Hello,
I'm not sure if this is the right part of the forum or not. If not, please move to the right place!

So.. I was using my Canon EOS 50D for shooting photos for 4 years now, with Magic Lantern.
2 Weeks ago, my camera was stuck on a Error which is expensive to repair, so I bought another used 50D from a photo store for 150€. The camera looks nearly new and shutter count is only 10.000.

I have 2 problems with this 50D, and I'm not sure if the problem is the 50D itself, or just a setting problem, or maybe because this 50D does not have Magic Lantern.
My old 50D had Magic Lantern and it was perfect, the "new" (but used) 50D does not have Magic Lantern installed.

So here are my 2 problems.

Problem 1 (and this is the big problem):
90% of the time, the LiveView shows exactly what the photo will be looking like.
But in 10% of the time, the LiveView shoes a much much different lightning.
For example:
I use the LiveView to set my brightness (aperture, exposure time, ISO), then I switch to Viewfinder, make some photos using Viewfinder, and look at the photos if everything is right.
In 10% of the time, I see a super bright view in the LiveView, but the photo is very very dark.
I have set all settings to the same as my old 50D, so I can not explain it to myself, why this happens.
Does anybody has a idea?!
Does Magic Lantern has something to do with a better LiveView?! But I also have one of these cheap 1200D (a very basic Canon DSLR), and even this camera always shoes the exact image in LiveView, and it also does not have Magic Lantern installed.

Problem 2:
Sometime I try to make a photo, but the shutter does not make the photo. It doesn't even focus.
First, I thought it's a focus problem.
But know I have the idea, that maybe just the shutter button doesn't work as easy as my old one and maybe I need try to press it harder.
I definitely need to test this first.
But my question is, does Magic Lantern has a function that let the camera focus better?

Sorry that my english is not the best, I'm from Germany.

I'm very thankful for every help!
Appreciate every tip.

Thanks!

Post-processing Workflow / 360° VR Videos ?!
February 02, 2016, 06:39:33 PM
Hey!
I have just realised that there is a video rig that allows to make these cool 360° videos you see on facebook since some months, using two GoPros. I mean the ones you can move around with your mouse while it plays.
http://www.izugar.com/product/z2x.html

This video rig uses two GoPros with 194° fisheye lens on.

As far as I'm not big fan of GoPros, and also don't have any GoPros, but have two DSLRs laying around..I ask myself if it's possible to build a rig like this, with two DSLRs (+ fisheye adapters on 18mm kit-lens) instead of GoPros?

I would use a 1100D and a 1200D (also have 50D) both with 18mm kit lens and maybe a x0.45 adapter/converter like this here?
http://www.amazon.de/Concept-Objektiv-Weitwinkel-Objektiv-Vorsatzobjektiv-DSLR-Kameras/dp/B015CGRW4I/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1454434355&sr=8-6&keywords=canon+fisheye

Note: For video, not for photos. :)

Any suggestions? ideas?
Thanks! :)

@dmilligan

1.Can you please tell me how to set it from automatic to manuel? I can't find it.
2.Has somebody ever tried implementing a 1080p video modus? Maybe it works, even if only for a few seconds/minutes.

Thanks!

Hi.
2 short questions.
Is it possible to use manual exposure, iso and shutter speed, when filming with the 1100D on Magic Lantern?
And is 720p still the highest (H.264, not RAW) resolution - no 1080p?

I'm mostly shooting with my 50D and sometimes use my 1100D only as second camera.

Thanks!

Short question:
Would it be possible, to record audio on 50D, by using a USB-Mic (MLV-Rec or H.264)?
If it's not possible right now - maybe it would be a good idea to develop something like this for the new firmware update?

I mean, the 50D is a really good video camera by using Magic Lantern Firmware (especially for it's low price), but the point for most people is the problem of missing audio recording functionality.

Hi dude, thank you for your answer!
I will try these settings later today and give feedback.

And by the way, I have noticed that I ALWAYS have some (not much) noise in my shots, even when recording with ISO 160 (as I understand should have less noise than ISO 100 when recording video, right?).

I'm recording with Canon 50D ( Sigma 20mm 1.8, Canon 50mm 1.8 ).
Maybe you have some tips for me.

Thanks!

Thank you, and I'm working on PC!
I have many different Cineform 10-bit output formats, which exactly one do you use - or should I use?

Thanks!

Hello,

I'm working with 50D CDNG files.
Right now I'm:
-record files using 50D RAW-REC (not MLV)
-convert to CDNG 16bit, via rawcdng 1.5.0.BETA6
-color grading in Davinci Resolve Light (simple grading, using LUTs and some basic corrections)
-exporting in H.264
-importing in Premiere Pro
-color correction 2, and cutting in Premiere Pro
-exporting in H.264 and upload to youtube via browser

I'm mostly working on low budget music videos (for Youtube), that should look high quality!
Means I don't have much time for color correction, LUTs are great for this, and H.264 output is simple and fast to edit.

BUT on my final files, I don't see this great RAW-Video detailed quality. I think the problem is the step: H.264 export from Davinci.
So what is the best export format from resolve, for final grading&cutting the files in Premiere Pro?
Is there a way to have great quality, but still small files and fast export?
I think I don't wanna work with proxy files, like I said I don't have much time for editing.

So I need a simple, fast workflow, that still means high quality.   ::)

Hope somebody can help me. Thanks! :)

I'm using the 50D for RAW filming for some months now, and it is really great!
(By the way, thanks to all developers who made this possible! It's unbelievable.)

RAW-Video and also MLV-Rec are working really great.
But sometimes I would like to use the usual movie mode with MOV video files, and not RAW-Video, for filming events etc.
When I record MOV files I set the FPS to 23,976. But when I playback the video files on my PC, it plays back very fast, looks like it plays back in double speed or something.

Everybody ever has the same problem, or know how to fix this?
Thanks!

Post-processing Workflow / Sharp Videos (Vimeo)
December 06, 2014, 09:00:42 PM
Hi everyone!
I'm shooting video on Canon DSLR for 2 or 3 years now, and with Magic Lantern something around 6 months.
I get really nice videos using RAW video. But I'm wondering how some people on Vimeo get a overall sharp picture without any depth of field.

I'm mostly shooting with a Canon 50mm 1.8.
I would have to set aperture on something like F20 to get a look like that. But then I would have to set ISO so high that I would have a noisy picture, even if I set length of exposure to 1/25 (I'm usually shootin on 1/50).

Here some videos I'm talkin about:

especially 0-20sec.
http://vimeo.com/groups/192251/videos/113455545

especially 20-30sec.
http://vimeo.com/groups/192251/videos/113517187

Here is my equipment:
-Canon EOS 50D
-Canon EOS 1100D
-Canon EF 50mm 1.8
-Canon EF 18-55mm (standard kit lens)
-RMC Tokina  28mm  2.8 (m42 lens with adapter)
and tripod, steadycam, different video lights, etc...

Any tips?

@Tullen: I tried a iPad 3 with DSLR Controller App (+ 2in1 Camera Connection Kit) - I can get it run, but it stops monitoring as soon as I start video recording (RAW or H.264 same)! So for me, it does NOT work right now. But maybe the future brings more options, or maybe I just have a slow USB Cable or Camera Connection Kit...

I think it's too much for the camera to record video and also monitors the video same time on another screen - for a camera that was not even build to record video! Think the CPU is too slow...but I'm not sure! :)

Hi DigitalVeil!
With 50D and Magic Lantern you can shoot H.264 at Full HD (1920x1080), or RAW Video at max. 1568 width (I think it's 1568x882).
There is a option to use digital zoom x5 - with that option you can record Full HD RAW Video. BUT even with the fastest card, the 50D sometimes stops in that mode, and also you can't use x5 zoom mode for the most situations.
Also the highest FPS you can set is 30fps.

I got a 50D and it's a great video camera for it's cheap price. But you can not really compare to a 5D Mk3, because of it's bigger sensor (good for low light) and it's Full HD Raw video option.

If you are looking at the price - the 50D is the best camera you can get for it's price. If you want the best video camera and can spend money - you can find better cameras.

Don't forget: 50D was a photo camera without video mode, so it does not have audio recording. Also don't forget the CF cards are expensive for RAW video, I have 2x KomputerBay 64GB 1050x, each one for 85€ (something around $100). I think you can record something around 15mins on 64GB - one minute RAW video is like 4GB.

Any other questions? Just ask me! :-)

Raw Video / RAW video + Photoshop Actions? Possible?
September 07, 2014, 11:19:39 PM
Hello everybody.
Is there any chance to work with Photoshop and Photoshop Actions, when editing Magic Lantern RAW video files?
I imported my DNG files into photoshop, edited them with Adobe Camera Raw, and exported as TIF.

Now I would like to:
-import them into Photoshop (not Adobe Camera Raw)
-Set any Photoshop Action
-export them (as TIF or JPEG or whatever)

But automatically, without having to import and export each frame after frame!
Is there any workflow, or is it impossible?

Thanks for all answers!

@dpjpandone:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AgQ2MOkAZTFHdFFIcFp1d0R5TzVPTVJXOEVyUndteGc#gid=5

50D max write speed: 70mbps
  7D max write speed: 80mbps

50Ds max. FPS is just 30 !!
While the 7D can go up to 50 or 60 FPS...I think...?

I think the 7D is better than the 50D, when it comes to RAW Video resolution. I'm not sure about which one has better low-light performance, but if you lookin at max write speed and max FPS, you should go with 7D...

Hey. Thanks for the fast reply!
I recorded some test footage, in RAW and in H.264, so you can see what I mean.

@dyfid: Yes, clean template. Maybe you're right, but I'm always like learning by doing  ;)  :)

@swinxx: I read somewhere else here in the forum, that I need this bmdfilm to visioncolor profile.
The problem is, when I don't use this bmdfilm to visioncolor lut (means just use M31 LOG LUT), I get a very dark image!
See screenshots...

And you right, I can see a little difference in this bmdfilm4k!  ;)

EDIT: VisionColor Website says, I need a "VisionLOG" Conversion profile and the LOG version of the LUT, when using Magic Lantern. Isn't this the "bmdfilm to visioncolor" lut?
Look at the bottom of this link: http://www.vision-color.com/osiris/
#17
Hello.
I have a problem using the Osiris LUTs by VisionColor.
I used Osiris LUTs many times with standard H.264 videos, mostly the M31 LUT. But since I got my Canon 50D and DaVinci Resolve, I can not work with these LUTs anymore, because they doesn't look good anymore (noisy+too much contrast). I think I do something wrong in my workflow.

So here is my workflow:

-Shooting video on Canon EOS 50D in RAW-Video, not MLV! (using KomputerBay CF 64GB 1050x, resolution:1568x882, 24fps)
-Converting .RAW files via rawcdng 1.5.0.BETA6 (CDNG 16bit, nothing else selected)
-importing folders including .dng files into DaVinci Resolve 11 LITE (on Windows 7 64bit)
-DaVinci Resolve Camera Raw Master Settings: Decode using: Clip / Color space: BMD Film / Gamme: BMD Film
-DaVinci Resolve Settings->Lookup Tables: 3D Input Lookup Table = BMDFilm to VisionLOG-RAW 3D LUT_64
-DaVinci Resolve Settings->Lookup Tables: 3D Output Lookup Table = M31 (LOG)

Even with good lighting setup, my video files get too much noise, plus the video files have too much contrast and saturation. Looks like I would have applied the LUT 3 times over the video or something like that.
I hope somebody can help me, so I can work with my soo much loved VisionColor Osiris LUTs, like back in the days where I was shooting H.264  :)

PS: Magic Lantern RAW videos are 14bit, right? So why does rawcdng just have 12bit or 16bit output?
#18
First of all, thanks to everybody that is helping me here!

@jimmyD30: Most of my productions will only be for YouTube & Vimeo, but right now I'm also producin something for German TV. But I recorded that stuff without Magic Lantern, and had no problemes with it. But for the future, I wanna get my RAW-Videos into the same (or better into a higher level). RAW-Videos are really nice if it comes to shaprness, but the contrast difference right now is a big problem. Expensive monitor stuff is not in my price range right now.

@Levas: I also have the VLC media player on all my computer systems. Does not make a huge difference.

@dyfid: "QT h264 on the mac is encoded incorrectly. On Windows QT h264 is encoded correctly."
Really? WOW! Maybe this is the problem. Would it look correctly on Mac if I would upload the video on youtube/vimeo?

@reddeercity: I don't even have ProRes output in Davinci Resolve (Win)! QuickTime player is installed.

@dyfid: I don't really understand all of that. I will do some google search in the next days to understand what you mean :)

@villasmanzanillo: They got really beatuful smooth shots. Thats it. Maybe you should spend some time on your stabilizer system. Make some tests and look how you can get the best resolutions. And LUTs...I heard (and see) the OSIRIS LUTs by VisionColor are really good. Maybe you should check them out.

To everybody in this forum: Is there any way, or any existing magic lantern version, that can record over 30fps video (RAW or H.264)?
Thanks!

Thanks Audionut and barepixels for your help! But I did some tests and now I think it's a codec problem.
When I export my project as H.264, it all looks good on my PC. But when I export to MPEG4, it get the same contrast problem on my PC!
So I tried playing those files on my different systems and found out the following:

PC:
-.H264: looks perfect
-MPEG4: too much contrast

iPad:
-.H264: looks good (the ipads display has just a little bit more contrast)
-MPEG4: too much contrast

MacBook:
-H.264: too much contrast
-MPEG4: too much contrast

The H.264 and the MPEG4 file looks exactly the same on my MacBook!
So 2 questions:
Why does the files looks different on my other systems, but looks the same on my MacBook??
And Why does MPEG4 and H.264 output looks sooo much different??? I mean it's not just a little bit more contrast, it's the whole video has sooo much more contrast and it has to much saturation. And also I loose all the details because it's too dark!!

Somebody ever had the same problem, or know more about problems like that???

Thanks to everybody who try to help me!  :)

EDIT: H.264 and MPEG4 does NOT look the same on my MacBook. But it does not have the same big difference than on my PC.
I mean when I play back a raw video file that was not edited, it should not have much contrast, right?!
HEEEEEEELP  >:(  :'(

First Raw 50D video. All edited and encoded in davinci 11 beta 2. what do you guys think?

http://youtu.be/Bwou0Pu3bsQ

Looks really sharp and detailed! But I think you should spend some more time on color correction. Also, I would definitly use a stabilizer system for shots like this. You can get them for less than $100 on eBay, Amazon, or asian websites...

What was your workflow?
#22
Hello.
So I received my 50D some days ago and I'm very happy - dope quality!
But..I have a contrast problem with my converted .mov (h.264) files.
I'm editing on a PC using Davinci Resolve Lite, exported to .mov it looks good in VLC and Win MediaPlayer. BUT: when I open the files on my MacBook, the files have sooo much more contrast.

Here is my workflow:
-Recorded on my 50D (RAW, not MLV), using a Komputerbay 64GB 1050x
-use raw2cdng (1.5.0. beta6) settings: CDNG16bit, no other options clicked.
-import files into Davinci Resolve 11 Lite, in Camera Raw changed to:
Decode using: Clip
Color Space: BMD Film
Gamma: BMD Film
-Render Settings: QuickTime, Codec: H.264

Opened the files on some devices:
-Windows PC (where I edit): looks very good!
-Windows Notebook: looks still good!
-MacBook: looks bad, soo much more contrast! (QuickTime Player, VLC - same problem)
-iPad: More contrast then on my WinPC, but less then on MacBook. Looks OK, but still very different compared to PC!

So...somebody can tell me what I do wrong? I edit videos since some years, I know the MacBook display is a little bit different, but not that much different. Maybe it's something with the Codec?

Thanks for any help!!

My 50D was delivered today. I had much fun getting my 64GB 1050x Komputerbay card running (my antivir doesn't let me download EOScard tool) - but OK it's running now.
My first questions:

-I'm in RAW movie mode, 1568x882. sometimes it says:
55.3mbs at 24.001p. Expect around 0 frames at 46.4mb/s
and sometimes it says:
55.3mb/s at 24.001p. continous recording ok.

So why do I get different results every time I do into the menu? And is my card really to slow? I mean it's the 1050x 64GB, that should be fast...

-other question: I think I read somewhere that you can record short raw videos in FULL HD resolution, it just stops after few seconds. But everytime I wanna change to somewhere over 1568x882, it says for example:
1920 is not possible in current video mode (max 1568).
So how can I record short raw video files with a higher resolution?

-And, by the way, what is better for the EOS 50D - RAW or MLV ?

Hope somebody can help me...thanks!  :)

Thanks PhilK! What is the biggest CF card size that I can use for installing ML ?
So before I spend 10 bucks on a cheap card just for installing, I would get another smaller Komputerbay card.
32GB? 64GB?

I also heard the 1050x 64GB Komputerbay card is faster then the 1050x 128GB Komputerbay card, is that true? Because it says the same write speed...

And does the 50D now have a playback module for playing back raw videos?

Thanks for all the help! :)
