General Help Q&A / Motion Detect
April 13, 2014, 12:55:09 AM
I have been trying to get motion detection running on my 5DIII. I have never used this feature before.

I have set the exposure as normal and in the MD menu used difference, medium and tried different trigger levels.

When I come out of the ML menu the MD automatically goes to LV. So far so good.

The problem is the outer and inner boxes of the two boxes, which I can move around ok, are black. And MD doesn't trigger, eg when I move my hand in front of the lens.

I have tried exp sim on and off. The detection box remains black.

Can someone throw a little help my way?

Thanks for the clarification.

I fully appreciate the relative roles of ETTR, Dual and Bracketing. BTW I always use auto bracketing if I can't use my external meter to meter the scene. Brilliant technology.

I remain a 'devout' and appreciative user of ML :-o)

If you are thinking about reoptimising ETTR, may I suggest you consider giving the user to option to better control the coupling between highlight and shadow/mid prioritisation.

I am explicitily thinking that some users will always wish to protect highlights but value, say, having a dual-ISO shadow boost when needed, but NOT at the expense of 'insulting' the highlights.

In other words, allow the user to be able to 'break' the connectivity between highlights and envoking dual-ISO. Thus ETTR gives the optimum exposure for highlights and dual-ISO kicks in to 'just' boost the low end.

Alex one last thing if I may.

Could you give me some hint as to how the optimization algorithm works in ETTR.

In other words what takes precedence over what.

If, for example, have highlights at 0.1 and shadows and mid tone at some S/N value, what attribute dominates in seeking a solution.

I usually wish to protect highlights, but also wish to boost the shadows with dual.

Or is this too complex a process to answer.

After I submitted my post I sat down and played with the setting in a logical fashion and came to a similar conclusion.

However, I remain confused.

Even with shadow and midrange set to zero I would like to suggest there should be a way for the user to explicitly request dual ISO be used with ETTR.

In my case, a sunset, I was looking for the extra boost from dual for the dark foreground, but I did not want any of the highlights clipped, hence shadows and mid at zero.

My previous question may not have been clear and it contained some iPad induced typos.

So this evening I took a sunset with a large DR.

Auto-ETTR was used and dual-ISO set at 800.

Shadow and midrange were set to 0.

I expected the dual-ISO to kick in. But instead Auto-ETTR set the dual to 100/100.

I have never seen this before.

Am I missing something and/or being stupid?

I'm running bleeding edge on a 5DIII, all has been fine until this evening when I noted a strange thing.

I'm running A-ETTR and dual-ISO, but when I enter 800 or 1600 in the dual setting and use ETTR, dual sets to 100/100.

I have never seen this before.

Has any nod any pointers to what, if anything, I'm doing wrong.

Sorry to bother you, but I being thick!

I have loaded the latest version 2.1, which is clearly stated in the LR plug-in manager window. Also the plug-in runs as expected.

But...for the life of me I can not find a sub-menu to additional settings.

When I run the plugin it goes and does its stuff straight away and there is nothing about settings in the plug-in manager window.

I'm running Windows 7 64bit mode, with the latest LR.

Hope you can help.

Just uploaded latest nightly for 5DIII, green bars on magic zoom nice and clear, even for those with old eyes like me!

Many thanks

Here is a post from my blog that talks to CamRanger.

For example, I used it this morning at the shoot where I took the two snaps I have just posted.

I used CamRanger with my 5DIII + tilt-shift.   The CamRanger, with focus zoom and focus peaking allowed me to nail the focus. As I have said elsewhere on the ML site, if you can't afford CamRanger and don't have an iPad, then ML magic zoom and focus peaking is the next best thing.

Great information, I'm afraid my eyesight, even with a Hoodman, could not see that level of detail.

BTW I find the LV focus tools, like MZ and focus peaking, a great substitute when I don't have an iPad with me. My preference for achieving critical focus, especially with my Tilt-Shift lens, is to use my CamRanger-iPad set up. The difference is very clear, if you forgive the pun.

As an example I'm just sitting down for breakfast in New Mexico having had an early morning capturing some architectural photography with my 5DIII, 24mm TS-E, CamRanger and an iPad. Getting the shots was a pleasure.

As I say, I welcome getting the ML focus 'enhanced' as the in-camera LV is a good fallback.

Rather than me specify this may I suggest it be user selectable, within limits.

For example 1,3 or 5 pixels wide.

Everyone has differnt eyesight and I think user preferences are what makes ML a great tool.

Agree. I bought a Hoodman: fantastic.

But I would still humbly suggest making focus confirm easier to see, eg thicker green bar, or green dot or audio or all three.

BtW my CamRanger focus peaking and focus confirm is much easier to use, but then again if is $300 more than ML, and runs on an iPad screen.

Just an observation. We know that an iPad will connect to a Canon DSLR, eg I have CamRanger running and integrated, in clunky way, into my ML-based workflow, eg for my TS-E workflow:
- connect CamRanger (CR) via USB
- use CR to compose
- use CR to tilt and rotate the plane of sharp focus, ie CR has focus peaking and it is clearer to see focus than on the small MZ focus box in ML
- shift as required
- use ML Auto-ETTR to set the optimum shutter speed
- take picture :-o)

In other words convergence between Canon, CamRanger and Magic Lantern means a content photographer!

Yes the Camranger gets its camera data through the USB.

I'm still ignorant on this.

Are you saying that ML overlays that we see on the LCD can not be merged with the LCD that Camranger sees through the USB?

First an observation.

When using CamRanger only the Canon LCD is visible in CamRanger, ie the ML overlays are not.

So the request is, can the Canon LCD output that CamRanger taps into be megred with the ML overlay feed, before it is fed out of the camera.

This way any piece of hardware or software that took the Canon LCD feed would also see the ML data.

In a previous post I had suggested a few enhancements to Magic Zoom, ie thicker green bar or a green dot and/or some audio feedback.

This post is not a repeat of that request!

Whilst shooting today I noted that when Magic Zoom 'found' focus I could hear an audible click from the camera. I was using MZ with a manual lens (24mm TSE-E II) so it was not the lens making the sound.

My observation is, that if you are in a quite area, and you have difficulty with 'seeing' the MZ focus confirm (I use a hoodman to see mine on the LCD). listen out for the 'magic click': it may safe your day!

BTW I have no idea where the click is coming from: does anyone?

In a previous post I buried a request related to Magic Zoom, hence I'm sure if was lost.

In Magic Zoom, which is a a critical tool for photographers like me with manual lenses, ie clearer focus confirmation than focus peaking, especially in bright sun, we have three ways to show focus.

The one I believe needs 'enhancing' is the green bars method.

I challenge anyone to 'see' the green bars, which I assume are top and bottom of the focus frame.

May I request that the bars be made a lot 'thicker' or that a big green dot be made to appear in the MZ window when focus is achieved.

I often hand hold with my right hand and simply use a wired remote with my left hand to trigger the shutter.
