I must say that's incredible. Such smooth motion. Do you have a starting point for making something like that? (You know like the blueprints!).

Primarily I want to make DIY a motorised slider/dolly system. I have some limited knowledge of electronics. But I am finding the engineering part the most difficult.

Interesting.

The fact that it wants to run chkdisk http://chkdskerrors.com/ suggests (as you have already said) that there is indeed some corruption of the disk. I am not sure how it would work with a CF card but it should be like running it on a normal hard disk.

I'm also not sure if, by default, it is set to try and repair corruption? I think it just checks it? I remember from DOS you have to give it the /f flag to fix. It might be worth trying to just run chkdisk. It might actually repair the disk but change the data and, in doing so, effectively corrupt  the data you are trying to recover. I am not really sure?

Basically, if you are going to run chkdsk on it, I would try to make the disk image backup before doing that. In that case you will still have a perfect copy of the original (with errors). My idea is to work from a backup of a disk then load that into a hex editor and start to analyse what you still have intact. Then you can work out how to get it out.

I am thinking once extracted you could even splice valid file headers in there if you need to. There are a few details that are mentioned in other threads about repairing RAW files and working out the hex values for frame numbers etc.

There's all sorts that can be done, but if you want to make sure it's safe you really could do with a disk image backup! (in my humble opinion anyway).

Anyway I am getting pretty tired ::) now so will be heading to bed pretty soon. If you need some more assistance with this just keep hold of the files and I will try to help you further (if I can of course!) :D

I was fiddling with my 500D all day yesterday and find it really difficult to use compared to my main camera (5DMKII). Adjusting the aperture and exposure is generally really tricky while using ML on the 500D.

So I would certainly welcome anything that helps. Would be much appreciated. :)

Do you have latest CUDA drivers installed?

I have:

CUDA Driver Version: 5.5.47

GPU Driver Version: 8.24.9 310.40.25f01

and do you have the GPU acceleration setup within After Effects and Premiere?

It made a difference to me when I edited the appropriate text files.

I have probably half the hardware specs that you have and must say that my performance is not excellent but it's usable.

This guy goes through a way of enabling the GPU acceleration:

You will get even less on a 64Mb (megabit) card (by a factor of 8 ) (if one existed that is!) :D

Love it.

Would also like to see some more details. Like what dolly system, time lapse controller etc. ?

Is it a professional (brand) one? if so how much? or is it DIY? and if so how did you make it?

(full instructions please!)

Is it possible to damage the Zoom H6 XY microphones if the loudnes of the sound is too much close to the device?

Possible but unlikely I would think. I mean if it was that damaging it would be ripping your ear drum apart wouldn't it?

I would suggest that you do a byte for byte copy (or disk image) of your card. This is not taking the contents of the card like when you copy files from A to B. It copies all of the information on the card. So files that you may not be able to 'see' will be copied (if they are still there). It's a good start if you want to recover stuff because then you can actually use hex editors to find file headers.

I am assuming that once the problem happened you didn't write anything more to the card?

I posted a way to recover dng files here http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=11220.msg109067#msg109067 but you should able to use a similar process to try and recover the RAW, MLV, CR2 (or whatever) file.

If you make an 'image' of your disk (CF/SD card) it will copy the entire contents of that disk, so will take up exactly the same space on your hard disk. Eg. 16GB, 64GB or whatever. It copies everything.

In many situations you will be able to recover all of the information and in other instances you will be able to achieve a partial recovery.

Let me know if you have problems with this; I may be able to help you further.

Audio dub the gunshot sound in post processing. There are gun sound effects around for free. My "two-cents" advice.

I totally agree. It, of course, depends on what kind of 'realism' you are looking for here. I think the sound recordings/fx used in Saving Private Ryan are excellent because they are well recorded and sound more real (IMHO).

Most hollywood films seem to use hyper gun sounds that don't seem to have any connection to the guns that are being fired. Often when you hear guns from real footage on the news the gunfire sounds very flat (and tame) compared to the movies.

Real or not, the sounds used in hollywood are effective in the dramatisation of events.

There's plenty of well recorded foley out there. It all depends on what kind of impact you want to make. Real or hyperreal.

Resolve is known to have such problems with footage from ML. Something to do with the debayer it uses. At the moment ACR 'gets on' with the footage much better. (IMHO)

@ elfrabo

Try this:

On Magic Lantern's Movie menu goto RAW (MLV) then go to the sub settings and find Fix black level turn it OFF

Then film something and see if you have the problem.

The older versions used to automatically add to the timeline. Now it seems that you always have to add it yourself.

Just thought that I would share this with people.

I managed to do this: -

1. Take some pictures on a freshly installed Magic Lantern card (silent pictures, dng format)

2. Use format from the camera and guess what? No files (other than ML files) appear on the card.

3. So I then have to 'recover' them obviously. So I had to find a way ::).

4. Using Disk Image from Applications/Utilities (OSX 10.9.2) I clicked on New Image with the card reader (with CF in it obviously!) device selected.

5. At the stage where where it asks what you want to save it as, I select entire device under the Image Format selection (Encryption - none).

6. It took ages for it to do a complete byte for byte copy of the device :-\.

7. Once completed, open the disk image using a hex editor (I used 0xED).

8. I had already analysed a DNG file of the same size as the one I was looking for ;) and the header contained the following: -

49492A00080000002500FE0004000100

9. So I did a hex search for that hex string ...

10. ... If they are there it will find them ::) ;).

11. Now the problem is to make a selection that matches the correct size of the file ???.

12. I had worked out the size of the hex selection from the DNG file that I had previously studied ;).

13. In this case I knew the selection size had to be 4596A8. So I made a selection of 4596A8 from the first hex value above (49).

14. The only part I didn't figure out :-\ is how to make that selection without dragging for ages (?) (I know stupid! :'().

15. Anyway ... once selected, I copied and then went to 0xED menu File > New and then paste.

16. Save file and give it a name like recovered_01.dng

17. I then checked the file and it opens up in Photoshop :). Recovered :D ;D.

That's it. :)

I am aware that there will be a number of ways of doing this and I am sure there are possibly easier options. I am also aware that the whole world don't use Mac's or hackintosh. All of the things that I have done there are possible on Windows and Linux etc.

There are plenty of tools to create byte for byte backups of cards and disks. Too many to mention. I can't remember, but I think something like Magic ISO would suffice (if I remember correctly?)

Also HEX editors are usually available for free for the public domain ;).

The point here is that where there is a will - there is usually a way. I am sure that it would be fairly easy (for someone with the coding skills) to make a recovery tool for such a situation but I am no coder so I have to 'find a way'.

I hope you can recover your files. Good luck.

Necessity is the mother of invention. ;D

Would it be an idea to take a clone of the memory card and work from that. You could maybe use a hex editor and search for dng header information. I am not sure if the DNG files have a footer, but I suppose there must be some way of knowing where the EOF is. Maybe someone with some more knowledge of the format can help?
#47
Looks very good. I was wondering if the the film will be in that resolution? I was thinking maybe it was something to do with the age of austerity? ;D
#48
I just thought that I would mention that to make sure all footage is imported at the same frame rate you can make this default setting from the Preferences.

To set it go to pull down menu:

After Effects > Preferences > Import...

Then in the Sequence Footage section set the frames per second.

This will import all of your footage at that frame rate as default without having to set it every time.

Also set default base frame rate for project:

File > Project Settings... Default Base:

I imagine that you don't have to many responses to this because most people will suggest using the search and reading posts on the forum to gather some knowledge of what you are using.

The only way to get those modes is in the 'cropped' (or 3x zoom) recording mode.
