.Tiff or .DPX sequences are a preferred standard in my experience.

7D with early build, using an old 300mm pentax m42 mount lens.
This video was from way before the vertical stripe issue was sorted on that camera (over a year ago), now I have upgraded to 5D3.

Your video has reminded to try again on the current build on 5Dmk3 :)

I tried this last year on the early 7D build(with vertical line issue)...now I've upgraded to 5Dmk3, I need to try again :)

That was the exact technique that I was thinking would work (Photoshop alignment).
I'm slightly embarrassed that I did not already know the directional stick reset press to properly align the canon focus box area. Now I've done that - all lines up perfectly every time.

I'm on 5d3 1.1.3 build.
Thank you again for implementing this, it works great.

As for other crop mark ideas, I could see that some cinematographers may find it extremely useful to see a frame line denoting APSC and APS-H  sub line markings (for full frame canons to display S35 sized sensor areas).
This would make a very handy viewfinder for planing camera placement/ location scouting when using full frame cameras but the when shooting main unit camera on Arri  Alexa or Red cinema cameras - which both have APS-H sized sensors (very close in size to APSC).

Again - this is would be a great tool to check lens FOV coverage/ crop factor of smaller sensor sizes, when viewed on a full frame canon camera.

Very nice.

Thank you for working out the crop highlight box - it is very useful to me for quickly getting perspective on how much of a crop is being made - before entering that mode.
Very useful to see, especially when swapping out lenses and planning the coverage when crop mode is enabled.

Only thing I noticed was I had to align the white Canon focus box to get crop highlight area to line up correctly - but that was pretty easy to work out.

Bravo.

Shoot Preparation / Re: High Quality ML Crop Marks

Looking good.

I would like to see a custom crop mark that has 16x9 or even better 2.35:1 aspect with thin red x5 crop box highlighting the actual area that appears in recording - so at a quick glance in 'normal' mode, you can see what the x5 crop record would be framing (before committing to selecting crop mode).

This would be very useful to quickly judge what framing would be on various lenses...without having to punch in and try and judge from ML greyscale low resolution image (but has accurate framing).

Yes this is great, works for me too =). But I have to choose 3:2 t/b for alignment on my Zacuto EVF. You sure about 16:9?

That is what seems to work best for me...16x9 t/b and the Zacuto camera scale preset set to 5d3.
I'm using non-mirrored, as I prefer just to have all the menu/frame lines all within the EVF display.

First two rounds of HDMI fixes will be in the next nightly build. It's not perfect, but at least it's a bit better than "totally broken".

Don't expect miracles.

HUGE thank you for implementing HDMI monitor support in current build > magiclantern-Nightly.2014Aug07.5D3123
I'm using Zacuto EVF monitor in non-mirrored mode to give me display that I'm used to having on rear LCD, enabling me remote framing with ML menu that is scaled correctly on the EVF.
The Zacuto has 5d3 camera scale preset that gets it displaying properly once the ML display aspect is set to 16x9TB display.

For me this is a very welcome breakthrough, as now (with this monitor at least) - the EVF can be positioned anywhere, while still giving all the familiar ML display and correct frame line scaling.

Great work A1ex and all supporting code wizards!

Understood :)

Many thanks for investigating

2. Just tried shorting the shutter and the ground pin, and it started recording. Am I missing something?

Correct, but stopping record requires all pins to connect - requiring a two-stage switch I think.
I made a simple button trigger for the shutter and ground pin (or other pin) and it worked a dream on my 7D with the half shutter REC_key function. On press start, one press stop.

I (and I hope many others) will find it enormously helpful to have this function on 5D3 1.2.3 for remote record triggering.

Cheers a1ex (again!)

1) ask Marekk to submit a patch

2) it's in Canon menu, why duplicate it in ML menu?

1= Will do

2= Canon menu trigger can start movie record on full press of shutter button only, not half press.
Sounds insignificant but half shutter would allow a very simple DIY external trigger button to be made for anyone wanting to make their own wired record button extension  - without having to find a bulky two-stage switch that is basically impossible to find in a very small form factor.  It would also simplify many triggering options for anyone making their own remote control camera rigs, controlled via Arduino etc. (for cranes/jibs/etc).

Cheers for the reply a1ex :)

Fresh compiled version of ML with overlays on LCD (mirroring enabled):

USE IT FOR TESTS ONLY AND ON YOUR OWN RISK

Thank you so much for this...this is the the answer to my prayers.
I really hope that it will find it's way into future 1.2.3 builds soon.

My only other remaining magic lantern prayer is to have REC_KEY enabled on 5D3 1.2.3 build - so I can trigger video record from an external trigger switch via half shutter command.
Is there a technical reason why it is the only camera to not have this function enabled?

Regards!

Whilst on the discussion of REC trigger, is there any chance the the REC_KEY  feature will be enabled on the 5DIII 1.2.3 build in the near future? (it seems to be enabled for all other cameras) I would really appriciate the half shutter command to start/stop the video. (So I can make my own external button trigger input)

I imagine others would find it useful to help develop other external start/stop controlers - possibly being able to split the command to sync start audio recorders or hdmi recorders?

Already put this in feature requests a few weeks back, but without any response. I wondered if there is a technical reason why the 5D3 is the only camera that has no rec_key options within ML?

Hi,
Love the work being done to bring ML to 1.2.3 as well as solving the boot flag issue.
I tried the latest build on March 31 and noticed an odd brightness flickering issue on the LCD.
My LCD brightness is set on manual, I actually felt that the issue was less noticeable when set to Auto brightness.
If you actually go to the Canon menu for the brightness setting, you can see the little white arrow moving all around.

I reverted to the normal firmware by removing the bootflag and the LCD brightness was stable.
I also reverted to the 17 March build and again the LCD brightness was stable. I am now back on the older build because it was annoying me too much.

I wonder if anyone else experienced this issue.
Thanks :)

Yes - I also have the same flickering issue in LV from 2014-03-30 build.

Think there are two rouge shots at 3200 iso in there (duplicate setups in graveyard section) but rest is 6400.
Raw rec module - Nightly.2014Mar13.5D3 113 build

Workflow was:
>Conversion via raw2dng
> Adjustments in ACR (exposure brought down a little to help hide noise/ little sharpening added)
> Import .dng's into After effects
> Basic color correction/ Light grade in Filmconvert (in 16bit workspace)
> 10bit Uncompressed Quicktime export
> .H264 encode for Vimeo CBR 5.1 profile.

First low light / ISO test of ML raw on 5D3. Noise pattern still visible in a few shots, but not bad for 6400 with no de-noise filter. Shot @ F.2 1/30th shutter using Kowa inflight 1.75x anamorphic and TRUMP58 lens with 2x oval from dogschidtoptiks.co.uk

Not pushed raw files too much - I'm that sure cleaner results can be obtained with better processing and compression for upload.

Hello all, (I've edited this post to be more concise)

I'm wondering if it's possible to have the same Movie REC key 'Half shutter' command option to start/stop the raw video recording for the 5D3... like you can on the current 7D build (and from what I can tell all other camera ML builds):

7D build 203
Built on: 2014-03-19 23:31:14 +0000
Changeset: aad1ee69ef7a

I would like this option on the 5D3:

This may be simple to implement, but alas I have no clue as to how.
It will massively help me at the moment - as I use this feature to remotely trigger the camera with a simple push button switch (not a two-stage shutter remote)

Cheers!
