The major difference between RAW and MLV is that MLV supports audio as well as the Video.  Otherwise I think the quality is identical.  Both are RAW.  MLV is Magic Lantern's own RAW codec.  So if you always do separate audio and don't need a sync beep on the video to sync your audio up, then RAW is perfect.

I agree. My one caveat about using MLV Raw is it is a new codec. I prefer a codec that is established, if MLV Raw gets discontinued, you may end up with files you can't use later on.  I'm sure it will be around for a while, but I've been burned a few times.

The ability to embed sound is great, but I don't mind using a slate and double system-ing it.

Anyone know what the last version of the nightly builds creates .raw files instead of .mlv files? I want to be able to use RAW Magic and not have to go through the extra step of converting everything to .raw first.

Thanks.

Just load the RAW module and turn off MLV Raw. I use RAWMagic all the time, it automatically recognizes spanned clips. It is great.

Having trouble deleting MLV files after playing them back in camera , I am using the mlv_play menu to delete it,but nothing not exit the play menu or go to another clip, Then an error pops up, Deleting 'A:DCIM/100EOS5D/M29-2131.MLV' failed, retrying...
Any idea anyone.
thanks.

I've had success just hitting the default delete button on the back of the 5D mark iii.

The nightly build is running smooth. I don't consider it bleeding edge anymore, not for a while now, anyway.

Excellent work.

The only thing I've encountered was a file that would not play in MLRAWViewer even though it was showing a file size of around 2.8GB. I processed it in RawMagic (which by the way automatically detects spanned clips now! Excellent!), and even though RawMagic couldn't see the FPS as 23.976, it still processed it to CinemaDNG and I was able to open it fine in After Effects as a RAW sequence. I don't know why MLRAWViewer couldn't play it back but in the end it worked.

So far no dropped frames, no green noise or pink dots here on my 5D Mark iii running the latest 1.2.3 build of 2014-06-21.

been contemplating giving ML a try for some time now.

i've read that audio doesn't work, how can i get around this ? I do not own an external recorder. also are you still able to take pictures with ML installed ?

i'll probably give it a try this weekend once i get all my questions answered. I'll ask more as i think of em, and i'll attempt to use the search feature to find some more answers..

I shoot stills all the time with the latest build. No problems.

unfilmde, you get menus on the 5D mk3 LCD and TRUE CLEAN 1080P output???????

No, I get clean out through the HDMI but no menus on the external monitor as it is CLEAN OUT. I get the ML menus on the canon built in monitor.

It is clean but not 1920x1080

I get clean 1920x1080.

you need to enable mirroring but it's broken in magic lantern right now

I have had no issues getting clean RAW picture out the HDMI with the latest nightly build.

Just wanted to add after playing around with Nightly build 5-23-2014 on my 5D Mark iii....

WOW!!!

I underexposed a lot on purpose. ISO 640 (my test show this to be native with my camera). Shot under tungsten lighting. I was able to bring back the image and remove the warm cast and the image was beautiful.

Audio meters only appear when you are prepared to record some kind of sound (H.264 or mlv_snd). Should be obvious.

A1ex,  it should be obvious, but they were there in the last build with the settings I had when set to RAW record. I understand it should be obvious. I was just curious why they went away. You can't record RAW and have MLV_SND on or you enter an ERR loop.

I prefer to shoot RAW as MLV_Raw my one day disappear and so go the files.
#36
Well I narrowed down the audio meter disappearance. If I do a clean install of the latest nightly build 5-20 for the 5D Mark iii they show up. It is when I enable RAW record and setting the frame size to 1920x1080, leaving MLV rec off of course, the audio meters disappear and are replaced with bars, (see picture).

When I turn RAW recording off, they come back again.

This didn't happen in the previous builds.

Everything's OK for me on 5D mk III

Maybe I uninstalled it incorrectly. I ran the firmware update and made the SD card not bootable. Trashed the old files on the card, copied the new files to the card and then ran the firmware update again.

Is there a switch or setting I may have inadvertently turned off?

I can't figure this one out. This is the first time I'm having trouble with a nightly build.  The audio meters just don't show up.

Audio meters disappear in nightly build 2014-05-20 15:00:53 -0700. for the 5D Mark iii.

I ran the firmware update to undo the boot flag, restarted the camera and ran the firmware update to the latest build and no more audio meters on the preview screen in Live view in video mode.

Am I missing something?

Well, took the plunge and installing the latest build of 5D Mark iii 1.2.3 could not have been easier. I installed to a 32GB SanDisk Extreme SDHC card for ML only.

Two quick questions:

1. When shooting raw, what should the picture style be set to? In the past when I shot h.264 I used Technicolor's CineStyle. Does it matter now? I assume nothing is baked in because I am shooting raw... Color Balance, Picture style, etc. Or does it make a difference?

2. Is there a complete manual or PDF floating around that goes over each and every setting? If not has someone started one that I can update and finish?

TIA,

Great work!

ML for 5D3.123 comes along with an installer. No need to run those tools. Read first page of this thread, first post.

Walter,

I have read the first post many times. It is not clear. When I unstuff the zip file there is an autoexec.bin, a folder ML and ML5D3123.FIR which is the firmware.

Are you saying when the files are copied to the SD card and the card is inserted into the 5D Miii, the camera will automatically see the autoexec.bin and run as an installer?

Being new to this, what is obvious to you is not to me.

TIA!

First page, first entry.

So just copying the files to the SD cards makes the SD card bootable?
#42
I'm new to ML so bear with me. I am on the Mac platform. Can someone direct me to a link that explains how to go about installing the latest version of ML for the 5D Mark iii firmware version 1.2.3?

The way I'd like to work is purchase an SD card for the Magic Lantern Software and record to a CF card (I guess letting the camera format the CF card). When I want to shoot still with Canon's 1.2.3 firmware, I'd like to be able to remove the SD card.

Do I simply format the SD card in camera, then mount on my Mac and copy all the files to it. Then run the firmware update to ML 1.2.3?

Do I need to make the SD card bootable or is this automatic?

So I'm looking for explicit instruction for ML 1.2.3 NOT ML 1.1.3.

I hope I am clear and making sense and thank you in advance or TIA!

@rpt

Thanks!

Thought I'd post again.

Can the ML 1.2.3 be on a separate SD card and not the CF card you are shooting to, or does the ML firmware have to be on the shooting CF card. If it can be a separate SD card is there a speed requirement for the SD card?

Is there somewhere I can find out this information?

It's out!

Installation:
1) Format the card from the camera.
2) Make sure you are running Canon firmware 1.2.3.
3) Copy ML files on the card and run Firmware Update.

Can this be a separate SD card and not the CF card you are shooting to, or does the ML firmware have to be on the shooting CF card. If it can be a separate SD card is there a speed requirement for the SD card?
