Hi guys,

I am tying to figure out how to export best quality. I can use Adobe Camera Raw in after effects and then export 10 bit .MOV files with Avid DNxHD, but I'm not sure if that's the right way to do it, seeing that the raw is supposedly 14 bit.

Also, Davinci Resolve can playback the raw CinemaDNG in real time and export WAAAAY faster than After Effects, but the export options are the same as AE, of course.  (for this reason alone, I would go with Resolve over AE)

Lastly, it seems logical to me that I should color correct and grade the raw files before exporting to .MOV, since there is some compression happening afterwards. Is this the right approach?

Please correct me if I've made some errors in what I said.

Thanks for helping me learn!
Mr D

PS. Does anyone know if Resolve is even necessary for coloring? Can AE or Premiere do the same things by different route? I have not seen a difference(aside from camera tracked coloring)

No. I'm in my room with a computer monitor which is super blown out, unless I go to iso100 with the Canon ISO, which is what I did, and then ML with 1600 on the dual_iso

When I put my canon iso to 100 and dual_iso's iso to 1600, then take a photo, it comes out with horizontal lines in my LCD - as expected. However, when I go to my comp and put the CR2 into cr2HDR.exe, it processes and outputs a DNG with only iso 100 (very dark)... I try to use Camera Raw to pull it back up in brightness, but it doesn't go enough, and it is super noisy.

any ideas?

Dynamic range is just a part of gains.
As you get a RAW file, you can deeply adjust image rendering like with a still image RAW. Plus, there's no compression face to the H264. This is only a couple of examples..

But you have to be careful how you manage RAW video files; if you directly compress DNG to JPEG to work with, there will be no huge gains.

I tried some outdoor shots today and the difference was immense. So, yeah I can see.

HOWEVER, I see people talking about DNG and CinemaDNG and I can't find a thread comparing the two. Are they the same quality? If so, I assume they are just for different programs to recognize them(resolve, for ex)

Not possible , 5D2 runs a Fat32 system limited to 4GB that's it.

Makes sense now, looking at the raw capabilities graph for the cameras. I guess the MARK 3 is the only one that can keep going. I'll have to find a way to upgrade!

Can anyone tell me where to find info about getting around the 4gb file size limit on the Mark 2 during Raw?

14-bit RAW vs compressed 8-bit 4:2:0 H.264 codec.

They are worlds apart.

Try out for yourself and see the difference, it's night and day. It isn't for fun we are jumping up and down like small children on Christmas Eve.

I have tried it, but only indoors and the lighting was not too strong or contrasted, so I guess that might be why. But I get the feeling I'm doing something wrong because I don't notice, or can't seem to pull out some awesome dynamic range from it, and I don't see people on Youtube doing it either, with the exception of one video. So I'm not saying ANYTHING negative. I am blaming myself and looking for answers! When you say night and day, can you point me to a source where I can see or learn? Is it possible that I'm on a Mark 2 and not a 3, which may be limited in some way?

Humbly appreciated!
Thank you!

Can someone help me out here?
Been watching a lot of comparison videos on youtube of RAW vs h264 in the Mark 2 and Mark 3 - The only difference I can see is a slight dynamic range and a good amount of shaper detail. I thought the raw was suppose to give it waaaay more dynamic range. What have your experiences been in seeing the difference in RAW vs h264 straight from the camera?

Thanks!

Post-processing Workflow / Tone mapping RAW DNGs?
February 11, 2014, 12:20:52 AM
Hey Guys,

I saw someone have a video and I think someone mentioned that they did HDR video. From my research, the ML HDR hack is only good for slow movements. So filming a movie, for example, with the HDR probably wont work. Correct me if I'm wrong, of course.

That leads me to ask, what about tone mapping. From my understanding, this is when you fake HDR by exporting multiple exposures from one raw image.

My point is, I'm trying to see if I can get an even better dynamic range after I record raw.  Exploring my options, seeing what you all have to say about it.

Thank you,
Mr D

General Chat / RAW 5d Mark 2 Dynamic range vs Mark 3
February 11, 2014, 12:15:52 AM
Hi guys,

I am considering an upgrade to Mark 3 depending on the dynamic range difference. When shooting Raw, between these two cameras, are there differences in the dynamic range, and if so, is there enough to justify an upgrade? Although the mk3 can get some more resolution, I'm mainly concerned with the DR, since that is one of the bigger factors in quality.
Has any one done a comparison?

Thank you!
Mr D

no quality difference

Thank you for your reply. Much appreciated.

The built in encoder is ffmpeg/avconv. The settings can be tweaked so you can get whatever quality you like, and it essentially be the equivalent of exporting to dng then converting.
It all depends on your preferred work flow really.

Is there a thread showing how to pull the best quality out of the mlv using MlRawViewer? I haven't seen it. Maybe I missed it?

Thank you

Look at the very first post of this thread.

MLV is a container for both DNGs, metadata and sound, whereas the older RAW module only handles DNGs.

Sorry, I meant, is there a quality difference in these formats?
#40
Can someone tell me where to find comparison between MLV and the regular RAW formats in magic lantern? Thank you!

Awesome tool.

My question is, to get the best quality from this, should we use the build in encoder, or should we export as dng and then render video using something like avid DNxHD codec?

Download the last A.D. build, feb-4th its the most stable build yet, plus A.D.
fine tunes  mlv/raw for the 5d2

Thanks Reddeercity, I couldn't find the 5d thread!

Awesome. Will Download it now!

General Help Q&A / 5d Mark 2 "Press set to start"
February 10, 2014, 05:46:44 AM
Before throwing a brick at me, I'd like to say that YES I have looked for a long time and can't find the answer.

On my Mark 2, it says to press set to start RAW. When I click set, it turns it to "on" However, when I go to record, I have to press set again and it doesn't work. It disables it.

Is it possible the nightly build I downloaded is flawed in this?

Thank you,
Mr D

Hi guys,

I'm reading from a lot of posts that the Lexar 1000 is the best choice for raw. However, based on the speed specs needed for a memory card doing raw video, I was wondering if my current cards can handle raw video.

Thank you,
Mr D
#48
I see some of you are saying you did this with the Mark 3. Are you guys saying that you haven't been hearing people talk about bricking the Mark 2 as well? Just trying to get clarification before I go ahead.

Thanks!

Hi guys,

Couple months back I was on the forums and got a bit scared to try Raw on my 5d mk2 because I was seeing posts about people bricking their cameras. Has anything changed? I can't find those posts anymore. maybe I'm looking in the wrong section?

Also, I'm wondering if my memory card can handle raw? It's a Sandisk  Extreme Pro CF 90mb/sec

Thanks!
