Forum and Website / Recently removed threads
March 27, 2014, 09:10:09 PM
Without wanting to cause anyone offense, and understanding that the owners of this site can maintain it as they see fit, I have a question regarding the recently removed threads pertaining to third party builds. One of these in particular contained a conversation regarding the development and testing of a variant build which took place over many months and had been viewed 10's of thousands of times. Given that the bulk of the software being tested and discussed there was identical to magic lantern, there is no doubt that much of the information there was and is relevant to magic lantern. I am wondering if this discussion still exists somewhere or if it is gone now. I feel it has at least historical value and in some cases dealt with issues that still pertain to magic lantern. Would allowing it to remain but locking it so no further comments can be made make sense? Again, no offense intended and many thanks for all that has been provided to us here (free of cost).

In After Effects, set the frame rate of the image sequence to be whatever it should be (what you shot it at) by File / Interpret footage / Main.
AE assumes 30 fps for image sequences unless you tell it otherwise.

I really don't see anything there answering my question

Did you convert the raw to something photoshop can actually open, such as DNGs?

Thanks for the reply! I don't use crop mode, and am not sure what you mean by "canon preview." The output came from MLRawViewer... wonder if the problem is there? I can't actually play back on the camera itself: it plays at perhaps 8 fps. (And to answer the next likely question, using a Lexar 1000 32mb card.) I did read something about a "memory hack" which I am NOT using.

Would you mind sharing a "working" magic.cfg config file either here or by PM?

If you're not shooting crop mode, then my settings probably won't apply to you (also, you are using a different build from me).
Based on my testing, it looks like anything that strains the camera's processor too much could potentially cause the tearing. Try turning off overlays (Global Draw)and see if that helps. I would do some tests to see what works for you in your mode of shooting. If you shoot some short clips of something with vertical lines filling the frame, and pan back and forth, you will see the issue if it's present (I used the back of a rocking chair). You could try different settings and see what causes it to happen.

That was fantastic; thanks for sharing!

It's a "tearing" of the image (circle added to show where the problem is) during motion. Is this a new issue, or am I missing something which will help avoid these?

This happens under certain conditions (when you overload the camera, is my hypothesis). It has only happened to me when I was using the ml grayscale preview in crop mode. When I use the canon preview there is no issue.

Here are some comments reflecting some test results I got (using a tragic lantern build, btw):

Don't use the filter in crop mode. In crop mode there is no line-skipping and so no aliasing which needs to be blurred.

Quote from: bufftheowl on March 21, 2014, 03:39:03 PMObviously I can't just put them into the camera with out ML on them and do formats.

Why can't you put them in the camera and format them? As long as they're not bootable, there should be no problem. If they are bootable, just format them on your computer first.

Vista hasn't been tested, but I would expect it to work OK.

If you run MlRawViewer without giving it a video file, do you see a file selector then? If you can supply an "mlrawviewer.log" file from when you pressed W that might show something.

It's working fine now. I may have been using the wrong version (file association issue). Thanks!

I just tried the magiclantern builds from Mar 5 and Mar 6, as well as the latest nightly build. All 3 had errors and stopped recording RAW. All had a dropped frame and autostopped.

Dropping frames is not an error; that just means you are filming too high a data rate for continuous recording. Also, stopping when there is a dropped frame is not an error; that is a setting that you can change (Don't have my camera right now or I'd tell you exactly where that is).

Using 1.1.3 on a pc.
Hitting "W" key does nothing (I expected to select a directory).

Edit: I guess because I'm on Windows Vista?

You might want to give this a try:

http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=9560.0

It allows you to set in and out points in the raw file to extract from.

One more thing: you will not see the other files listed in Mystic, but it will still convert them.

I'm using MLVMystic (on a pc). It should have converted all the files if named correctly. Make sure you named them correctly when you named them back. They need to be in the correct order or it won't work.

BTW, how do you know the other files didn't convert? Are the DNGs you get just 4 GB worth?

How are you converting them? Usually if you convert the .MLV files the other ones will be converted as well. In case you didn't know, file X.MLV goes with X.M00, X.M01 etc. to make up the complete clip.

What needs to be done to get fps override in 3x mode into ml nightlies? Being as I have no experience with ml coding, is there anything I can do?
#421
The speed of the card is as important as the size. UDMA 7 will be the fastest. You will want a USB 3.0 reader for one of those. Many people here are using the Komputerbay 64GB cards because they are cheap and fairly reliable/effective. They do reportedly have QA issues, so get ready to send one back if it's not up to snuff. There are also more pricey options which reportedly are more reliable.

Cant exfat my 64gb Komputerbay cf card , I can only get Fat 32 , im trying to record more than 4gb , so far when I try to do this I only get a raw file of 4194 gb plus a Roo file ? of so many gb , the weid thing is I can veiw a two minute raw of the card which seems to be larger than 4gb but when I try to convert it to DNG I can only get 399 gb , dont realy understand whats going on here any help, advice or points in the right direction would be welcome.

You didn't say what model camera. Some cameras (7D for instance) format as Fat32 only.
Fat32 only allows max 4GB files. If you shoot a longer clip than that, it will start a new file (.R00, .R01 etc.). The various converters you can find here (look under Raw Video and Raw Video Postprocessing) will all handle the multi-file raw clips with no problem. Personally I am using Mystic at the moment because it's fast and all I need are DNG files.

I am also not finding FPS override in the Raw video submenu after zoomed in.  Have tried with main menu settings of 1080/30 and 1080/24 and no go on either.  Old version on my end or missing something?

Last I checked (been a few weeks), the ml nightly did not have frame override in crop mode. Tragic Lantern nightly does though.

Raw Video / Re: MLV Raw Audio not synching

I have been playing with the import frame rate in AE. the one clip I was working with lined up at 23.67FPS import. However, I did another clip, imported at the same fps and it's off again.

Are you sure the audio is out of sync, or is it just that the audio is longer than the video? Because it is normal for the WAV clip to be longer than the dng sequence. It is still in sync; just line up the beginnings and don't worry about the ends. At least, that's how it is for me.

The audio track is slightly longer than the video track. Am I doing something wrong? I use the same fps settings in davinci as the clip. Thank you in advance

All mine are that way too, yet they are in sync nonetheless.
