Funny. The original plan was to make a simple video featuring local people, young and old, playing sports in celebration of a Sports Centre's 30th anniversary here in Japan. That was the plan until I got RAW working on my 5D. Once I got it working, the idea immediately changed into creating an cinematic style trailer that I served as the introduction to a special documentary that talks about the history of the gym, and it's importance to the people/community.  I won't bore you with the documentary because it is all in Japanese but please take look and enjoy the trailer:

(Please set to 4K resolution for the best quality)

When I first brought my 5D MkIII I was REALLY disappointed with the H264 recording quality, however those negative thoughts immediately changed once I had ML installed which turn my 5D into a beastly EX3 contender (or beater depending how you look at it)!  The RAW recording made everything so much easier for me to realize my vision once I figured out a smooth workflow for unpacking and rendering the files and so on.   Dat (yes, "Dat" instead of "that") 14-bit depth made everything so much easier for me for colour correct (which is a struggle in H264 format and it's low bit-rate and colour depth) those mid and low levels to bring each scene closer to what I saw on the day of filming. I am quite happy with the results even though I know I can do MUCH better if I thought and planned all in mind from the beginning.

I can't wait for the next major ML update for continuous RAW record in 1080p 24fps or higher, and I hope there are options to allow easier sound synching solutions with external recording devices such as Tascam.

Please enjoy!

Hi,
i forgot something totally. My cf cards were both formatted with Fat32. I guess this would make a difference to exFat, but now it's too late for testing today...

Should we set exFat to the list of standards for testing?

Something to add:
It is weird, the lighting situation seems to influence the write speed during the benchmark. With a lenscap on top I get repeatedly different speeds compared to lenscap off...
Could someone test this to be wrong or true?

Regards,
kontrakatze

So what's the final verdict? Is it definitely worth updating to this version or should we wait for the mystery update that might come out next month?

a1ex, gave us a little more medicine, and expand this phrase: "coming soon: a lot of stuff, including a real sensor upgrade"
8)

Huh?  Did I miss something? Will there be another major update within 2 weeks? Should I really wait for that instead of updating to last Monday's update?  Don't rattle my chains with mystic codes, my friend.

Ok, it has been a few days since the release of this update.  Is it worth updating to 1.2.3 from 1.1.3.NEXT.ML? Anything that I should be careful about if I do update?  Is continuous RAW recording working?

For MLV, please report issues in the MLV thread: http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7122

It's still a work in progress, and so far the issues reported were not 5D3-123-specific, but MLV-specific.

A1ex, do you have an idea how feasible would be to allow the magic zoom feature to be toggled on and off during RAW recording to optimise focusing? I'd love to have this feature as I believe it's more reliable than the Zebra option. Your thoughts?

2) H.264 sound works out of the box, no modules needed

I can also vouch for this. Sound always worked out of the box even before ML.

I forgot to say :)

Thanks for this!!

I missed it having sold my 5dm2.. I'd be eagerly waiting for it, since I have a MF lens which benefits from it greatly. This software is a joy!

thanks

What did you sell your 5Dm2 for?

I meant H264 1080p 50 or 60fps, I don't know what he referred to. Sorry about that. H264 720p at 60fps is possible even without ML as you say  ;)

Thanks for clearing that up, I understand your need now. I also really want this, ideally, I really want this in RAW format without using any stretching tricks. It would be fantastic if, somehow, the techs can figure this out and somehow pull-off 120fps at 720p. Such a wishlist that probably isn't possible, but hey, what do I know?

What I also want, and probably more useful, is the ability to switch/toggle the Zoom feature on the viewfinder whilst recording so you can perform a focus adjustment with accuracy without the need to buy an additional viewfinder. That would help massively as I have been in quite a few situations where I was, somehow, out of focus and it was really hard to tell in the standard viewfinder. Compared to the FPS wish, I feel the zoom toggle whilst recording would probably be more feasible.  Again, my apologies for plugin this wish as that would be in a different thread.

That's not possible as far as I know.

I'm confused. The 5DMIII as standard (without ML) can output 60fps H264 on a 720p resolution. Isn't this what is being talked about? I need some clarity to settle my mind on this one.

MZ flicker confirmed on 60fps while recording H264. Was it present on 1.1.3? (I prefer to avoid downgrading back and forth).

60fps H264? Couldn't this be done anyway? Maybe elaboration is needed.

kgv5:  Understood.  I'll take the advice and wait a little longer for more feedback. Definitely can't have corrupted frame headaches.

I long for the day when we could do continuous RAW recording without header/footer issues, but I guess that's for another thread.

Great news!! Thank you so much!

Double checking - I currently use ML 1.1.3 for serious video use as in work for clients. In this case, should I hold off from upgrade from my current firmware "1.1.13-ml-v2.3.NEXT" for now or should I really jump on this firmware 1.2.3 without hesitation? Love to have more input on this..
