For the first time in years I shot some dual iso pics again just to find out that I don't have cr2hdr on my machine any more. Tried to grab it from Bitbucket but - surprise - Bitbucket seems to have been bought out and the ML repo doesn't seem to be accessible any more... Does anybody happen to have some recent source files of cr2hdr anywhere?

General Help Q&A / 7D shutter speed - 1/48 vs. 1/50
April 12, 2018, 10:06:35 PM
I noticed a very odd thing with my shutter speeds in LV mode. While the top LCD shows 1/50, ML actually shows 1/48 on the monitor. I have filmed in a location with very bad CFL tubes and I did get vertical moving artifacts, suggesting that I really was shooting with 1/48. Next lower would be 1/41 and next higher would be 1/62 according to ML. Video mode was set to 1080p25.
Is this a quirk in the 7D Canon fw or is that an ML quirk

So, I finally dared to use ML in real production - not on my 6D, though, but on my 7D, and I'm quite happy with the image quality! Thanks to MLV Producer, converting MLV to CDNG was done very easily.

Now, the correction and grading... At the moment I use REC709 as input color space in the project/camera raw settings. Would there be any advantage to using another setting, e.g. BMD Film?

When exporting to CDNG, the chosen export color space on MLVP doesn't really seem to make a big difference.

General Help Q&A / Some 7D questions
February 14, 2016, 07:28:08 AM
Morning!

I recently got a 7D and I'm planning to use it with ML for video and photography, mainly wildlife. I have a handful of old 8, 4 and 2 GB cards and already successfully upgraded the camera FW and installed ML on a card. So far so good.
Now, what's the biggest size card the 7D can handle? Any recommendations for cards for MLV?
Any caveats for shooting video with the 7D? On a quick research I read something about overheating?
And then a less ML-related question: I already did some photography with the 7D and compared to my 6D, the raw pics look a bit washed out and less sharp out of camera. I'm using darktable on Linux for developing my raw pics and for the pics from my 6D I rarely need to apply any big expo or contrast correction, especially when using ML AETTR. The 7D pics I shot all required pretty strong modifications of black point, expo and cranking up the sharpening a lot.

Finnish MP O-P Parviainen invites people to meet him for a coffee and discuss politics. I didn't want to do a super bland boring clip, so I tried an aggressive grade, among others with quite kicked up eye color. Customer liked it, viewers (especially female) liked it...

Shot on EOS 6D w/ 24-105 IS L f/4, h.264, Cinestyle, ML functions used: Zebras, peaking
Additional gear: Cheap "Hakutatz" glidecam, Aputure Al-528W light

Hi,

one of the reasons why I don't use MLV that often yet is that with my 24-105 f/4 L IS I have really lots of chromatic aberrations. The worst is water and sunlight but also many other scenes in the nature are prone to it. When shooting h.264 with my 6D, the camera seems to process the aberrations out but in MLV they are really massively visible and ugly. How do you deal with those? Do you just ignore them or do you have a workflow to remove them in post? Maybe some Resolve plugin?

General Help Q&A / Screen recording?
October 15, 2015, 02:42:05 PM
Hi,

I know, there's a screenshot function in ML but is there also a screen recording function? That would be kinda cool for doing tutorials and maybe as a plot device in films.

Here's the teaser for my second wolf doc. The film was shot on a 6D with 24-105 f/4 L IS, h.264, Marvel profile (eeks, never gonna use that again!). Didn't dare to use MLV because I had some dropped frame issues on a test project before, so ML was mainly used for all the global draw goodies, like zebras, focus assist, histograms, etc.
Workflow: Camera h.264 -> Prores -> DaVinci Resolve 12
I also did the whole edit in DR12 and I like it. I guess, I have done my last project with kdenlive...

Here's a few BTS pics from my doc shooting in July. Again didn't dare to shoot video in ML raw, which I regret badly because some interviews have bad exposure/dynamic range issues now. But also again ML was a major help for the film shoot and especially the photos :). More BTS pics here: http://stefan.gofferje.net/film/bts/event/tjs2

Hi,

from 20. till 26.7. we are in Germany to make our second wolf film. Most of the time, we'll be in Dörverden and on 24.7. we are in the Wildpark Lüneburger Heide. We also would like to do a specific photoshoot and are looking for somebody who would be interested in cooperating with us, particularly who would be interested in borrowing us a long Canon tele for the shoot. We can't offer much money but we can offer cooperation, e.g. on 24.7. the person could come with us to the wolves and use the opportunities to do their own little shoot. You could reply here or to stefan at susilauma point fi. I do speak also German.

Thanks to Danne, I have a working script to batch-convert MLV-files to Prores with ffmpeg. The result is pretty REC709-ish which does leave some room for correcting and grading but I'd prefer a little flatter image. I tried using MLRawViewer's LUTs for C-log, SLog, etc. but those are 1D LUTs and ffmpeg only works with 3D LUTs.
Does anyone know some good (free?) 3D LUTs for MLV -> Prores conversion? Or maybe somebody could spend a few mins and convert the MLRawViewer 1D LUTs to 3D?

General Help Q&A / Reset battery chip?

Hi,

Raw Video Postprocessing / ffmpeg on Linux
February 09, 2015, 01:22:07 PM
So the ffmpeg developers have fixed the segfault bug after I reported it. Transcoding MLV does work now. However, I'm a bit irritated about the result. The image is very dark and greenish. If I push the levels up I get really bad banding. MLRawViewer shows the same file perfectly with no banding (but export doesn't work...)

General Help Q&A / False color / green screen
February 05, 2015, 07:12:30 PM
Hi,

I have discovered the false color function and I love it! It's a huge help, especially for even lighting of chroma key backdrops. I am however puzzled by the green screen palette. I never get a green screen. The only thing I get is more or less even gray and when I change the exposure I get green edges at some grey fields. The display of the palette in the menu, however, looks like the display should actually be green when the backdrop is evenly lit and optimally exposed.
I even tried switching to Marshall palette, play with lights and exposure settings until the whole backdrop was medium gray with small green and orange areas at the border. Then I switched to the green screen palette and again everything was evenly gray except the boders to areas which were orange or green in the Marshall palette. Those borders had pretty exactly the tone of the backdrop. They actually changed tone as I changed the exposure settings. Now I'm confused...

Could somebody please explain this palette to me or point me to a good explanation? :)

Raw Video Postprocessing / Linux love?
February 04, 2015, 08:38:31 PM
Hi,

so I looked at RAW again after several months of doing other stuff and it's still rather hard. I installed the latest ffmpeg static for Ubuntu 14.04 from ppa:mc3man/trusty-media and guess what... when I try to convert an MLV into anything else, it segfaults. The fuse-based MLVFS works like a charm and I now have a whole ton of DNGs. Which I can't do anything with because again, ffmpeg does not read DNGs, so no way to convert it to something editable like ProRes or so.
Does ANYbody here works regularly on Linux, preferably Ubuntu, and has a preferably simple solution on how to convert MLVs into something I can use with kdenlive or similar?

Share Your Videos / The girl and the wolves
September 05, 2014, 08:36:00 PM
I have been shooting for a provocative documentary in the German Wolfcenter. Title is "Tyttö ja sudet" - "The girl and the wolves". Subtitle "Mitä tapahtuu kun ihan tavallinen maalaistyttö heitetään susille?" - "What happens if a normal countryside girl is thrown to the wolves?".

I'm editing my fingers bloody at the moment, trying to get a good story together and fix some mistakes I made during shooting (that's my very first movie project)... Shot on a 6D with the EF 24-105mm L f/4 IS, mainly in h.264 All-I with Cinestyle profile and a Gopro Hero 3+ with ProTune. ML was vastly helpful with exposure judgement in the wolf-enclosure (vegetation!).
Before post, I avconv'd the whole footage to ProRes 422 HQ. Editing is exclusively done with KDEnLive on Linux.

Here's a trailer:

The doc itself still needs to be color corrected and subtitled. Might take another 3 weeks or so before it's ready.

General Help Q&A / 6D: Chroma keying
September 01, 2014, 05:09:56 PM
Hi,

I'm starting to get gray hair over my attempts to greenscreen. No matter what I do and how I set the lighting, I always have mushy transitions between skin tones and the green screen, resulting in spill. I also tried different color profiles - Cinestyle giving the worst results. I also noticed a ton of noise in my image, although my scene is well lit on the border to being overexposed.
Is there something like high light noise? I'm currently shooting in 1080P high.

Hi,

I noticed something odd. When I connect an external monitor via HDMI, I cannot switch off the cropmarks. Well - I can switch them off, but they don't disappear. On the other hand, the magic zoom doesn't work on an HDMI display. It just doesn't appear. When I pull the plug, it will appear on the internal monitor.

General Chat / EOS 6D - Dots in video mode

Anybody else has something like that? What can it be? It seems to just have appeared - at least I didn't notice it before.

Hi,

I'm slowly getting settled with all the new stuff around my 6D and my new video workstation. One thing I was wondering about is that my shiny new workstation seems to have more problems with real time processing of h264 in KDEnLive than my shabby old Phenom2X3.

Anyways, for the moment, I settled on DNxHD as intermediate format and I knitted some bash scripts which will suck h264 (and hopefully MLV if I ever get it to work) from the card and convert it to DNxHD on the fly. Mid August comes my first project - travelling to Germany and shooting a short doc about the Wolfcenter.

Question:
What would be your recommendation for subtitles? I have a translation genius who lives 600km away from me. What we need is some kind of a visual sub editor, preferably open source, which produces a format which can either directly be exchanged with others on production quality level or be converted into a common production format.
At first glance, Aegisub looks really good as far as the workflow for the translator goes. But I'm not sure if I can actually do something with the "advanced substation alpha" subtitle format...

General Help Q&A / 6D, ETTR + dual ISO
July 27, 2014, 05:57:36 PM
Hi,

I'm currently trying to learn by doing and so I went out today to play with ETTR and dual ISO. I have tried dual ISO a few days ago and it worked pretty nicely although I didn't see huge advantages. Well, I'm no experienced digital photographer (yet) :). With ETTR, however, I found some problems. After pushing all CR2s through cr2hdr as usual, I opened the DNGs in darktable and found all shots that were done by the ETTR module in autosnap mode way too dark. Some had a significant magenta or green tint.
I was shooting in "P", with ISO originally set to 100. Dual ISO was set to +4. Now I'm wondering if it was some operator's mistake or if there's an issue with the ETTR module on the 6D. As far as I understand, image done with ETTR shoudl appear too bright, i.e. overexposed, rather than too dark.
While shooting I noticed that ETTR was often doing multiple shots and it fairly often said "ETTR giving up" on the preview screen.

Hi!

As hinted in my introduction, I'm in the market for a new camera. I mostly take photos still on film with my EOS 300 and my ages old fully manual Braun camera, although I do have an IXUS (with CHDK) lying around.
I also take lots of videos and have several sports cams (including GoPro) and "wing cameras" flying around which I mainly use with my UAVs. Sometimes I also velcro one of those to a cap on forest walks.

Now I want to step up the video-quality quite a bit and if the camera as a side effect can also take nice quality stills, even better.
To be honest, I'm not even sure what I want. Well - yeah - I want good quality video - and raw material with which I can do something creative (ever tried to do even little color improvement on h264 from a cheap UAV cam?).
One of my big loves are wolves (of which we have a handful in Finland) and also my dogs. And I'm a weather-nut (and stormchaser). I definitely want to shoot some nice footage of there.
My main problem is that I haven't followed the development in either the photo or the video industry for about 20 years, so I'm clueless as of what features are common and what camera to buy... But ok, first things first...:

My budget is roughly €1500 +/- something.
I primarily want to shoot 1080p video but if the camera can do photos, it's a welcome plus
Ideally, the camera has a form factor that would allow me to hang it under a medium multirotor and fly more than 3 minutes with that. Medium means either my existing 70cm quad or maybe a hex which I might build but I don't want to have a 15kg, 1m octo-monster.
But the copter thing is no must. More like a "nice to have".
I don't have Windows and I won't buy/install Windows. Means - Things need to work in Linux, ideally with kdenlive.
I do have a bit of EF-glass, so if I could re-use that, I (read: my budget) would be very happy.
Raw format output (for video) would be cool, especially as I like to play around and do stuff like the "CSI:Miami-look", however, I also need to be able to do something with it, so some converter which runs on Linux or a kdenlive-plugin would be a prerequisite - preferably a converter which doesn't fill up the disk with single images 3 times the size of the raw clip.

I have been looking at the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, but - although tempting - this thing is very scary with regards to all the possibilities and features and due to the fact that I'm an enthusiastic amateur at best. And it seems that to get a usable system I would have to invest about twice as much as my budget is for things like adapter rings, batteries, etc.

The EOS-M looks very interesting to me at first glance, maybe with an EF-M adapter ring?

Well, bottom line - I stumbled over Magic Lantern and as I have already some Canon stuff, I thought, maybe I find a good solution for me here...

User Introduction / Hi from Finland
May 13, 2014, 08:27:00 PM
Hi,

I'm a 40-something years old German, living in Finland for something like 7 years. Hobbies are many - relevant here are probably photography, videography and UAVs.
I still take photos on film (Canon EOS 300 and a Braun fully manual camera) and I'm up to buy a new camera - that's why I'm here.
I'm a 17+ years Linux user and officially Windows-free since 2005.

-Stefan

Edit:
Forgot: I actually have an IXUS 750 with CHDK lying around here.
