Once my 5D is plugged with the mini-usb cable, I face the bug
- when I push Rec/stop on the camera
- when I push Rec/stop on my laptop (Canon Utility)
- when I push Rec/stop on my Ronin-S

The bug appears when the camera is "remoted" through the miniUSB cable. I suspect a problem with the "Rec Trigger" fonction on mlv-lite, but it's my intuition, I can't prove it.
you can read what Alex (Magic Lantern) says about the bug:

I don't get this error often. Most of the time it works ok (when cable is inserted).

But when I got an error, I:
- Turn off the camera
- Turn off Ronin (only control section, no need to reboot battery).
- Turn on Ronin
- Turn on camera in photo mode
- Switch to video mode

If I turn the camera on in Video Live view mode after error - the error most of the times is still there.

Hi, again

Yesterday at night I've got an Error, but voke up in the morning, didn't change any settings and the Error disappeared.
Please, see the video with different settings:

For 6 minutes of video, I couldn't get an error. So, it actually can work.
Later I've managed to get an error, but I didn't change Canon or ML settings. I was only changing Exposure, WB etc. Starting/stopping recording. The reason of an Error is not obvious for me yet.

Hi Tom,

I've checked your settings and to be short - YES, I also have this ERROR!

I need to check more with different settings to find out the consistent pattern of this bug to report for developers.
I've also found out, that my Start Recording lag appears only when Proxy is enabled.

As you said in PM, if you have the same problem with connecting 5D to laptop with a USB cable for a remote with the CANON UTILITY app - this is definitely a ML bug, not a Ronin. It's good, because theoretically we can try to get help here. Otherwise, DJI doesn't care about ML.

edit. You can use Start/Stop button on 5d3 without error, while using follow focus of Ronin with it's cable.

I didn't have enough time to check different settings (as there're a lot of variations), that's why I didn't answered in the topic yet. But I did check it with my current settings and I don't have any errors. So, it behaves exactly as in my video. Mostly ok, but with a Start Recording lag/bug. I have to push Start button on Ronin several times to start recording.

I don't think that the cable can be a reason of this error, as it is the same, only a different connector. The wires are the same, and there is no any electronics in these cables to give any reason for error.

If you need to find a solution ASAP - please send me all your settings and i'll try it on my setup. You can record a video of your ML menus and the steps how to get this error. It would be easier for me to replicate it.

p.s. I will check it on my 1.1.3 Canon firmware.

I like it and thought it was an effective use of Dutch tilt

Dutch tilt brings a really "creative geometry" in composition. It's great when done correctly.
But here we see a slight overall loss of a horizon level.

using Davinci Resolve with mlvfs and it works quite well.

What is the best workflow of mlvfs on a PC?

I normally do my color correction/grading in lightroom because that's what I know best, but recently started to tinker with resolve.....

At first I thought almost the same as you are. But then I've got to know Resolve better and I can assure you, that you can get almost identical color grading with Resolve, ACR/Lightroom, MLVApp.

To make it easier, I've made a reference color grading in ACR and then started to match it in Resolve (then also did the same with MLV App).
IMHO, the first thing is to choose Color Space: Blackmagic Design in Resolve's Camera Raw settings. I tried REC.709, but the colors are weird and it is really hard to match with that color space. So, for me, Color Space: Blackmagic Design - is a way to go.
Then, in Camera RAW check:
- WB
- Tint
- Exposure (even if it looks ok in ACR, in Davinci I always make +1.18-1.2 exposure). I think there is some difference in calibration.
- Sharpness: 10 - this is a default sharpness , if I'm not wrong, Resolve's 10 = 0 in other programs. If you change it to 0, you actually make it "minus". So 10 - is a good start.
- other settings can stay by default. You can get back to them anytime later (if you need).

Then, move to Color Wheels. You'll need to pump up some saturation, a little bit of contrast. Try to learn how "Nodes" work. All Curves windows, Qualifier, Windows (Masks), etc. It's not hard. Watch some tutorials on youtube.

Overall nice shots, but look too "HDRish" not in a good way. And there is a problem with horizon level in a lot of shots.

I won't invest in any external monitor and keep playing with the internal LCD then!

I don't have an ext.monitor, but I'd like to know:

When we use crop module with 50/60fps, our preview with overlays always with poor quality and lags. But, when we turn overlays off with "info" button - we can see regular Canon preview without lags and in color - but it is stretched. Can we enable anamorphic squeeze (on ext.monitor) to get right proportions?

Hi tom2,

I'm out of town for a few days, and I don't have access to my setup right now.

As I can see, we have different Canon firmware 1.1.3 vs 1.2.3, Ronin S firmware vs And as long as we don't now, what ML settings do you use - there're a lot of variations.
I did try 14bit lossless with 1920px, 2.35:1, with proxy enabled (if I remember correctly). In this scenario, I didn't have error messages.

I'm not a ML developer, just a user. But as soon as get a chance, I'll try to check with different settings.

I use 30/60 because computer monitors run at 60Hz and TV's play 30/60 just fine here in England.

What about light flickering? It is 50Hz in England.

When I was thinking about purchase of Ronin-S, I was worried about, how it will perform with my Canon 5d mark III running Magic Lantern. I've found in the manual, that Ronin was tested with 1.3.5 Canon firmware, but I'm still on 1.1.3 (because of ML).

My current setup: Canon 5d mark III (ver.: 1.1.3)  with Magic Lantern (experimental crop_rec build, published on 2018-07-22). Ronin-S firmware version: v1.7.0.60

To test follow focus features, I've decided to buy a simple Micro-to-Mini USB adapter (~ $1) and use it with included original MCC-to-MicroUSB cable.

Here is a video:
(Please, turn ON the subtitles to read my comments (press PAUSE if you need)! This video is for test purposes only, so don't judge the overall quality of it.)

When camera is disabled: follow focus blinks red LED
As soon as camera booted, we see the continuous green LED light.
When we reach the limit of a focus distance, we're getting the message on a screen.
The soft limits are on both sides.

After message is gone, the screen "reloads" the image, and we can see a focusing window for a second.

The lens' auto focus works not as usual. It makes loud clicks for each step.

Focus/record button.

It doesn't focus on a half press :/ (update: it works, I added info at the end of this message).

With a full push it should start a record. But it only goes to a black screen with overlays, and the record timer stays at 00:00
I've waited for a few minutes, but nothing changes.
So, to Start recording we need to press 3 times. With short delays between them.

Nevertheless, it stops recording with only one push. It's nice ))

Most of the times, it started recording after 3 pushes of the button.
But in some circumstances, it could start recording after the first push.

Small update: Auto focus actually WORKS on a half press. I forgot, that I use a back AF-ON button on my camera, and it is disabled on the main trigger button. So, the only problem with ML is Start recording on a 3-rd press. Without ML a recording starts as it supposed.

So, I hope I can confirm, that Ronin S works with Canon 5d mark III without ML, on an old firmware 1.1.3 with Micro-to-Mini USB adapter.
So, who wants, can actually buy a dedicated original cable MCC-MiniUSB.

What about DIGIC 6+ vs DIGIC 8,  CF bus vs SDXC UHS-II bus?

Is it comfortable to shoot handheld instead of a shoulder rig?

This question is directed more to ML developers then to R owners.
Is R have any potential advantages for ML video possibilities over 5d4, except eye tracking?

What monitor did you use?
What brands?
I need to know! :D :P

If you are on a budget, have a look at a Feelworld T7.

General Help Q&A / Re: Bit Rate help 5d mrk 3
« on: December 15, 2018, 09:43:09 PM »
export the files to the highest bit I can

You should export to that bitrate in which you were shooting. If it was 14bit - export to 14.  There is no need to export to the highest bit you can. If 14 bit exports to 16 bit - you're just wasting you hard disk space.

A1ex do you own a 5D IV? If not would it help if we buy one for you (as used prices are really cheap nowadays)?

Isn't it more interesting to invest in developing ML for EOS R? It is mostly the same as 5d4, but with more interesting photo and video features, like: eye tracking, rotated screen, separate video and photo settings, new processor, focus peaking, etc. And due to a new RF mount (fully backward compatible with EF) - more future proof modern camera..

I am a 60D Magic lantern user, and now it's time to upgrade to full frame.
Would you advise me, please. Since I am focusing on video.
Should I buy the M-IV and wait for Magic lantern, buy M-III, move to Mirrorless or wait for the next big thing?

If you want to start using ML now - buy 5d3.
If you can wait for some uncertain time (maybe a year or never) - then eos R is better choice, than 5d4 in my opinion.

masc, could you please share RAW DNG (only 1 frame is enough) of these frames:

I want to see, what information can be pushed from those highlights.  ;)

Nice shots, but sand and some other bright parts seem to be overexposed. It's too bright for my taste and has no details.

I love that I can quickly have a realtime preview in MLrawviewer, with a quick shortcut, works really well.

Does it support the new crop_rec modules from experimental page?

General Help Q&A / Re: help setting up 3.5k raw 10 bit please :)
« on: October 17, 2018, 11:11:51 AM »
I'm not using 10-12 bit mode.

My recommendation is to use 14-bit lossless compression instead of 10-12 bit without compression. Most of the time it will use less space than lower bitrate, but the quality is the same as 14 bit without compression. And with these settings you can go higher resolution, or higher fps.

Scroll down to 4K raw video recording; lossless compression or 10/12-bit RAW video
