool sxstrace.exe for more information.

Hi.
I just started playing with my 50d. Recorded in raw rec, not mlv, and now want to convert to prores/windows equally format. So far I have not seen any info about the current converters supporting Windows 10 so was curious to hear if any of them do. Right now sitting on a weak laptop (M-5Y10) but will get back to my workhorse later.

Thankful for any info and advise.

Last thing before I go to bed. It often happens that the "Scanning Modules..." box show up and then do not disappear again. Is this a problem? It happens after I update the firmwire in order to make the card bootable.  It goes away if I restart the camera.

It also says, CROPMKS dir missing a short while. Then it dissipaters, does that mean it has been found or that I have a problem?

Is playback mode the only mode worth benchmarking? If not, how do I activate any other mode I should try? Damn, I read up on all this stuff a year ago, but stuff have changed and I forgot, sorry for the many posts.

@ dlrpgmsvc
What do you mean with all disabled in Canon and ML menu? Also, is there any other setting (like picture quality and so on that I should change).

So, these are the three benchmarks I have, two different Komputerbay 64gb 1000x and one Lexar 64gb 1066x (fake?). Seems they have roughly the same speed. Do you guys think I am doing something wrong or have I been super unlucky with all of them? Is there special settings I need to activate? I read about changing to playback mode or something, but cant figure our how. Read somewhere that you can send back Komputerbay cards that do not live up to the rating.

EDIT: Thanks Walter

Well, it works if I chose Primary, but not sure if its actually faster than in camera formatting. Will do more test later when I have time. For now it says my card only can do 50 Mb/s which is a bit sad. Will have to see if I can get it to do better. Bought from China so can be a fake for sure.

Actually I just saw that after formatting the card in camera it says the card is type primary and not logical. Are you sure that logical is the right selection when creating a new partition?

Is it possible to use spoiler so the pictures does not take up space for people who are not interested?

Yes, I apologize, I am quite used to using forums for questions and giving/receiving support so I should have known to give all information from the start.

I have already installed ML on the camera. In fact, if I allow the camera to format the card I can use the ML Benchmark to test it. I have a Kingston FCR-HS3 card reader. Card is a Lexar 64gb 1066. CLARIFICATION: If I format in camera and then put the ML files on it from computer it will boot, not straight after in camera formatting.

What I notice is that the color of the bar of the CF card in MiniTool does not get the same blue color as the other disks in my computer after formatting, but I think this is because it is set to Logical instead of Primary. I will try with the other program you recommended and see if I got the same results.

Actually I did format the card. I guess I would not otherwise been able to put the ML files on it? Also did not work when I tried to use the EOScard software. Both times the camera says the card is not formatted. Its a Lexar 64 GB 1066x btw. Tried it three times with same result. Hum...

@ dlrpgmsvc

Thanks for the fast answer. When I put the card in the camera it said the card was not formatted and needed to be formatted in camera. Should it not do this? Also, do I need to create the MISC and DCIM folder myself after formatting on the computer?

Thanks

Thanks dlrpgmsvc for the formatting guide.

Unfortunately it is not clear enough for me (first time installing and working with Magic Lantern). The first steps using MiniTool are very clear. Unfortunately the text under 50D is not clear enough. Is there something I should do in camera? Or is this just explanation of what happens if we do it in another way? Maybe I just get confused by the fact that you do not write in step by step instructions any more. I understand that I should sett the camera to 1920x1080 - 23,976fps - 5x zoomcard warmup 1Gb - GD off - All disabled in ML and Canon menu
only FAT32 supported on camera. But how about the in camera formatting that you write about?

So, after formatting the card using MiniTool, is there anything else I need to do?

Cheers,
Tullen

@ Andy

As I said, I can go either way with what program to use, whatever gives me the best result. Obviously the biggest issue right now will be my skill, but if I am to learn I rather learn the best way straight away. I do however understand that your advice is regarding the picture quality and not how good the programs are from a editing point of view. I have a i7 2700k at 4.5 GHz (effectively 8 cores), only 8 gig of ram, Geforce 670GTX and SSD hardrives for editing. Not in raid though, maybe something to plan for the future.

I will film a lot of fire art performance (at night with the fire as main light source), if that matters. But of course, if I get as good result with a faster and lighter Cinelog-C DNxHD work flow, I see no point in staying in Raw the whole way.

When I read on your website the process looks a bit different for Cinelog and Resolve compared to Cinelog and ACR. My impression is that the ACR one is more advanced and will give you better result. Is this correct or am I interpreting it wrong?
#68
Thanks Andy.

I guess Resolve sounds like a good option since it is also free, even though debayering of course is important. Would you say it is as good editing software as Premier Pro? As I have understood ACR is very powerful to recover details in the images, would it make sense to use ACR for debayer and highligt rec etc. and then continue in resolve? Would it be best to stay with the raw files the whole way or would you recommend DNxHD? I also don't see you mentioning Cinelog in this workflow. Maybe you think that was obvious, but would be great to hear how to integrate it in the work flow proposed.

Well, you where very active in the 50D thread, supportive and always fast with a knowledge answer, so even if you did not work on the build except building it your contribution was very much appreciated.

Hi Andy.

After two years lurking in the 50d raw forum thread, that then sadly got closed down with the Tragic Lantern issue/dispute, effectively killing the 50D thread here on the forum, I will finally get going with my 50D.

I highly appreciate all the hard work you have done both for 50D and with this Cinelog as well. I really want the best possible picture when it comes to noise, DR, upscaling and debayering (and anything else that I missed).

I could buy the Cinelog package just as a thanks for all your hard work, but of course I hope it to help me get the best out of my camera. And that is indeed my question. How can I post process my 50D raw(MLRaw) files in the best possible way for 1080P? If I would need to buy Cinelog before you answer I can of course do so. Since I have not chosen my work flow yet, please give me the one that you think is best, and I will get the programs necessary.

Best Regards, Tullen

Hi.

I have been thinking about the possibility to add a speedbooster to my 50d. It goes something like this. Take out the optical glass of a speedbooster, see video below, fix a permanent mirror lock so the mirror stay out of the way, place the optics from the speedbooster in the camera (between the lens and the sensor with the same distance as it would have had with a speedbooster on a mirrorless camera).

Since I do not have a speedbooster at hand I do not know if the optical glass would fit in the square hole in the camera without modification, but I put together this overlay picture that suggest it would (sorry it looks like crap, could not find perfect pictures to work with).

I know they are not perfectly overlayed, but decided to put the circle in the middle instead of align the picture since they are taken from different angles.

What do you think? Would this be possible? Maybe a way to make crop mode more useful, or just get the FF field of view.
Curious to hear your thoughts.

Cheers, Tullen

Hi everyone.
I wonder what the latest is regarding using 50d with a field monitor when recording raw.

1. Does it work with both hdmi and avi (if that's the name for analog)?
2. Does it show overlay?
3. Does it impact performance?
4. What is the output resolution? The same as you film, 1080p/I or something else?
5. Is there anything else important to know about field monitors and 50d?

If you use one, which one and how?

Thanks!

Still wondering about this. Nobody have any idea? Also wonder if usb/tablet is an option when recording raw?
Cheers.

OK, thanks! So I think I should order a 1050x 128GB Komputerbay CF card today...

What about my other question - does the 50D has a RAW video (or MLV) playback module?

I would be careful before ordering the 128 GB card. There has been a lot of reports on bad speeds on these. Make sure you read at least some of the threads that discuss this before you order. I went for two 64 GB cards just to be safe.
