Remember that if you're shooting 60fps, but slowing down by an additional half speed, you're essentially emulating 120fps. For motion with less blur you'll want a shutter speed of 1/240. Getting enough light indoors can become wicked tricky though.

So it was H.264 and not Raw then?

I'd recommend a card fast enough for the full 20mb/s, but then just setting 2.0X bitrate. This really only increases your bitrate with high detail or high iso shots, but it's better than nothing. I'd also just use a neutral picture style, aiming to grade as little as possible. 8 bit H.264 does not grade well. If you're shooting dramatic production, just focus on lighting your scenes and it'll look great.

That's because a 550D can't do 70mb/s.  Do some research on it.

Getting the same pink highlight issue with a 50D using the latest nightly.

CBR 1.0X will still have a varying bitrate, depending on detail and noise. It just won't vary as much as a higher setting.

General Chat / Re: NEW H.265 CODEC

I may be wrong, but I don't think he's talking about Magic Lantern not using it. I think he's just commenting on how lame it is that camera developers such as Canon and Sony are not using 10 bit colour in their codecs. It really is a shame.

It's built in to your PC or Mac already nikki.   :P

I've experienced the same thing using both my 50D and 550D shooting 1/48 24fps in both RAW and H.264, so I had also assumed some sort of light interference was the cause.

If you were able to save your log curve as a .cube 3D lut you could import it.

On another note, would it be possible to incorporate a saturation slider Baldand? The ability to control saturation of the raw file before applying luts and exporting as ProRes would be an extremely valuable tool. Thanks again for all your work!

Is there a 20 bit cr2hdr for OSX?

24 fps won't enable a higher resolution no. I also wouldn't expect better low light performance than a 70D. I believe the 50D will perform worse actually, but not significantly. More or less the same.

Awesome! I will give it a try thanks again! And a quick test confirmed your info. Shooting 1600 iso on the 50D in 3.0X CBR retained much more detail than the standard bitrate. It came in at 117 mbit/sec, so this makes sense. So my original request, disabling h.264 noise reduction, is more or less as simple as cranking up bitrate.  ;D Thanks for the help! Unfortunately the 550D will stop recording at this rate, and it's still inferior to raw by far! I will try out your workflow!

Yep, lots of Raw on the 50D. I'm on a Mac currently using MLRV to apply luts and export as ProRes, but if it's available for Mac, I could certainly try developing DNGs in RawTherapee beforehand.  Thank you for all the great info! My interest in H.264 lately was simply to try and match the 50D raw as closely as possible with my 550D in H.264, but it really turns to mush above 400 iso, and that's being generous. It may be time to upgrade my B-cam.  :(
#66
Haha yeah. I suppose H.264 low bitrate can also be an aliasing filter!  :P I guess cranking the bitrate is my best chance of saving detail at higher isos then. Well... Raw is much better. Neat video is a much better denoiser than h.264  ;)
#67
So this is why turning up the CBR bitrate only seems to result in an actual higher bitrate at higher isos? To compress this noise detail less?
#68
Would it be possible to include a saturation control much like the exposure control? This could be very useful.

It's under image fine-tuning. Absolute Zero Sharpness. Disables sharpening completely (below canons zero level). I was hoping that the same could be done to the noise reduction, but if it's done by the h.264 encoder then it's impossible. I thought I had read that it was done before the encoder though... Does anyone know for sure?
#70
Ok. I wasn't sure if the noise reduction was included in that, as Magic Lantern was able to disable sharpening completely with the absolute zero sharpness function. Unfortunate that the same can't be done with noise reduction.  :( Oh well.

Hi guys. I've been told that MOV video mode applies some noise reduction in camera. This could help explain why video seems to turn to mush at higher Isos on my 550D and 50D in this mode. Shooting Raw is nice, as it eliminates this problem and remains sharp, allowing me to clean up the video in post. I was curious however, to see if it was possible to disable this h.264 noise reduction? Thanks all.

Full Resolution Silent Pictures shot in Jpeg. Any chance that it's possible? I'm curious as well.

Raw Video Postprocessing / Re: Editing and CC in ProRes

Yeah if you're using MlRawViewer to convert it will be 10 bit, as it uses ffmpeg.

In my experience so far, Raw converted to ProRes still looks miles ahead of H264 in quality. It just looks way better. ProRes is also 10 bit as opposed to the 8 bit h264 codec.

General Help Q&A / Re: Cinestyle and Lut
October 26, 2014, 11:08:10 PM
Not sure if it's possible, but you can set Neutral as your picture style for exposure, and Magic Lantern can assign Cinestyle as your recorded picture style. It will switch to Cinestyle automatically when you hit record.
