Not so long ago the ETTR module disappeared for the 500D build. This was due (I think) to the new interface changes.

I find the ETTR module very useful and I also like the changes (improvements ;)) to the interface.

I use my 500D primarily for timelapse and ETTR is a great feature for this :).

I was wondering if someone could be good enough to compile a build for the 500D which includes the ETTR module?

Apparently, (and I will quote this) "The raw backend was not fully ported in photo mode on 500D"? :-\

So, seeing as I don't have a system setup to compile all this, and I am not even sure what I would have to do: -

I am asking (begging) that someone could please please please add the ETTR module back into the latest build for the 500D?

I apologise for the begging here :(

Thanks in advance for any help with this :)

I ran into a little problem. It involved how I would copy files across to my laptop on which the screen is broken. The laptop works fine but the screen is blank :(. I use Real VNC to access the laptop so I know it's still fully working (apart from the display of course ;)). Anyway.

You might think what is the relevance to all this? :-\ Well, like (probably) many other people, I want some portable way to offload/upload images and RAW captures from my card. I only have a 32GB CF and, as many people will know, it fills up pretty damn quickly with RAW video. So the only way to be able to capture more is backing up the card and liberating it of the captured data.

If my my laptop was operable, and I could see what I was doing on the screen, then I could just take my laptop out and offload/upload the images to it using the normal methods of selecting folders and copying them. But I can't :(.

At the moment I can't afford to be buying one of those expensive field CF backup devices and really I don't see why I need one (apart from the obvious convenience of course ;D).

So necessity is the mother of invention ;). I know on Windows you can use Autorun on your CF card to initiate processes and I believe automatically copying files using this method is possible. However on the Mac there was no apparent easy way of doing this ???. So I did a little research and found a way ;D. I thought that it might just be possible to do something like this using OS X's built in Automator. Indeed this is possible ;).

What was needed was to set up a 'Folder Action' that is initiated when there is a change to '/Volumes' (ie. when a USB volume was attached). It's set to listen for this and is looking for a folder '/Volumes/EOS_DIGITAL/DCIM/100EOS5D'. When this folder turns up the folder action starts to copy the contents of this folder (all files) to a folder designated within the script. I have defaulted this to Desktop. So after insertion of the CF card the copied folder '100EOS5D' will appear on the desktop. Obviously it will take some time for the files to backup (especially if its full) but once it's stopped writing you can eject the card and then put it back into the camera and continue filming.

For what I need this is perfect. Also people may just want it to use this so that everytime you insert the card the files are automatically copied to a location (that you can specify) on your Mac HD.

I will provide the little script here: https://mega.co.nz/#!9klnAY6b!FXFW22k9trOfiBfYbvIgaWrEQ4QbRfWWgrfQ3RudUpU

Unzip the file and then place it here:

[Macintosh HD]/Users/[username]/Library/Workflows/Applications/Folder Actions/

Then the folder action needs to be assosciated with '/Volumes'

For '/Volumes' the easiest way is to get a normal Finder window open and Press cmd+shift+g then type '/Volumes' (without quotes)

To be able to apply the folder action to '/Volumes' the only way (I found) is to access it in the path bar from Finder. So from the Finder pull down menu select 'View' > 'Show Path Bar'.

In the path within your Finder window you select Volumes and right mouse click on it and then 'Services' > 'Folder Actions Setup...'. Now select the 'EOS_Transfer.workflow' and it should now be assosciated with your 'Volumes' folder.

Now when you insert your EOS card into your card reader it should automatically copy your files from the card to the desktop.

One thing to note is of course that the folder structure on your card may not be the same as mine on the 5D. So you will (maybe?) have to make an edit to the folder action/script to make it reflect the location of the files on your specific card. I think it should be the same (?) but I am not totally sure and this could be IMPORTANT!!!

This little workflow script can be edited using Mac OS X's Automator and within it you can specify locations other than 'Desktop' if you wish.

I hope I have explained myself clearly enough for you to follow the instructions. I hope this is as useful to others as it is to myself. Let me know if you have any problems with this I will try and help but please remember that I am by no means an expert in using the Automator. I just googled all of this and hope that people might benefit as I have done. Good luck.  :-\ ;D

Raw Video / [SOLVED] CinemaDNG dilemma?
July 11, 2013, 02:16:54 PM
I have a little problem. I used RAWMagic to convert my captured *.RAW files to a CinemaDNG sequence. I am happy with the conversion and generally have had no problems with the files that RAWMagic creates.

The great thing about the files coming out of RAWMagic is that they can be graded in After Effects and Davinci Resolve. Wonderful.

After capturing lots of little *.RAW files and converting them to CinemaDNG my hard drive just filled up and I had so little space I needed to do something. Obviously I could just delete lots of the files that I created but I wanted to keep some (in fact most of) the footage. I just needed to keep the size down if possible.

I then thought I would try and use Adobe's DNG Converter and see what happened. I converted each folder at a time and found that they were taking much less disk space, with no apparent loss in quality (there is a lossy compression that I decided NOT to check). So, having shrunk all of the CinemaDNG sequences, I checked to make sure that they were still good to edit with.

I was able to use them just fine using Adobe Camera Raw to import them into After Effects. It was fine. Most of the grading that I have done so far has been done with just ACR.

However something that I want familiarise myself with is DaVinci Resolve. It's something I would like to learn. This is where I have a problem.

Before I did the little Adobe DNG Conversion I was able to import the CinemaDNG sequences into Resolve. Now what happens is they still appear in Resolve but they will appear really blurred. I was wondering what was happening and then I looked a little closed and find that all of the files that I have converted will only import at a resolution of 256x144 (8bit).

These files are still at the original resolution (in this instance 1880x1058 (16bit)) because if you import them into After Effects through ACR they will import fine.

What is going on here?

Also is this reversible? or am I going to have to accept that I will not be able to use them in Resolve?

Does anyone know of a workaround that can make them conform to what Resolve is expecting?

Or is it game over for me and Resolve? (unless of course I am willing to sacrifice lots of disk space)

Any help (or enlightenment) on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

EDIT: I just thought that I would mention here that DaVinci Resolve's (9.1.5) 'improved DNG handling' addresses the above problem so now I can happily use the compressed DNG files with Resolve.

I am expecting that there may be quite a few people that have hard drives that are beginning to fill up pretty quickly with the lovely RAW footage they are creating? :-\

This is great until I think to myself that I have lots of frames that I don't actually need. For example when I shoot I will always shoot more seconds than required so that it can be edited down.

While you can edit the from the created *.DNG files you can't edit the *.RAW files. So what happens is that I have lots of *.RAW files and/or lots of *.DNG files sitting on my hard drive and they are occupying probably a third more space than they need to be.

I know, from making basic edits to the *.RAW files in a HEX editor, that it is fairly easy to define how many frames there is within the *.RAW file. So I imagine that it wouldn't really be too much of a problem for someone with fairly elementary coding skills, to create a very basic executable program that could allow you to perhaps place an insert point (as in frame you want to start from) and an out point (as in frame you want to finish at). Then the file could be reformatted and resized appropriately for the amount of frames etc.

Even a preview is not essential at this stage (although would be nice) as you can use other tools (like Ginger HDR) for that bit.

If someone could possibly make such a thing it would really help with the whole RAW workflow. Basically what I want is a *.RAW file trimmer. This would of course mean that the resulting *.DNG sequences would be smaller also. It could also be used to fix files that are lacking the footer too.

I hope I have explained things clearly enough here. I am on the MAC so if this is possible I would personally like to see a tool for the MAC ;)

I know this is not really a Magic Lantern feature I am requesting but it is something that I feel would certainly support the whole RAW workflow.

SO IF YOU ARE A PROGRAMMER/CODER PLEASE FEEL FREE TO HAVE A GO ;)

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated :)

Feature Requests / Remote trigger for RAW record?
June 19, 2013, 03:09:52 AM
I have one of these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Infrared-Wireless-Remote-Control-Canon/dp/B0081TGY8Y/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1371603311&sr=8-13&keywords=IR+remote+eos

and also

something very similar to this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Timer-Remote-Control-Rs-60E3-Canon/dp/B003WD0IKO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1371603495&sr=8-2&keywords=remote+timelapse+trigger+eos

They are useful for time lapse and the IR trigger, I can use for triggering the normal H.264 video. I was wondering if it could ever be made possible to use such devices to trigger the RAW record module?

I am sure that it would be possible. It's not something that is critical but it certainly has its uses; like when you want to start a recording without touching (moving) the camera.

It would be great if there was some optional settings for these devices

Also maybe they could be configured for other uses?

EDIT: OK I found that the ML allows this as standard (I think) because its something that is supported with Canon's own firmware under the menu for timer record. Both of the above devices WILL work for triggering RAW record. YAY!

How do I add images to posts. I have an illustration that I think is relevant to a topic and I would like to add to a page on the forum. I would like to use the *.png format. I will convert to the correct format (if I know what that is?)

I just don't know how to go about adding the image and should the image be served elsewhere on the Internet or do you upload it. I want to contribute something that I think may help some people I just don't understand how to add an image >:( :'(
