General Help Q&A / DryOs vs MSDOS vs Android OS vs IOS
August 03, 2012, 08:04:14 AM
If we had to compare Canon's DryOS with MsDOS or the Android OS or IOS what would the comparison look like or are Android and IOS far to advanced to be compared with DryOS which is more MsDOS.
Is is possible to run the Android OS on a Digic 5 + processor or does the DIGIC 5 + not have the horsepower to run a real OS.
Is the processor the reason why no camera runs on Android or Windows 8 or is it battery life.
Would the code that amplifies ISO, computes white balance, figures out focus, converts the raw image into a jpeg etc be too slow to run on processors used in  mobile phones  or does all this code need to be hardwired for speed.

Archived porting threads / Re: Canon 5D Mark III

JohnN , just my point.

I have written code in ObjectiveC for the iPad/iPhone and Java for the Android to enhance their photography features. It simply takes too long and takes a lot of effort. Just not worth it. These phones are not optimized for programmers using the camera.  I can do much more using LUA and the CHDK.

Nearly all the photographers that I meet in india and I meet a lot of them do not believe that technology can play a big role in what they do. They see their role in just being creative and they want no part either in post production like Photoshop or in the printing process. In fact a lot of advice that I read on the Net applies to film and not digital.

The Phone ecosystem of writing Apps did not exist till Apple allowed us to extend the phone and see what it did for Apples fortunes . When will the camera companies wake up and create a ecosystem that allows all of us to extend the cameras. I am surprised that the success of CHDK and ML has not opened their eyes.

By the way, most of the top 10 cameras companies are Japanese.

I just used Paypal to make a contribution of $50 + $150 to Magic Lantern.

I would like to place on record that I am not doing anyone a favor, Alex and his team at ML are doing all of us a favor by allowing us to do with our Canon cameras what Canon does not want us to do. I do not understand why it is only in the camera ecosystem where everything is so closed. I also do not understand why the camera companies are not learning from the Computer/Mobile world on opening up their systems.

I may never use ML to take professional photographs, for me what is most important is using ML to understand the internals of a camera. DryOS brings back the good old days of MS-DOS which allowed you to get into the internals of computers. That makes me very old.

I live in Mumbai , India and if Alex and his ML team are ever in this part of the world, it would be an honor for me to buy them lunch or dinner at place of their choice.

I am willing to contribute $200 by Paypal in buying a Canon 5D Mark III. This way if only 20 of us chip in, we can all lay our hands on a working copy of ML faster.

What do the others think.

A very big thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone for writing Magic Lantern, it works like a charm, version 2.3 is what I am using.

I own a Canon 550 D and the first time I tried to install it nothing worked even though the Firmware version numbers matched. I then remember reading your FAQ that says that only the part of the Firmware version is displayed. I then upgraded the Firmware and everything worked as advertised. One of the easiest installations I have ever seen in my long life.

I also own a Canon G1 X on which I tried to install the CHDK for Firmware version 1.00G. I use a iMac as my primary machine and for some reason I could not get CHDK working. The kind folks on the CHDK mailing list spoke about the issues you would face if you used a Mac. The Apple Mac for security reasons adds an extended attribute which is a @ sign to binaries downloaded from the web. Because of this extended attribute , the G1 X would not load the CHDK. I removed the extended attribute from the files and now CHDK works as a charm on both my G1 X and the A 800.

My doubt is that if all new Canon cameras use DryOS then why did ML run on my 550 D. I checked the ML files on the SD card and I yet see the extended attributes on all the files on the SD card. Is this got something which is unique to the EOS family.

How long would it take for Ml to be ported on the Canon 5D Mark III. There are various reports on the Internet , but what is the official word from the people writing the port.

I am based in Mumbai, India and I am learning about the technology used in the camera ecosystem which includes learning how to convert Raw files into JPEG's using C code. Both ML and CHDK are just what the doctor ordered for me.

Thanks once again.

Thanks for the reply.

I was looking at purchasing the 550d to run ML and the G1 X to run CHDK.

I am a teacher of technology. These days I spend all my time understanding the role of technology in the photography ecosystem which includes cameras at one end and tools like Photoshop and the internals of raw files at the other. I am deciding whether to purchase the G1 X and install CHDK or buy the 550 D or better and use ML. For me ML has come as a god sent opportunity to understand the internals of camera functionality. You guys would get my vote for the Nobel prize if I had a vote, which I unfortunetely not have.

What would in your view be the best EOS based camera to understand the functioning of cameras from the ML perspective as I plan to create lots of e-Learning material on the technology-Photography ecosystem.
