Just a Merry Christmas message from a pestilence locked down U.K.

Plus a great link to read over your holiday break: https://ciechanow.ski/cameras-and-lenses/

Another minor uplift to LensSim, which now shows a representation of the entrance and exit pupils: http://photography.grayheron.net/2020/12/lenssim-12.html

Some may be interested in a little project I've developed to create a Lens Data Sheet.

Here is the latest post on LensSim: http://photography.grayheron.net/2020/12/lenssim-data-sheet.html

QuoteLow risk but should be mentioned: Warranty issues apply.

Agree, but, as with those seeking to get their camera IR converted, risk has been assessed  ;)

As for the thermal paste, someone who knows their stuff should be able to verify the amount that is acceptable.

One final thought, when you look at what Canon did inside, relative to the tweak in the video, you have to say, what were you thinking Canon?

Cheers

QuoteI'm keeping my eyes out on Ebay for a $10,000 Modified R5 now.

Based on my initial post, someone with the skills to break open a camera, could make a nice little business doing a conversion, ie just like the IR conversion people do.

Just a thought or hint  ;)

Cheers

I'm pleased to release TiltSim 2, that is a closer emulation of a 'real' T/S lens: http://photography.grayheron.net/2020/11/tiltsim-2.html

Just added an additional feature for the tilt lens users: http://photography.grayheron.net/2020/11/dofis-tilt-calculator.html

@tupp

Fully understand all you have said and I assure you I know what you are referencing.

As I keep on trying to say to you, the current TiltSim is a simplified model to gain some insight into TS lenses.

Your gif is well known on the web, but you could also have shown the gif showing the hinge in action from front tilt, ie see both here http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/using-lens-tilt-on-your-digital-slr/

All I'm doing in TiltSim is showing the hinge, ie not the Scheimpflug line. That is exploiting the J height from sin tilt = f/J and, of course, focus distance.

I will likely write a 2nd version which better models  the true lens tilt, but it will not change the gross view of things.

Once again, thanks for posting a reply, but I can assure you I know TiltSim is 'wrong' ;-), but not so wrong that it's not useful.

Cheers

Garry

Ps SelectN is used because of how Desmos works. It does select the 1/3 stop aperture numbers, which are shown on the y axis ;-)

@tupp

Once again, thanks for all your feedback.

Bluntly, I think you are looking for more than I was attempting to do here, ie your references are sound for a large format or medium format technical camera user.

For a TS lens on a Dslr, I'm comfortable that TiltSim is doing its job, ie as an tool to help one understand a tilt and shift lens on an Dslr ;-)

Hopefully, my latest post explains my thinking.

Cheers

Scripting Corner / Re: Script for Astrophotography

@f.having.pz

From my experience, you need to decide if feedback is essential for the functioning of the script, nice to have or a debug diagnostic.

If essential, then you need to find a solution, clearly.

If nice to have or a debug tool, then a 'cheap and cheerful' approach should be ok.

If using the notify box, I use this function:

function my_display(text,time,x_pos,y_pos)
    text = string.rep("\n",y_pos)..string.rep(" ",x_pos)..text
    display.notify_box(text,time*1000)
end

Bottom line: know what you are seeking, ie use just enough feedback, and no more ;-)

@tupp

This simulator is a tool for DSLR users, ie not for technical camera users ;-)

Also, you don't need to worry about Scheimpflug if you use the hinge, eg see here http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/using-lens-tilt-on-your-digital-slr/

Bottom line: I wrote TiltSim to help TS-E users explore the basic principles, ahead of going into the field.

Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback: much appreciated.

Just uploaded a new version of DOFIS that: tidies up the code a bit; adds additional comments to help people understand what the code is doing; ensures DOFIS 'respects' the ML AB settings when exposure bracketing; and uses a more refined sensor+diffraction resolution model.

http://photography.grayheron.net/2020/10/dofis-resolution-fom-tweak.html

As usual I welcome feedback or questions, ie here or via a PM.

One thing to think about is the resolution you can get using the two approaches.

That is driving the lens from inside, ie using the ML or Canon code vs rotating the lens externally via an add on device.

Just a thought.
