General Development / Re: 600D Audio Controls?
June 30, 2012, 05:40:09 PM
What is holding back headphone? Registers are changed and chip does nothing? Any way to reset the audio chip... maybe it only  reads registers at start? It seems we have some control through the regular canon menus in manual... just I can't monitor and that makes audio REALLY useless.  Any way to  help on this? Log something... do tests, etc?

The 15 minute test flipped around LV and movie mode a lot and nothing broke. I got scared for my shutter. Must be a 500D/60D thing.  Maybe we can ask if anyone besides 500d and 60D users have had trouble with it? None of my settings ever go to default with false movie mode... i change them in this mode and they stay in canon movie mode and vice versa.

Menu looks ok.
Battery level doesn't work on 600d?

No problems with auto ISO limits either but I've stopped using auto in movie mode as its a bit impractical and showed 0 for the ISO most of the time. I use 80-2500 as that is the "usable" range. Maybe 1250 even as the 2500 gets noisy.

*Picture style controls (same controls as with Canon menu) - Use this for convenience... hunting through the canon menus for anything is a PITA on 600D. Once I set it to neutral though not much changing.
*Silent pics - advanced modes - Works well... why change it.
*Sticky DOF preview / HalfShutter - I can see the DOF preview being usefull if you want to hold the aperture shut for some reason but never used anything but HS w/ Trap Focus. Maybe keep half shutter just in case?
*Flash / NoFlash - in any real mode I don't think the camera opens the flash by itself. The only reason for me to use this is prevent flash from popping up.
*Mirror lockup sync'ed with self timer - Didn't know this existed but I think I used it on accident when I flipped to 2s timer. Produced very stable shots at low shutters and I was wondering why... now I knows.
*From Display menu: image position, orientation, upside-down mode- Never used this as we don't use DOF adapters on SLR.
*Follow focus with LCD sensor-- sounds neat but not possible on 600D.
Image effects (MOVIE menu) - I think nobody in their right mind will use this but it hurts nothing.

What can I say... I like features. Can deal with a little instability... others maybe not so much.

General Help Q&A / Re: Movie mode remap (problems)
June 29, 2012, 04:55:39 PM
Ran 15 minute test last night and had no problems. Too bad it breaks 60D + other cameras. I've done everything in a-dep movie mode and never noticed a difference.

Useless features... I dunno. Flash light: my screen just turns white and gives off less light than my phone :)

Its a picture style with a modified curve, supposedly to give more dynamic range. For me it just screws up the blacks and makes it harder to post.

I've yet to do that. The worst I've done is to crank the bit rate and lose all camera control. Can't turn it off, no more ML menu, no buttons work, but screen keeps updating.  No difference between instant movie mode and delayed movie mode on 600D. 60D must be different.

Clip 2 movies together so that the camera plays them. The camera "saw" my 8gb file on exfat and even had the first frame on the screen... same with smaller movies stream cut together. Just wouldn't play it back.

I can take a pic of the debug menu with phone/400d, etc. Maybe run a little bit more of quick test... that got memory down to the lowest.

After all this memory stuff (both exmem and new) movie mode seems more stable... I don't get as many stopped recording errors even on 1250+ with 1.4-1.9x rates. Used to crash often on the first start... I think someone had an issue open on this but it was inconclusive.

I've tried to join files with mpeg streamclip... it says cannot play back movie and shows icon of the first frame. It did see the 8gb file and also the 600mb one but same result.

Running the stability test... right now too... I'll see what happens. I wanna say i liked the other memory setup more but it screws the in camera NR people.

*The tests drained my battery but didn't see any errors. Lowest the memory got was 922k.

I have to compile it and try it. I kinda wanted to keep the memory so I was waiting to see what happened. Also the movie mode+LV remap, I've had no problems with these functions on 600D.

As for noise reductions when I go to change them from the custom function no error 70. When I turn on strong reduction it shows BUSY on the screen and VF and I can't take a photo. Everything else is fine. Behavior repeats in JPEG mode. Also, I've NEVER reset my settings and run the 1.0.2 on 1.0.1 :)

**** Ok I get 334K/1053K... only 991K in movie mode.... after a few switches around 950K
See the new LV to Movie is a bit slower. That's about it so far. Was this how it was done on 550D?

The only benefit I see from an MJPEG mode or other image sequence is higher than 1080P recording.

I just tried to duplicate your error and cannot. I've tried from P, M, TV. I've had no problems with either the remap or increased/moved memory. In fact this seems like the fastest and most stable build yet.

The zoom on AF point has been driving me nuts tho. It zooms on that point even when I turn it off and the point doesn't flash.

Without remap on 600D movie mode is waaaaaaaaaaaay too far from any normal shooting modes. I have to turn through 8 useless modes before getting to movie.

Got a link to one? I throw everything in post and like the higher bit rate files. I've dealt with a lot of HDV footage and the low/default bit rates look a little worse while the higher stuff seems to look more detailed. I see a difference on the bike shot in the wiki too. Its very subjective and final footage will be much lower/more compressed anyway.

Would be nice to test on green screen with motion blur.

Look for anything other than cinestyle. There is Flaaat and the other one... at the minimum just go to neutral, turn off sharpening and drop contrast + saturation a little.

Cinestyle is more or less for inter cutting with film.  Using it regularly will just give you headaches and cause banding + other problems. I actually had less latitude in post before the footage broke up trying to squeeze out more dynamic range with these picture styles. The new consensus is that they make things worse.

If you're getting good results its because you're converting to cineform which expands the color space to 4:2:2/4:4:4 upon conversion. ProRes or DNxHD will work too.... as stated.

Default bitrate is very low. Like ~45... Seems a decent balance is 60-70.. in the high 70s/80s the camera runs out of buffer often. Also, ISO affects your bit rate so 1.8x may not work all the time. I leave it around 1.4 so I can shoot higher ISOs and scenes with more motion without any unexpected crashes. In a controlled environment you can set it higher... in darker scenes you can set it higher and at 80 ISO you can set whatever you want because I had no problems even at 3.0x

The 40s look not much better than an HDV camcorder.. the 60s+ look very good indeed.

I compile binaries for 600D and sometimes unified whenever I see changes.

Just don't brix your camera :)

Strange... I can play back any bitrate on 600D. Never had this issue.

General Help Q&A / SDHC -> exFat
June 27, 2012, 11:37:47 PM

So I formatted my SDHC to exFat via win7. So far so good and performance seems a tiny bit improved.

What I'm wondering is if there is any truth to the SD format utility and them saying that built in format is wrong and will cause performance loss? All I notice is that allocation size is 32kb on both Fat32 and exFat but windows default is something else. I kept it 32kb. No lost performance that I can see.

Does the SD formatter do ANYTHING else? Will camera internally format SDHC as fat32? I know the SD utility does and won't let you pick exFat.

What are your experiences?

Also if you stream join 2 4gb MOV files will the built in player play the whole thing? I can only stream cut to AVI or MP4 so I haven't been able to try it.
